Hey All,
I'm thinking about picking up a nice new pair of SCD's (or single). I currently have a pair of Oktava's (one Russian, one Chinese), a pair of SM81's, and access to a pair of KM184's. I generally like to have them in pairs, but maybe a single would be good too paired up with an LDC (which I have plenty of....for now). Main use would be acoustic guitar, but could also find use with drums/percussion.
This Telefunken ELA M260 looks nasty (in a good way), but has a Chinese capsule (from what I can tell) and is expensive. BeesNeez Lulu's interest me because the Frank that I have is a monster. The Miktek's I've heard sound good. Mojave MA-100's are interesting being little tube machines. I don't have any first hand experience with any of these though. Should I be looking at any of these specific ones? Is there something else that I should look at? I'm looking for something that has great sound and quality, but also not break the bank. MXL, Nady, etc. need not apply.
What do you guys think?

Trying to keep the budget under $1000, but could go up to $1200/$1400 for the right pieces. Also, prefer newer stuff to vintage, just to try to avoid worry of failure.

I've had really good results with nickel capsule tube sdcs. The KM54 and the 582. I think gefell still make a transistor one.

AKG 460s are beautiful for realism, AKG 451s for brightness which might work especially well blended with an LDC. The Gefell offerings are CHOICE. But much more expensive than you are interested in spending.

I always wanted the Beyer SDC . You can hear them on the clipalator , www.zenproaudio.com/clipalator.aspxI'd check out sE Electronics Mics too . They are cheap and REALLY good . I have the sE X1's LDC's , only $160 on ebay but they sound really good . |

I'm interested in the Beyer. That seems like the caliber I'm looking for. Anyone used them?
This SEX1 pair was $120? Anyone else try those?
How about the Telefunken?
Can anyone make a case to buy a single SDC over a pair?

I've been using a pair of Josephson C42s for a few years now. They're a pretty bright mic without getting harsh.

Without knowing what you're after I'd hate to recommend them. A lot of stuff I like would possibly be harsh to someone else, give them a whirl though.

Those LULU mics looks suspiciously like OEM chinese mics rebranded. Similar to the MXL603.. Go compare the bodies of them..

If the lulus are the the same pedigree, I can only expect high quality. These Beyer MC930's seem to have a pretty strong rep. I think they're the current frontrunner. |

I have to say that I have been really pleased with Groove Tubes GT-44 on acoustics. They are no longer made but you could get a pair used out there for the money you are looking to spend. They are sort of an in between SDC and LDC in size but it might be worth consideration.

A friend of mine is an audio engineer, and a fine musician. He was asked to record a concert at Lincoln Center of the New York Philharmonic. He has a vintage set of Neumann K84's, on loan from his boss' private collection. He also brought his own clone pair, made by Gauge-USA, a Chinese clone importer whose mics are manufactured to slightly higher standards and specs than other cheap knock-offs. The thing is, he recorded with them both, and he preferred the Gauge's. So did his boss. I'm not saying this will hold up in every situation, but these are some serious cats, and they simply liked what the Gauge ECM 84 classic sounded like over the real thing in this instance. I bought their U87 clone. I've used U87's for decades on a daily basis. I sold them quite a while back. What's unusual, is that when I tried to describe the Gauge's sound to a friend, I realized I was describing the real U87. What's important to me is that even if in a direct shoot-out the original was superior, they got something right, and the mic doesn't feel like a compromise, it just feels honestly useable. After buying the U87, I became a "sponsor", which gives me a little discount, like 10 or 15%. This a great way for some of us to build an all around excellent sounding, huge mic locker, and then you can cherry pick your special mics as you go along.
I believe they have a 30 day return policy, but don't quote me. I'll be getting the 84's in a month or two.

Bump. Still curious about this new Telefunken ELA M260. Anyone used these? Bumping this. Still looking at SDC's. From what I've heard, I've narrowed it to the Telefunken ELA M 260, BeesNeez Lulu's, and the Beyer MC930's. Anyone else with experience with these? Clips of all these sound good, but I don't know anyone that has used more than one. Either way, add your thoughts! |
