mjb, my suspicion is if you get one of the martins(anything accurate/transparent), and use a pair of warms/vp28's/missing links, to get your transformer color, you'll be right in the burl ballpark? To each his own, but i have absolutely no interest in a converter with a transformer built in line??? if i want transformer color, i'll add it in myself. You know that good transformers can be as linear or more linear than discrete or monolithic input buffers when spec'ed and used properly. The main advantage, and mojo part, comes when they are driven hard. This is where op-amps show their weakness, while discrete buffers perform admirably and transformers, albeit different, really take the race. With careful level management the Burl and its' predecessor the 2192 can be very linear devices, it's just that they are much more forgiving when levels start to get unruly. Obviously guys that make proper use of the headroom we have available to us will notice less difference, but who are we kidding. Most of us like to see at least a little red sometimes, right?! Now tell me how those CT12's sound in your Matachungs. ;-)

There seems to be a perception that the Burl A/D is somewhat colored and inaccurate. I think the Burl is as accurate as just about anything out there, with very high quality analog components designed such that any color, especially when driven hard, is more in line with what we perceive in high-end analog equipment. I may be just paraphrasing something I read on the Burl website years ago, but it seems to be in line with what I hear.

“the BDA8 does get fatter/warmer as you push the output level” Rich Williams source: Tape-Op reviewIn my universe, "fatter/warmer" sounds like an intended saturation and therefore another approach of Rich Williams to DA conversion. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that if you use them for mixing. This can be very useful. Just what i said about an approach with saturating transformers at high levels, in this case with a discrete output stage that drives it. Of course there are transformers possible that can pretty much not saturate in the audio band at common studio levels and therefore can be considered very transparent (in the sense of "plain flat"). But as i understand the designer's own comment, this is not exactly the intention. So i think it's not fair to compare converters that aim at different goals. A bit like apples and oranges... Best regards, M.

You know that good transformers can be as linear or more linear than discrete or monolithic input buffers when spec'ed and used properly. Hey 5, not doubting you, i'm not as smart as a lot of guys around here, but I do wonder what Jim williams would have to say about this? I talked to him about popping a few sowter trannies in my modded delta 200 channel strips, he said(paraphrasing), "sure, if you want to add noise and slow it down, if you want color, why not just use a tube mic and outboard api pre, or color compressor or something", couldn't argue do to the fact that i've got the c12 you mentioned, a 47, a bunch of chewy vp28's, 1176's etc. i can track with the vp28, then use it at uninty and stick em in line AGAIN for mix down if i want color, love my Vp's!! I would like to see the spec sheet on the burl, i'd also be curious to see what ratio the tranny's are wound for?? If they are even a smidge hotter than 1:1, that would make me very leery of them, for this reason, 2 identical tracks with one .5 db louder, will be picked blind as the better sounding track, by good ears, virtually every time.
Now tell me how those CT12's sound in your Matachungs. ;-) Tim's capsules took the matachung c12 and my modded up rode k2 to "holy cow" levels, i never thought i'd own mics this nice. I had both of these completely modded and finished with stock capsules, they sounded really very good, Tims ct12's installed was a stunner! I highly recommend them!

Thinking of picking a Ross martin ADC up. Think this will be a pretty big upgrade from my adc in the Mr816?
So you guys reckon these stand up to some of the bigger names?

Also, jim williams said it's really good, and with my pretty extensive experience with him, when he says it's good, it's good. Especially when it comes to speed, low noise, beef and transparent accuracy(which is exactly what i'm personally after in a converter), that's Jim's thing. Not a lot of feedback out there so far, i found this, hope it helps www.gearslutz.com/board/reviews/797341-ross-martin-dual-pcm1794-w-ada4898.htmlgood luck T

Hi lolo, so far, i still not had the time for measurements, but had the chance to listen to the standard 1794 DAC a few times more in the last two weeks, my brother too. We are awaiting a second unit like this with usb and phone amp, as well as the "<purple site> beast" type unit with ADA opamps. I guess that expresses that we like it very much.... If the ADC is anything like the DAC in terms of sound quality, i am sure you will not regret the buy. I never heard the MR816, i just know it is a decent unit, developed by Yamaha for Steinberg after the aquisition of Steinberg. I guess it might be at least at one level of the previous Yamaha converters, that were underrated good converters. There are people at the purple site that compare the ADC to mytek, apogee, lavry, even rating it higher. As for the DAC i can say i would rate it in the same league for sure, and definitely i like it better than the apogees i heard. That said, i think i should tell, that the DAC sounds different to all other DAC i listened to, and the difference is not subtle and i consider it faster, more differentiated throughout the whole audio band. I read at least from one owner of the DAC, that he did not like it and sold it, because he had problems to make translatable mixes and got back to his previous converter, i guess i should mention this. I am completely happy with it and would not part with it in forseeable future.
BR, Martin

Cheers. Yeah the Mr816 converters are good. Love te integration with cubase. Also love the Onboards Rev-x reverb for tracking. Overall its a good unit. Monitoring through a Dangerous music source that is top notch. But i'm thinking of getting a high quality 2 channel ADC. Hardle ever record more than 2 channels at a time. Looked at the Bla sparrow and Burl ADC( my wife will kill me), but yeah $2000. Bought Neumann KH120's last week. Btw they are freaking fantastic. But yeah dont have $2k now.
Also considered to upgrade my interface to maybe apollo/rme. But the yamaha unit is good enough as a interface for now.
But if the Ross martin ADC is up there in Quality with $2k units im def jumping on this boat. Also read that its quite above RME and the likes of the apollo in conversion.

Hi lolo, you do not take a risk if you buy a RM ADC. If you do not like it, they are very easy to sell - lots of people that don't want to wait an unforseeable time for a converter might instantly buy it on the bay or in the site classifieds of the obvious forums, even at the original pricing.

Lolo... I think you'd find the RM4222 to be a great quality. I got mine and immediately lent it out to a close friend who had to send his back for repair. I should be getting it back this week or next.

And as Martin, said, reselling should be easy if u didn't want to keep it. But, I've said it before... the clock alone is worth the price of admission.

Australia is 240v Its really confusing on the Ross Martin site , but after awhile I figured out how to order and what was going on . He has a bunch of "BUY NOW" buttons you click , one for each piece of gear , which will then direct you to Paypal . Mixed in are ones labeled : International Shipping.......... You want to click the "BUY NOW" that says "PCM4222 International Shipping 220VAC" I think thats how it works......but I could be wrong.....

lolo, scumbum is right. This is the way it works on the webpage. 110-240V are mostly switcher supplies. Not so the Ross Martin stuff. It uses external transformer boxes, the units are powered with +-16V, the transformer primaries are 110 for the units without intl. shipping and 220 for the units with intl. shipping. International shipping is ~50$, this way you can easily see if you hit the right button (that is not obvious in some cases :-)).

Ross ought to take the profits from a few 4222's and hire someone to make sense of that mystery maze he calls a website!
