I've been around the boards long enough to notice that some things seem to disappear from discussion faster than of women I've just met.
Example: Waves plugins: - 15 years ago: "can't live without them" - 7 years ago: "Are they really worth the WUP?" - Now: "Any Waves plugins worth buying?"
What other bits of hard/soft gear went from flavor-of-the-day to <crickets>?
I'm thinking there's some summing stuff in the future of this thread

I remember back in 2010 or so, when the Slate VCC was touted far and wide as The Answer. I do know a few guys who still use it from time to time, but man, I haven't pulled it up in years at this point.

Y'all might be too young to remember, but URS plugins. What a joke.

Repeat after me; we as an industry are slaves to fashion and hype. The U47 is our little black dress, the classics seldom fail. In my days as a gear pimp there were always these weird cycles, Drawmer 1969âs were hot for a couple of weeks then they werenât for 8 months, then it would be Tube Tech. Some gear, and now plugins ride a wave then disappear, some does something different that wows at first but over time just doesnât cut it.

Remember the mythical "Juice" plugin? They never did release it.

Y'all might be too young to remember, but URS plugins. What a joke. Still see many of those when I pull up the old iLok manager. For the time, they had a thing, I think. Of course, I sucked back then at knowing what a thing was!

I could see sonarworks being a future victim of this....sorry đŹ Still going strong here! Didnât upgrade to whatever itâs called now, but the original thing I find no less useful than I did when I first got it. But, as always, I could be an outlier there. Iâm gonna be a bit of a contrarian on this topic. I kinda think all these tools are dang well good enough, we just have short attention spans and are bad at identifying why our productions donât sound as good as we want them to. âItâs the Indian, not the arrowââŚâitâs a poor craftsman that blames his toolsâ and whatnot.

Agree 94%. I'm not sure it's attention span though, it's just "bought this and doesn't sound like this" moments. Edit: I can't say I agree 100% and then disagree 6%. So, changed the metrics.

âItâs the Indian, not the arrowââŚâitâs a poor craftsman that blames his toolsâ and whatnot. In audio, as in many endeavors, it's neither the indian or the arrow, it's both.

Waves âLoudness and analog vibe!â âCrappy sound and WUP and branded plugins!â âThey knew what they were doing in the 90s. What happened?â SSL native plugins Overpriced joke to cheap to overpriced joke again Plugin Alliance âBetter than wavesâ âThe sales are stupid but some good stuff dirt cheapâ âWhat the fuck is TMT? These strips are dirty.â âWhy is Dirk begging for money online while also posing with sports cars on social media?â âThey have a few gems In the dirtâ Magix Samplitude and Am|munition sounded great but who the hell runs this business? Distressor The sound of 2000s rock and metal then everyone realized the 90s stuff sounded better Rode mics âGood for the priceâ âNot!â Joe Meek âCheapâ âAssâ Izotope Trash On every edm record for a hot sec. Thank god it was discontinued RC-20 On every crappy rap album over the last couple of years McDSP filterbank People talked for years about how a resonant filter was the second coming of Christ Valhalla Vintage Verb âAmazing. I only use Valhalla. Sean is a godâ âValhalla is the Waves of reverb. Tinny, harsh, muddy.â âYou know what man? Waves Reverbs sound better but the Delay is cool đ â Soothe âGodâ âPlasticâ Gulfoss âCoolâ âWtf? Why so bright? So it took away all the body and just kept the highs?â

That Drawmer 1968/1969 was hyped up to no end by Fletcher and yes it sounds big and cool but it only really has that one sound. The old, still made Drawmer live sound vca compressors do more. The 1978 does a ton but flies under the radar.
