P.S. Any vocal Processing tips antbar, on a 67 Style Tube mic? To get it closer to Pinder's? Thanks! I hate to say, but I'm pretty clueless about any such thing. Back when we were using the Pinder U67, I'd just sorta swan into the studio and the engineer handled the signal chain. (Think it was an old Altec pre, and gasp, an Alesis comp.) My experience with other 67s have also been in studio situations where I show up and sing, not involved with the tech side. My Roswell k67 went through a CL7602 into a dbx160XL. That was a bit too low-endy for my voice, though the final vocal sound I got from it, with a bit of ITB tweaking, was really nice. But yeah - I'm not a tech fellow compared to most anyone on this forum and am afraid I can't offer any good suggestions... sorry!

I caved and just ordered a used WA67 from Guitar Center. I’ll shoot it out with the BU67 and MK67 in my shootout, and either return it (I have 30 days) or if it really impresses me, I’ll keep it. We shall see.

Got a strong vote of confidence... From a strong Producer/AE on the BU67, off a couple of off the cuff recordings. Seems a fit! Chris P.S. Thanks for arranging that Vincent!

Gotta say, I’m a few months in with my BU67 and I’m using it on every session. Have yet to use it on a vocal but it’s on drum overhead and guitar cabs all the time. I think that I might even want another one! Really unique sounding mic in my locker. It’s dark without being veiled or too wooly. And I haven’t even messed with the internal mod switches yet!

Haven’t used the mic, but I’ve heard recordings of the WA67. To my ears, they did a great job…except that the low end is “loose”-sounding, unlike the real deal.

I just don’t have 6-7k to spare at the moment. Also trying to find some less expensive substitutes to have around as well.

Just popping by to again say how much I love this thing on guitar amps! I spent the last few 12+ hour days tracking guitars. I put up 4-5 mics up for each pass. The BU67 was the only one I never dared to swap out. I had plenty of other fancy mics in the lineup. I’m so enamored with how unique and classy this thing sounds I went out and bought a second!

I just re-looked at this Thread's first page. Curious if Ben thinks "this Puppy" is cool-literally-to hang "right side up". Otherwise I hang it upside down. LOL! Chris P.S. I love the stock tube's coloration BTW.

I still want a pair of the BU67’s even though I have 2 67RI, 3 SM69, SD U99 x2, Mojave 300 pair I got cheap on reverb and BN 87’s. The itch for these won’t go away and it’s got me addicted to Brimar tubes. Microphones are a very nice vice. Oh I’ve got pairs of all the Soyuz too which I adore but I don’t have the new ones which I thought would sound great on you Chris. I need a pair. Massive Facepalm but a big F You to the tax man too.

Big Brimar fan here too! Turns out after all, I'm a Heldentenor, but only when it's set in Hyper-Cardioid. * But my doctor already told me to slow down and take it easier. At least I just bought a stationary bike. To run around town with. Beats the gym. They're pretty heavy. Chris *I tried some "T. Rex size" Tom Jones 60's Ballad vocals yesterday. Like "Thunderball". But was just a wee Velociraptor "Snowball" in comparison to Sir Tom!

I love the stock tube's coloration BTW. Hi Chris, Hi guys; Tube mics can generally be hung "Any which way but Loose" (every time I say that, I can't help but singing to my self for the next 24 or so hours!!!!!) When Capsules used PVC, PP and Styroflex, they were single thatching type films and thus warped when the temp rose even just a little but these days with the inherent stability of Mylar films, the heat generated by the tube is minimal and won't hurt the capsule at all. In most cases, it is actually good for the capsule to have some warmth as it encourages the watery stuff to become floaty stuff and leave the general vicinity of the capsule surface. (I hope that was scientific enough as me loves to show of me skills) When we sputter the Diaphragms (there are a few ways but all end the same), the Mylar reaches up to 80 degrees Celsius and remains sound so any heat from a tube will be like chump change.. Hang em how you will! just don't get a chimp or even a chump to hang em otherwise they might not survive the session!!! As for the Brimar's; Man O Man they are special. There is no other tube that I would EVER use for a 67 sound. Them's more 67 than an 86..... and the best part; I own all of them so I won't run out any time soon.

After getting one of Ben's mics BU87 microphones, I am really keen on anything he makes as well. he has captured that 'make your ears pop' late 60s-mid 70s Neumann sound with the mid bump. Quite the feat. nobody else has done it. At least not convincingly. You know what I'm saying here.

Here is the thing with Ben’s mics, no they are not perfect reproductions, you may find something that over time irks you, so you sell the thing. Well that’s when you realize how good that mic was and more importantly how good they are for the $ because everything that doesn’t do what slightly rubbed you wrong right costs more and most don’t get the resolving power Ben gets for at least twice as much and you realize selling it was STUPID! I’m looking at this entire series and thinking if I was doing more recording vs Live I would want them all! Between Texts with Greg about a live rig I was talking to a guy who basically wants to be the poor man’s scorning stage but can’t afford the Classics, Beesneez Classic Series could do it !

Paul, how do the Mojave 300 and SD U99 compare to the U67RI? The U99 is closer and I love the fat mode. It’s a little less gritty than the U67 but more immediate than the Mojave. The Mojave sounds quite plain until you add a ton of top end and then it is reminiscent but not a convincing 67. I prefer the U99. I’m considering putting 67 capsules in the Mojave but I’d probably prefer Ben’s.

I love my BU67. I have owneed it for a good while now. I have an WA67 as well. Although it sounds different than the BU67, it's not a bad mic. It is a bit thicker than the BU67. Nothing a bit of eq can't handle. The WA67 is also a very big mic. Another reason I like the BU67.Tthe smaller size. I am curious about version 2 of the BU67 but thinking I can achieve the different modes with eq. All that being said I have been real curious about his BU47. There isn't many audio clips or comparisons out there on that particular mic. Plenty of clips of the t1 out there but from what I've heard of the BU47 they sound totaly different.
I also would love to get one of his c12 style capsules and put it in a mic parts v251 mic I built. As well as try his k47 style capsule in my cv4. I kind of wonder if his k47 bcapsule would bring the cv4 more in the ballpark of his BU47.

The CV4 was my biggest regret in mic purchasing until I decided to take a chance and replace the capsule. Now, I own two CV4 mics. Ben's K7 is very good and will get you in the U47ish camp. It's my favorite on alto vocals. I believe the electronics portion of the CV4 is very good. It seems to have been based on an Oliver Archut's U47 Alternate schematic. It's near identical. So the mic design is good and uses an EF800 tube. The main weak point is the capsule. Replace that and you have a whole new mic. My opinion is that the capsule accounts for probably 80% or more of the sound of any mic.
