C'mon, UA has the resources to make an original affordable dynamic mic. I wouldn't call ripping off Shure and a small company as smart business. And after all, imo we have enough of these "smart" people in the world already. The resources to design probably, build probably not, now while they may have ripped it off I doubt I’m betting they are at the very least building capsules for UA and that was figured into the equation early on.

Drew @ UA Hi Drew, what happened with these? Marketing said coming in the fall if I remember correctly, we've fallen off at this point. Seriously interested in a UA / Bock 167.. They are coming early next year. Many dealers are taking pre-orders now.

But is there any chance that UA might bring back David's E49 design at some point? I would kill to have an E49 again (only with a better shock-mount this time around if possible!)

David has been busy getting these first 3 mics out into the world. After that? Who knows!!! One thing is for sure, with David and Chris Townsend heading up our mic division, we're all in for some treats!!!

Well...if at whatever meetings you guys have...if a new E49 with a better shock-mount system comes up...I would buy two!!! Maybe three or four if I could afford it. I'm so excited about UA and Bock partnering up. I hope you guys have major success, and as I said. I'm gonna buy a 167 this year. It's on my list.

Cary, not criticizing, just curious. Why would you buy a Bock 67 style mic when you can buy the Neumann reissue?

Cary, not criticizing, just curious. Why would you buy a Bock 67 style mic when you can buy the Neumann reissue? Hey Martin! Well for one the price. But for two. David's mics all have a wider frequency response than the original AGK's/Neumann's which I think makes them sound superior to the originals. They're not clones. More inspired by. If you listen to say anything by the Foo Fighters going back to the early 2000's, Dave Grohl is using Soundelux or Bock ELAM 251s on every vocal, and for drum overheads and room mics. (I think he owns at least six of them). There are people who prefer the originals, or clones for being "more accurate", but that wider frequency response David goes for with his designs just sounds better to me. Especially with a great preamp (Like Useful Arts/Great River/Neve, or a good Neve Clone, etc.). My E49 was THE best mic I have ever used. I miss it all the time. But the reality was it took a bad fall (due to a drummer who knocked it over), and even after it was repaired (which took over a year), it didn't sound the same. The magic was gone. I love my Advanced Audio CM49s, but they don't have that wider response a Bock mic has (though they do have more headroom and sound great on everything). A U67 style mic is my next favorite design for utility (still sounds great on just about everything). So now that the UA167 exists for $3,000...that's a gamble I can make this year as long as I stick with my day job. And I'll probably keep my AA CM49s for things like guitar cabs and drums (they sound fantastic for those applications). I got almost 12 years out of a second hand Soundelux E49 as my number 1 for $2,500USD back in 2006. The only real drawback was the badly designed shock mount (which was a cup design with no latching mechanism , which is why if UA is reading this...for the love of God, redesign the E49 to use a standard shock mount)! The new mics seem to be using better shock mounts at least...big step in the right direction. Lastly the 167 is a new version of the U99 by Soundelux right? That mic was killer, and I preferred it to a vintage U67 at Chalice studios in LA at a shootout we did in 2011. It was my 2nd favorite of the night (right behind my E49). As long as they stick with David's designs, I know what I'm getting is what I mean to say. Also when I shot out a vintage M49 Vs my E49 at Flying Blanket Studios in AZ (where they have the old 80s series Neve that was at Fort Apache now), we picked my E49. If it was just marketed right, and priced similar to this new 167 (in the $3,000-$4,000 range) I think they would have a hit. Love the ELAM too...but it's a bigger investment to own one. I'm not sure I can justify it. My friend Scott Kammerer had an old Soundelux ELAM 251, and it was an incredible mic. That's actually how I got turned onto David's work back in 2004. I'm seriously trusting UA here. I really hope this partnership goes on for years and is super successful. But they should bring a version of the E49 back. That mic was special. You stop lusting for things like a U47 when you try one.

Cary, not criticizing, just curious. Why would you buy a Bock 67 style mic when you can buy the Neumann reissue? My answer will be a bit more succinct as I have a vintage and a re-issue, from what I've heard I like the U99 as much if not more. There's an air of LMF clarity that the U67 doesn't quite have. However the amount of times I've bought a mic and didn't like it once it's in the studio, so who knows?
If the clips translate in my studio I'll sell the vintage U67 and roll around in the spare cash before I inevitibly have to put it into another house so I can offset the crazy cost of living at the moment.

The search for the holy grail mic continues! My benchmark was a vintage U67, nothing's topped it yet. Only the Chandler REDD was in the ballpark. If I could afford it, I'd buy the Chandler today.

How do we think the UA Bock 251 will stand up against the Heiserman 251 I wonder?

It has a relatively darker tonality. Heiserman and Bock both design A-1 mics. Chris

AFAIK they're supposed to sound the same. (Unless something new occurred/haven't seen anything) "Bock" was meant in the context of the designer, rather than the badge. Chris P.S. I try to keep an eye on it, partly as I have the last U195 incarnation.

My holy grail mic is the ISK 2B MK2, it's 251 style and it consistantly beats everything I have. Yes, even my vintage 67 and even the Tele 251 I had.. When it's right, it's right..
Props to the Beyer M88 though, whoever recommended that mic to me (I think it was svart) deserves a medal. It has actually renewed my faith in dynamics and for the price of it oh my wow..

Lemme see. Who else are the big M88 fans? Drumsound, The High Tenor, that guy who trys to be funny. Hmm... Chris P.S. Bob Ohlsson was the original person, way back for me. And for the 441.

Dang Shadow, I looked around and ISK doesn't seem to be making the 2B MK2. It was really that good? Wow. I heard a demo of their Little Gem and nearly bought one because it sounded really good on bass. But I don't track bass through a mic very often.

I keep trying to find something better bless my cotton socks. The little gem is cool but average to be fair (which is good for the price I suppose), the high end of 3U and ISK is scarily impressive..
I literally just ordered a spare ISK 2B from Runway Pro Audio (where I bought the MK2 last year from) on E-bay 5 minutes ago for $425.00.. It's weighty, direct, pleasent, lacks sibilance, takes EQ well and is rather hi-fi. I'm really not sure what else you could ever want from a tube mic.. It's like a 251 and an M269C had an affair with each other..
P.S I'll let you how the Bock 167 competes when I have it..

Definitely me. I have an early 80's silver basket 88. It sounds amazing in a great room when you can give it some serious gain, open it up and stand way back from it - it's a flippin' classic vocal sound. I value every bit as much as my Wunder CM7. Having done recording a world class vocal with it, you can stick it in a kick drum and record a great bass drum sound. How many mics cover all the bases like that!

Can I TRADE your Wunder for a M88TG then? (Oh wait-it's just a TG ) The 'humble AKG P120 sounds very good. Almost exact frequency response to the U99/UA 167. No Brainer for $100 or less. Like an Itty Bitty baby Dinosaur version. The Soundelux/UA is the fully grown up T. Rex! Chris
