As mentioned, mics are very subjective. To me, SM7s have a slightly closed in, sort of muted upper topend. SD-1 does not. Hope this helps. That's the nice thing about the SM7b it's not subjective. It's frequency response is what makes it what it is .... and so darn useful. The SD-1 is a new tool and may indeed be useful in it's own right (I'm sure it is) - but it's not a replacement for a SM7b as it's not an SM7B (obvious really) Hope this helps PS You can put me down for a UA/Bock 251 !! Lovely thing that mic - looks very pretty too - definitely on my demo and wish list. Indeed, it is not a clone.

It's not a clone and doesn't sound the same. IMO, it sounds better, with a more open top. But of course mics are incredibly subjective. Check it out and decide for yourself. It's obviously aimed at a budget conscious segment @ $299. "SM7-b" .... "more open top" Not two thoughts I expect to read in the same sentence. Depends who's singing through it. Always possibility of wardrobe malfunction. Chris

If you've seen his other reviews and know his voice, this video might be a good reference for those interested.

Good to hear from you Drew. I get the need for being positive and diplomatic regarding the new SD-1. But since it's blatantly obvious it's copying the SM-7B, my question is does the SD-1 improve on the sound of the SM-7b or not. If it isn't demonstrably better I can't see any reason to buy it. I can get an SM-7b for $340 any day. I could use an SM-7b sometimes and would be glad to save a little money and buy the SD-1. I like the white color better, but that's not enough to make me get one. It's not a clone and doesn't sound the same. IMO, it sounds better, with a more open top. But of course mics are incredibly subjective. Check it out and decide for yourself. It's obviously aimed at a budget conscious segment @ $299. But Drew everything you mentioned is why the SM7 works in radio and why everyone is using one, it’s really hard to screw up with an SM7! Think of all the podcasters using one with studio monitors, you don’t have to fight feedback with an SM7. It’s also why I sold them like bubblegum.

And now people have another mic to consider (that we think sounds better) that is also $100 cheaper. There is no downside here.

Drew what is the long term service/repair policy, regarding sending in your UA microphone? Also Bock and Soundelux microphones... Including things like an iFET? Thanks, Chris

Does that include Soundelux? They'd all be out of warranty of course and David has shops he has "blessed" to do that work.

So, the SD1 is not a clone of the SM7b after all. It's a clone of a clone of the SM7b.
Same capsule apparently.

Compared to the very high quality (manufacturing) of other UA products, I am surprised they put their name on this rebranded Chinese microphone with dip switches on the back..........there are some minor build differences which are more quality but still.

The goal of the standard series is to fill out the mic line and offer something for everyone regardless of experience or budget.
Sphere is the industry leading mic modeler and then there's UA Bock, all analog, handmade in Santa Cruz by David and his team.
Why make a user go to another manufacturer just because of money? This is just smart business.

C'mon, UA has the resources to make an original affordable dynamic mic.
I wouldn't call ripping off Shure and a small company as smart business.
And after all, imo we have enough of these "smart" people in the world already.

How much money is “original affordable dynamic mic” in CA? $1k?

Well, it’s cheaper than the SM7, so I appreciate that. Competition is good for us consumers.

If I liked it as much or better than the SM7b, then I'd buy one. I'd have to hear for myself first though.

Drew @ UA Hi Drew, what happened with these? Marketing said coming in the fall if I remember correctly, we've fallen off at this point. Seriously interested in a UA / Bock 167..
