I like Zildjian A's and K's but have you considered Paiste Giant Beats, Big Beats or 602's? This^^ I have a giant beat 22” regular ride Giant beat 18” crash And late 70s 14” zildjian new beat hi hats Really does the trick for the vibe I’m usually going for with my club date kit. I have been considering adding a dark k crash though- for some extra versatility.

I have cymbals from a lot of brands, but I’d say Paiste Masters Dark are the most ubiquitous. Old 50 and 60’s Zildjians can be great but you have to go through a lot of them before you find a special one

Does anyone have any experience with the Zildjian K sweet cymbals? What’s your opinion? Haven't heard the full set but I demoed the 15" hi-hats and they sounded wonderful. No harshness at all. Really dug 'em!

Anyone know of any hats that are somewhat low volume, pure tone but not dry sounding? I have maybe 5 sets of hats, Zildjian 13 fusions, Zildjian A custom 14, Sabian HHX 14, Sabian XSR 14, Dream hand hammered 14 and maybe some more.
All of them have different flavors but only the Zildjian A Custom really stand out, but they're super loud.
The fusions have more of a *clop* sound when hit. The sabian HHX are loud and have a strange overtone. The XSR are loud and overly bright but they have a good shimmer. The dream are too dry sounding and have a trashy component to the sound.
I've listened to various K zildjians and the light hats seem to be the most even sounding of them all but they're quite dry in most of the clips and lack some of the shimmer I'm looking for.

I don't know if I'm just dreaming this up but my K Custom Hybrid Reversible (14") have a nice shimmer to them. They're almost "pretty" sounding. If you flip them over they dry up a bit.

14" reversible K Custom Hybrids here too! They sound great. They are supposedly limited edition so they might be tough to find now.

I like Zildjian A's and K's but have you considered Paiste Giant Beats, Big Beats or 602's? Fantastic cymbals. Pair well with ribbons as overheads. Which also brings out the warm mids on drums.

I have a 14” Zildjian crash that I pair up with a SabianAA bottom and it sounds great! You just never know, until you try. I need to order 3 crashes of every brand, record some takes before I will know if they work or not. Trying to find an outfit that will allow demoing of cymbals.

I've been checking out so many videos on hats but even the same model/size can sound drastically different from clip to clip. I wish I could demo a few at a time in the studio to see which ones I like in situ.

Zildjian K Ride, crashes (custom dark) and 14" hats. The K series is the only one that seems to not overtake the kit. Could very well be the drummers I work with but when they bring in their A's or some of their Sabian cymbals, I can never get the drums loud enough without cymbal bleed I don't want. I'd definitely buy the K's again.

I'm a drummer and there are so many makes and models suggested here that it's making my head spin! I'll break it down from perspective: Hats--if you're wanting versatility go with 14", not 13" or 15". Personally I'd buy some used thin 60s A Zildians. School yourself to what weights are considered thin and go from there. Crash-- 17" or 18" to assure versatility. Honestly there are a LOT of bad sounding new crashes out there. For instance I've NEVER played a Custom A that sounded open to me. All the major companies make great high end models, but the Guitar Center middle of the road cymbals can be really hit or miss. Ride--There's a reason why drummers refer to finding a great ride as searching for the holy grail. To cover your bases you may want to buy two, a nice crash ride with a clear bell, and a more musical cymbal with a woody stick attack. I wish the answer was as easy as recommending a make and model, but cymbals are not like buying an AudioScape compressor. You may need to buy and sell a few before you land on something that drummers will want to use. Don't be discouraged--the pursuit of cymbal listening is really eye opening and will help your engineering skills too.

I’ve liked the Zildjian K Dark crashes quite a bit. They record well if you’re not wanting modern/bright/glassy. Good ears. I agree. Ride cymbals are tougher to find a good one. Try the K Sweet Ride

We have some Zildjian A Customs now, master sound 14" hi hats, medium thin crashes 16" and 18", and a 20" ride. We bought them used a few years ago. The crashes record a little bright and the ride is pretty loud compared to the rest of the cymbals. I've used new beat hi hats and liked them, maybe we should go that route?? The A Custom are a "bright & modern" sounding cymbal... very articulate & cutting, that's what they do. Not sure standard A's would go far enough in the right direction. I mix regular A & A custom all the time. New Beats are the most popular hats on the planet, like the tube screamer. Probably better to have a different option? Zildjian K set is a safe bet and buying cymbals as a set isn't a bad way to go. Pricing is better and you know they're all going to have matching tones & harmonics. The Sabian HHX is their "darker" cymbal like a K while the AAX are more like the A Customs. If you want something really different and darker then maybe look at the Meinl Byzance Sands? Dry cymbals, dark overtones & longer sustains vs the "cutting crash" thing. Really considered buying a set a couple years ago but they wouldn't match anything else I had & not sure they'd really work in the genre's of music I usually do. Loved 'em at the drum shop though... if you want different?

+1 on the 14" New Beats. Even though I've moved away from Zildjians, I'll never sell those hats or my A 18" medium thin crash. Classics.
As far as some other things the OP may want to check out, here are a few I like:
Hats: Paiste Signature Dark Energy. I LOVE the 15's Crash/Ride: Paiste Giant Beat 20" Istanbul Mel Lewis series. They all sound wonderful, IMO.

I like 14” new beats and Mastersounds. I got to try some Zildjian K Sweets today, but I swear I liked the K dark customs better. I did like the k sweet ride, it had a nice crash to it as well. I really liked the Sabian Freq hats. They had a pair of 15” K sweets, and they sold the bottom for the 14” k sweets so I didn’t get to hear them. I should’ve tried some other bottoms with that 14” k sweet top. They also had some Sabian AAX medium hats that sounded good as well. It’s really hard to pick, but there is that one pair that got away, the k custom hats used. They just sounded right and someone bought them before I could get back there the very same day, I should of just bought them. Ugh!!!

While various cymbals have been mentioned, are there any recommendations on a great sounding splash cymbal? I have an oriental 11” trash splash by Zildjian the text on the cymbal is printed in red. It came with a 16” China trash. It was an exclusive trash pack that came together. These cymbals sound killer! I absolutely love them! I’m not sure if Zildjian still sells them. Cymbals are tough, they either work in a song or don’t. I find that the Zildjian K dark customs are I think my favorite for crashes. They had two K custom dark crashes that were both 19”, they sounded a lot different and I liked them both. Decisions decisions...17” 18” and 19” crashes...and a 20” or 21” ride you can crash on. That’s what I’m looking for, I’m not really a trashy sounding cymbal guy, I like that dark shimmer with complexity. It’s hard to please these ears. I’m very picky when it comes to cymbals. I’m searching for a new set now, and it will probably take a few stores and 40 hours to decide I like the HHX evolutions I like the K dark custom series I like the A series - especially the 15” crash I’ve had since 94. They don’t make them like that anymore! It’s perfect for a studio accent cymbal with the snare. I like some of the Bosphorus cymbals I have a set of paiste Signatures, they sound great, but I grow tired of them I just have a mix of Sabian HHX, AAX, Paiste’s, and Zildjian’s Custom A’s. A lot of pawn shop cymbals that sounded good when I demoed them. Ashame that pawn shop went out of business. They had a really good collection and I got lucky a few times.

I'm not trying my mastersounds reversed... Why not? I don't know anything about mastersounds. The cymbal has ripples. I feel like putting that on top is going to wind up in having a cracked cymbal.
