Meh. I don't think A Customs and the like even sound as good in the room. Never mind recorded.

I find the earlier A Customs sound better than more recent. The "big" cymbal makers adjusted to the multitude of hi-gain amps. The amps got louder and crunchier and then the cymbals got brighter and harsher to compete. And it was a bit of a cycle that has made a lot of cymbals sound worse...

The 90's-2000's were a low point for Zildjian especially. Too many heavy clangers.

I have a pair of A-Custom hats that I got the first year they came out. I took them to the store and compared years ago, thinking I would find a better sounding hat, but to be honest, I liked them better than any hat in the store. That is why I didn’t get a second pair of hats. They are nice and balanced with some meat in them and they record excellent

I'll blame this thread, and my regular drummer buddies (but not my lack of self-restraint), for the HHX Complex set that'll be here Wednesday.

I bought another K dark custom crash to pair with the bigger one I have. Came across a great deal on Ebay on a used one that's in surprisingly good shape for one that's had the markings worn off. I'm still not sold on the K hats though.

I agree with vintagetubelug , the Istanbul Agop cymbals were eye opening to me . They have a magic I hear in some of the early zildjians . A friend has a Mel lewis 20" that he no longer lets me borrow .

The K Custom Hybrids crashes reminded me of Paiste Signatures when I demoed them. Actually couldn’t believe how similar they were. I liked them, but was disappointed because they were so similar. Does anyone else hear that as well, if you had a chance to compare. Zildjian K custom Hybrid got nothing in common with Paiste Signatures, They were created with The R\D and Akira Jimbo.

Here's a track using the new Avedis line. Hats, ride, and a couple crashes. I thought they sounded dynamite.

I was thinking you had them there for some reason. I might actually like clangy/cloppy . I'm mostly looking for hats that aren't loud or strident.

I'd rather have a smooth sizzle for hats for generic work.

I'm mostly looking for hats that aren't loud or strident. I love thin, early sixties (pre New Beat) A Zildjians. They sit well in the mix--musical without being too loud. And honestly you don't have to be that fussy about matching them, just get 'em in the 700 to 800 gram range.

Drummer here- (and a disclaimer for being an Istanbul Agop artist) I am surprised no one has mentioned Agop cymbals. They are very warm and well suited to recording. I love the traditional series, and the dark/thin crashes (18" are incredible), 14" medium hats and 22" medium ride. These are cymbals that rival the best of the 1960's Zildjian A sound that we love on so many classic recordings. They're hand hammered and made in Turkey using old world techniques. I am sure I have some recordings I could share if you wanted to hear some examples. Hey there , A - does the character of the agop line differ dramatically from cymbal to cymbal ? From experience the new zildjians and pastie are all pretty consistent . The drum exchange in Chicago has a few Agops but not the full line .

Yeah they're more handmade especially compared to most Paistes so a fair amount of variation. If you find one you like based on a video or soundfile, buy it! That said, their quality control is pretty high say compared to zildjian and I don't hear a lot of dogs. They make make some duds but they don't get sold and make the cut. The cymbals you're talking about are gonna be great btw. I have a friend who swears by the 15" light hats and he does a lot of records with those.

I went and hit'em, cymbals that is, lol! I came home with 2 cymbals and one is going back! I dig the K Sweet series after hitting them. I'm still trying to find a match on my Sabian AAX Xplosion 16" crash. This cymbal does not sound like anything I've heard even close to a Explosion line cymbal, but I love what it does. It's old, I bought it when they first hit the market, but it has that something, something cool that I can't even explain. Trying to find a match for it for my live rock band setup is taking some time. I thought I would go out and just get another bigger cymbal in the same lineup, boy was I wrong, not even close! Is it me or has the Sabian Xplosion line evolved into something else since they first came out? I get warmth dark shimmer from my old Xplosion. The new ones sound different, don't even feel the same when you lay into them.

I'm really liking the K-Dark set! My studio partner also got a pair of Meinl Byzance dark crashes, 18" and 20", that I'm looking forward to using. Still looking for a hi hat set or two for some options... I'm still leaning towards new beats I think.
