I'm really liking the K-Dark set! My studio partner also got a pair of Meinl Byzance dark crashes, 18" and 20", that I'm looking forward to using. Still looking for a hi hat set or two for some options... I'm still leaning towards new beats I think. I am completely sold on the "Meinl Byzance" series. The more I test them, the thinner my wallet becomes. Interesting that you mention hihat. I took two crash cymbals (16 "Byzance extra dry thin crash) the other day to hihat and they sounded like a dream. Might be worth trying. Here is a link to a video where I have them: Byzance 16" HH VideoThey have that warm vintage sound with the Byzance series and easy to blend in when mixing ..... strange, it always makes me think of Beyonce when I talk about the cymbal series, do not understand why

Is the audio working for other people? I always love to hear Håkan's drum sounds.

Has the website "under Construction" and a new one is on the way. Test if it works now (have reloaded it). Should it not work anyway, you have a direct link here: Byance 16" HH Video Direct Link
Hope it works now

I played some Byzance cymbals the other day, still trying them out. I’m not sure what series they were, yellow markings, but that was it(weird), very, very soft like hot butter, loved the feel. They were ultra dry sounding, the crash was a little too washy/trashy for my tastes. I don’t know what series they were. They only had a few...but I’m still going to try out some more Byzance because I think they are great cymbals I just have to find the model in their lineup that I like to hear.

Agree with you 110% Guitfiddler. They are very washy / trashy and do not work in all styles. I never use them when I have to track heavier, more modern rock / skate punk. Then almost everyone in the "Byzance" series sounds like Chinese cymbals. Such a genre I think the Sabian HHX series delivers better (at least for me). The most fun if you have the opportunity and time is to go into a second hand music store and find some more unique cymbals. Do not worry about the cymbal mark, just bring a drumstick and test around. I have a stock of cymbals that are both broken and old. The old buggers get to work quite often depending on the genre. Cymbals are a little jungle to find the right ones that fit. Happy hunting Guitfiddler

Thanks! Yeah, I’m out again today bashing around at this cool little store that has some rare finds...I’m not going home empty handed! Yeeee ... I can both see&hear you for cymbal battle!! The only loss in this battle is when the store owner had enough of bashing and slamming. May the force be with you Guitfiddler I feel sorry for the salesman and the owner of the store, but they were good sports even when I walked over to the Hi-Hats on display! LOL! I'm too picky! I set out to accomplish 2 things, get 2 cymbals that work with my other crashes, and have 2 pairs that work for live and studio. I bought 2 cymbals and didn't want to even look at the cymbal brand or type, just grabbed them and started hitting them on two different stands setup in the middle of the room. I was surprised when I came to the only two that were talking to me. I set out to get the Dark K series, I was actually talking myself into getting these prior to leaving the house. Then after hitting for about an hour at 4 different stores...lol. I came to the conclusion of not liking the K Darks as much, and they just had no life, it's like they were dead and I think the demos weren't very good, and that I needed to have them go in the back and get some different K darks off the shelf to try. Decided to not put the salesman through pulling his whole inventory because I was on my way to other stores...LOL! I took a break and went back the next day, and to two different stores. I then hit them all again, and the same 2 cymbals spoke to me again...I was still not sold even though my ears were telling me what I liked. So, I bought them and took them to the rehearsal space and jammed with the band for a good 4 hours. I got great feedback from the group, they really liked the way the cymbals sounded in the room. I was digging them too! Now that they passed the live rehearsal test and band acceptance test, I have to put them under microphones with the other crashes and listen to them in the context of a couple mixes. I also found a ride that I think will work, a Sabian 22" Omni. This thing is first an amazing ride, and secondly, I can get three different pings out of this thing depends on where I hit it. Thirdly, and very nerdly, It has an amazing crash and when I crash it, it doesn't even sound like a ride! It sounds like a crash and it doesn't sustain very long, but really perfect, and I never heard anything like it. It's a rare find. This is the first time I had heard a ride that is this versatile. This thing can crash as good as the crashes, but it's a different flavor than my warm shimmery stuff. It is a little more sizzley in a good way, not annoying, but softer sizzle. A 22" ride to sound like this? Seriously could fool the most critical and discerning of ears. I think Sabian is on to something here. I haven't got the chance to try the Omni Ride in the context of the live environment, in fact, I'm worried it might be too quiet!!!! Imagine that? LOL! Too Quiet! We don't play too loud, but I try and keep myself contained and not rock out too hard! I love to hittem hard, but I keep myself reserved until the last set, then I test the room and the guys, see what I can get away with! LOL! BTW...And I didn't try to notice what brands or types, had the sales guy just put them on a stand and one or two hits, and then when I hear something I like or is interesting, I hit it 3, 4, maybe 5 times! LOL! The two cymbals I surprisingly chose are, drum roll.................LOL! There wasn't enough Byzance to test, only but about 5 crashes and 3 rides, and they all just didn't work for what I was looking for, and maybe one day in the future I will give these another look, but I need to see more of their lineup. Zildjian 18" K Sweet Crash(Spoke to me like the perfect crash that I haven't found yet, it just sounds right in all the right ways, it's dances around so beautifully when it shimmers, it's like it's alive, and I love it!) Sabian 19" Fast Crash(This thing does not sound like a fast crash and it is really dark and shimmery, with just the right amount of sustain, longer than a fast crash, but not a fast crash, but if I hit it harder it will sustain a tad bit longer, thinking more like medium long sustain) I want one that matches this one, couldn't find it!!!!!!!!!! I didn't like the Sabian 18" anything, including HHX(I wanted to like the HHX) I absolutely hated the 16" in anything!!! I found one AAX 18" crash that almost worked, but it was just a little flat sounding, most of these are either to harsh or bright for my ears! I own an AAX 16" Xplosion crash that sounds just right to my ears, it is old(bought it when they first came out and took the 18" Xplosion back because I hated it under microphones and in the room. The 16" Xplosion has that dark shimmery thing, but depending on how hard I hit it, I can get what I like out of it. This 16" Xplosion was the cymbal that needed a mate. I'm looking at the K Sweet line-up right now, more testing....I really hope I like the rest of the K-Sweet line-up. I liked the ride at one store but didn't like the same one at another store, they were really different. All the K Darks where disappointing and I know these were just crap duds out on the display that they will never sell! Bummed me out! A drummer buddy of mine has a 17" K dark crash that I love, but I have not come across one that sounds really good like that, and he won't sell it to me!!!!! Arrrrgh!!!!

Always fun to test without caring about the brand, that's when you find those gold nuggets, a bit like pan for gold. Be curious about your "Sabian 22" Omni ". I have not tested it. Your drummer buddy with his 17" K dark crash has just not received the right price from you yet…………

Your drummer buddy with his 17" K dark crash has just not received the right price from you yet………… Thanks drumrec, I just have to laugh at myself sometimes because I’m so darn picky that I would rather spend all week hitting cymbals than to accidentally purchase another cymbal that sits and collects dust because I didn’t really care for it. You definitely have to try the Sabian 22” Omni drumrec, it’s definitely something you have to experience. Would be interesting to hear what you think. That was so much fun doing the comparisons, I should of done a you tube video and documented it. I haven’t even thought of cymbals since my last pair I bought back in the early 2000’s, I went electronic Roland Kit and Superior Drummer 2, then got the itch to record real drums again and sold the Edrum kit. Once I get either the K dark crash of choice/K series crash/ K sweet set, I’ll be good for another decade at least. 👍🏻 I give the Sabian brilliant and Zildjian A Customs brilliant finishes a 👍🏻. I Wish they sounded as good as they look! Now I’m focusing on another K/K dark crash. I’m almost sold on the K Sweets entirely! 15” hi-hats/17” Crash/19”Crash/21” ride I demoed 4 different K Sweet rides. I liked one and another one was a maybe. The third one was a for sure no. I like the 21” and the 22”, the 23” was a little strange sounding to me. It didn’t give me a versatile sound at this circumference. It had a very loud crash with a lot of sustain and the ping wasn’t something you would expect from a 23” ride, but this is going to take more time to focus on this ride thing, maybe it’s in a different line like the K darks, or even K custom, or Super K Custom? I made that last one up, because there are so many K series lineups, why not come out with a new series of K series, what do you say Zildjian? The super K ultra dark & dry series? The super special ultra K series? Extra dirty, extra dry? Is that shaken or stirred? Can you even fit that logo on the cymbal? Maybe even go a little farther and put a slender martini glass on the cymbal? Lol

Well, I just gave up after demoing so many cymbals, and bought a K Sweet Cymbal pack. I'm so against buying in packs, however the store(Great Store btw-Small business Mom and Pop store with a great selection) had the K Sweet Pack and a lot of duplicates in the same sizes. I asked if I could take them out of the pack and compare to the singles. They allowed me to open the brand new pack of K Sweets and compare. I was shocked that they were so close that it was hard to recognize the differences. There were very slight differences, but it wasn't night and day. You really had to listen, splitting hairs really. Sometimes you just have to go in there with no names, thoughts in your head, and just listen. I really liked the 18"crash 19" crash & the 21" ride. The 17" crash isn't bad, but it was the weak one of the bunch, so I found an A custom 17" that really sounded good to my ears and got it to match my other A series collection. Damn, it feels good to nip that thing in the bud, every time I sat down in front of my kit I would get this feeling inside, If I have to play these damn Paiste Signatures much longer I'm going to quit playing!!!! They work great for Metal and some Rock, but anything else and I just can't. My ears grow tired. On to the next quest!!!! LOL!

I still have my trusty New Beats from what year was that again...scared to say! Using the 15" K sweet hi hats at rehearsal tonight, I like them, lets see how they sound in context. Nice, used stands are the way to go! I have several used stands, in fact I think they are all used except for 1...lol! I tried to buy a matching stand for my Yamaha kit and Yamaha changed their sizes on their stands and I can't configure my kit like I want, long story, but I ended up getting two used cymbal stand basses for $50 instead of giving Yamaha $200 to do the same thing for! Not sure why they made that change, I doubt it was to improve the stands(Maybe), it was probably a cost factor, but who knows? I like my kits to have symmetry and I couldn't configure it with my other yamaha stand.

I'm still settling in on the 17" K Sweet Crash. I haven't mic'd them up yet. It might be just what I was looking for in the mix! Hard to judge a cymbal just by hearing it by itself out of context. I thought if it had just a bit more sustain on that 17"...but I haven't had a chance to even use it yet, just setting it up and playing for about 10-15 minutes without the band. I let you know if I decide to change it out and sell, but I don't think I will for now.
