That is impressive then, the UAD Mkii stuff.
A few years back I was in UAD land, back when I was PC and had UAD1 cards.
That stuff is certainly an improvement over what I remember, not that the original was bad.
Plug ins a coming along nicely. The new IK73 is great, best ITB EQ I have used.
cheers

Yeah, I think that's my biggest worry. That now that I've bought the Sta, they'll drop a plug in a few months that nails the Sta sound.

I've yet to hear a plug get all of the qualities of the hardware. UAD does get so close sometimes that the convenience outweighs the desire for hardware. Their EMT 140 is a good example, i really don't have room in my closet for a 14' plate ! The improvement between their original emulations of the LA2 and 1176 and the new versions are night and day. Hell, I'm not even sure I'd want an LA2, the plug works so nicely, I print with it. But, a Sta Level, that thing's the deal, and I absolutely would want every last drop of tone the hardware can bring.
There was a thread about a Sta Level plug a few weeks back, any word on the status of that?

Downloads are now enabled. Really curious as to what you think of these compared to the Sta files...Big difference? Little difference? No difference? Acoustic https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/147496911%3Fsecret_token%3Ds-GHKp4
Vocal https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/147495331%3Fsecret_token%3Ds-u7UU2
So these are uad 1176/la2a, not the Groove Tubes comp?

I wish UA would sign a Retro deal...Not sure Phil is interested in plugs... I can definitely understand that. I imagine a plug that gets insanely close would impact hardware sales, no? I have no shame in mixing ITB. If it sounds good, it sounds good.

So these are uad 1176/la2a, not the Groove Tubes comp? Correct. These are the MKII versions. The 1176 was the rev. A and the LA2A was the Grey model.

I have had a preliminary discussion with someone about a group buy on the Sta-Level...absolutely don't know for sure whether it could happen...but would anyone be interested? I mean, I can't swing it...but if there were like 5 people, maybe there could be an incentive...

I could be interested. Gotta get my Phoenix sold, but when that goes, I'm in the market for a Sta.

just out of curiosity... how do I replace 6bj6 tubes with 6386? Do I just put 6386 into the socket on the back or do I need to take out 6bj6 tubes first before putting in 6386? Wish Retro had a manual for their products.. Jeez

Group buy sounds great, unfortunately it might have to wait til next year for me. I need some other things first, mainly a new computer.

Do this with the power off, of course.

I have to add, leave the power off for a good while before hand, capacitors store power, and tube circuits have lethal voltages of the more dangerous DC variety, be very careful, and if you're not sure, err on the side of caution!

Thank you matt and tony I will make my first attempt sometime this week and report back. Hope I don't blow anything up in the process (including myself)..

You can do either. If you run them simultaneously, it's a little wolfier/hairier sounding. I liked it with just the 6386...Just open the hood and pull out the 6BJ6's...

Well damn...that woulda been good to know before now yeah you wouldn't think so, but my 47 PSU runs 396volts DC without the mic plugged in!!!!, as compared to a 110 ac wall outlet, that's pretty much a bad scene. It's not exactly this simple, but or those who may wonder why DC(direct current) is more dangerous than AC(alternating current), it's because when you get hit by AC, it's a positive/negative charge cycle, causing your muscles to contract for positive portion of the cycle, and and let go for the negative portion of the cycle. DC on the other hand, contracts your muscles, and thats it, so you CAN'T let go. if this is scaring you, that's a good thing.
