I don't currently have an outboard compressor (I'm a heavy UAD user), and have been thinking about buying one for tracking. I was originally going to purchase a Hairball Audio 1176 Bluestripe kit, but now I'm really jonesing for a Sta-Level. That's about a $2,000 difference!!
Someone talk me down from this ledge before I do something crazy...

Uh...you're on the wrong board to get talked out of that it really might be the best piece in my chain. I've tried to live without it several times, but ultimately couldn't. I say sell something and go for it.

I've never used a sta-level. I have 5x 1176. You should too.

Your right in the middle of a Sta Level love fest on this board. Easily the best piece of gear I've ever put my hand to.
BTW, JK, that dude selling that comp on Ebay must be very consistent in his tracking to have that tape on there to mark one spot on the input and output. I move mine around all the time. Hmm..

Whatever happened to the plug that was supposed to be around the corner a month or two ago? Is it out? Is it anything remotely close to the hardware?
Cheers, Geoff
PS - I want a Sta too. The one in my avatar is actually JK's. he wouldn't let me have it for joining the board. The toaster though, I assume is in the mail.

I will have a go. Wait for a plug-in. UAD are probably working on one right now or Slate etc, Plugins are getting so close hardware is becoming quaint Just wait a few months.

Has anyone used the Retro Powerstrip? I've heard people race about it. I think the compressor is a little bit of a one trick thing though. And not the same as a sta. I've owned the 176 and it's stunning too. Not as euphoric as the sta, but more versatile.

Man! You guys aren't making this easy. I want to track with this. I'm a total UAD fan, but do you really think a plug can compare to this hardware for tracking? Of course, if it gets me 99% there and saves me $2300, I'm all in. But I just don't know.
I've been watching that eBay listing, but for the price this listing started at, I might as well drop a few hundred more and go new with a warranty!

donr I seldom use it for tracking opting for my 1176's instead. Use the Sta at mix time. But, it is an excellent tracking comp. A word of caution by personal experience is that if your not used to the Sta, it can get you in trouble tracking with it. You just can't hear the damn thing working. It's easy to pull just a touch too much dynamic with it and not even realize it until playback. That said, it's impossible to make sound bad though. Hitting it lightly during tracking is best, even though you can slam it and hardly know it. About the software plugins that emulate the MU comps, some sound good. UAD has some fine compressors and I use them all but nothing, and I mean nothing can come close to this Retro. It's worth every penny. There's 3 pieces of gear in my studio that I can't do without, my console, my B-2 Bomber and this comp. Everything else is negotiable.
