Happy enough with the JBL 705P's here. I’ve been a bit concerned with a lot of reports of failure with these. DSP scares me, sounds like when the goes down it’s the end of the road for speakers

For sale I have a Tapco 4400 stereo spring reverb. This unit has been refurbished with a full recap of the electrolytics, and the original plastic slide potentiometers have been replaced with C&K which is a huge improvement. The originals were plastic and are a common source of issue with these units. It now works perfectly and sound awesome, but I have two which is totally unnecessary 😂
$450. Would trade for a Standard Audio Level-Or MK II or Anniversary Edition, Standard Audio Stretch, Sennheiser MD441, ADR Scamp Modules, Aphex II Studio Aural Exciter, or towards a Distressor. Might consider other stuff, just ask. Located in Nashville

I work a lot with Carl Saff at Saff Mastering. Incredibly reasonable and flexible...I’ve regularly sent him mix revisions after getting the first round of masters back and he’s never charged me for revisions.
Also, Richard Dodd. He’s surprisingly reasonable as well considering his discography.

Anyone know of any hats that are somewhat low volume, pure tone but not dry sounding? I have maybe 5 sets of hats, Zildjian 13 fusions, Zildjian A custom 14, Sabian HHX 14, Sabian XSR 14, Dream hand hammered 14 and maybe some more. All of them have different flavors but only the Zildjian A Custom really stand out, but they're super loud. The fusions have more of a *clop* sound when hit. The sabian HHX are loud and have a strange overtone. The XSR are loud and overly bright but they have a good shimmer. The dream are too dry sounding and have a trashy component to the sound. I've listened to various K zildjians and the light hats seem to be the most even sounding of them all but they're quite dry in most of the clips and lack some of the shimmer I'm looking for. I would try the Paiste Signature Traditionals Medium Light Hi Hats.

I have cymbals from a lot of brands, but I’d say Paiste Masters Dark are the most ubiquitous. Old 50 and 60’s Zildjians can be great but you have to go through a lot of them before you find a special one

A studio I work out of installed a custom Goldpoint pot in the API 7800 and it definitely made a difference, especially at low volumes. The L/R balance often gets out of wack when you turn things down on most interfaces/monitor controllers. I don’t have any experience with the Dangerous gear so I can speak to that unit in particular
But, I think you’re likely going to hear more of a difference trying different amps. It’s a long rabbit hole for sure.
You might consider getting another 3B/Lexicon and running them as mono blocks? Then you’d also have a spare if one went down.

I bought a Tapco 4400 spring reverb. Already have one, but couldn’t pass up a deal. This one has a bad op amp but I guess they started making RC4136 op amps again. Also replacing all the old plastic slide pots

I think I’ve narrowed it down to the KRK V4 and Genelec 8030C. Or I may cough up the dough for PMC Result6. But, they are pretty huge. Surprisingly few options in the active world that don’t have DSP. I've got a pair of V4 series 1 that I'll trade you for a 60s blue/silver club date floor tom. 😂😂 That’s going to be hard one to track down! I think I’m either going to end up getting something small because they are quiet and portable, or something like the PMC’s so I don’t feel like I need to upgrade later. I might re-arrange my room a bit and try to get the ATCs feeling better but I think I might park those at a studio where I’ve been doing my tracking lately

I think I can go a little bigger than the 8010, maybe I’ll try the 8020 and 8030 and see how the feel in the room

It’s pretty easy to A/B the bigger brands here in the states, but something like Geithain you have to buy and have imported. Those look really interesting but they’d have to be a screamin’ deal to take a chance on them.
I just never really connected with the Neumann’s. Had a set for awhile. Like the little 5” Yamaha’s more, which I’ve considered, but I’d like something a step up from that. It’s a small home mixing space so not really looking to impress clients.
Also, I’ve just read so many horror stories of people with powered speakers with onboard DSP I’d like to stay away from that, which make something like the Quested appealing.

I should say I’m not looking for an Auratone type small check you mix type monitors. Something like the JBL 705P possibly? Never really loved the Neumann KH120A.
The Quested are interesting, maybe PMC Result6? Avoiding DSP seems to be the way to go based on all I’ve read about the JBLs and PMC going down

At home I rarely can turn anything up above conversation level and find myself working on headphone more than I’d like to. I have a pair of ATC SCM12 but honestly they need to be turned up louder than I can listen without annoying my wife upstairs.
What are some good smaller powered monitors for low level listening? Powered is a plus because I’ve had to do quiet a bit of mobile recording so having something I can throw up easily in someone’s living room is a plus (not convenient with the ATCs and a Bryston amp)
Staying around or under $2000 new or used is a plus.

Barfed out $275 in synthesizer parts. But feeling optimistic since the Prophet 5 turned on! I also ordered a few things for an Opus 3 that has a broken slide pot and switch.

A Prophet 5, Otari 5050 1/2 8 tracks, and two Scully 280B mono tape machines that have all been sitting in a storage shed for 20+ years

Starting a new “band” with some friends and picked up an Orange Rocker 30 combo...slightly older one back when they were made in England. I needed something a little more high gain. I forgot how heavy (weight wise) their stuff is.

I think the only thing I really regret selling is an Epiphone Cortez I had in high school. Just recently I got one again, but it would be nice to have that old one just because.
The only thing I ever sold that I know I’ll never replace is a bluestripe 1176. I sold it and it payed for my entire wedding 😆

In these cases I tell people this is what it’ll cost to get it fixed and they’ll usually refund that amount. Coughing up $100 for shipping is better than a full refund...especially since the sellers probably already spent that money 😂

It’s been awhile since I had a Martech and a GML side by side but the GML is crystal clear and pretty fast so I find it works great on something where you need to capture a lot of detail (mandolin, bluegrass guitar) where the Martech is a little smoother and is nice for vocals. But I would use them interchangely

You can download CD quality WAV files from Bandcamp. That’s where I buy digital music...or go to your favorite used CD or book store and pick up a copy of the record you want as a reference and burn a copy to your computer. Used CD prices are really low, usually only a buck or two as long as it’s not a brand new release

Traded some stuff for a 8x14 Ludwig Copper Phonic. It’s pretty ridiculous.
Also going to trade a buddy for a Scamp Rack with some modules.
If anyone has S01 Compressor, S04 Equalizer, S23 Panner, S24 ADT, or maybe even a F300 expander/gate I might be interested.
