I’m mentioned this before - but the Apogee Element series is incredible. Zero latency and same quality conversion as symphony mk1.

I would have never guessed you weren’t 100% from listening. Amazing sounding mic and playing. Better than most I hear around here! Hope your health improves and you keep having fun with the new mic.
Also I love that tune. Great choice.

In my experience having played/recorded a bunch and luckily enough to own a few - when it comes to wurlitzer/rhodes - theres a reason why they have skyrocketed in value. Really nothing beats the real thing.
so much more expressive and "happening" than VSTs. Inspiring to play and capture.
but VSTs easily beat the Nords.

Although Nords are great for live, I’ve never been happy recording them in the studio.

Vtg and well maintained La2a is my fav vox tracking compressor that just makes everything sound better but BE CAREFUL going in - so easy to look over and realize your hitting 15-20db compression if not paying attention. I like to barely hit 3-4 on loudest passes.

I personally love getting Garageband files because the entire session can open in Logic. Probably only the most recent version! ahahahahaha. Seriously, will an old version of Logic open a new version of Garageband? Which I don't have or plan to learn......I want raw files with no processing. I'm probably just dreaming and moaning. I've never had an issue and I'm still on High Sierra. Sometimes just the "warning this was created on a newer version" pops up but everything still opens fine. Maybe I just haven't run into someone running a brand new Big Sur mac?

I would recommend saving up and upgrading monitors first before sonar works.
I demod Sonarworks and it wasn’t happening for me. I mostly work on NS10s and Auratones anyways, but it really made the dynaudios sound weird to me. 2cents.

I hadn’t heard of Sonic silk…or whatever it was called. I was kind’ve hoping it would be an album of that Temptations vibe. But I guess it was kind’ve a lark after seeing the Little Richard thing later. Which was fantastic too. The Little Richard thing was just a tribute - the album isn’t out yet just that one single. I think it comes out this week and is probably going to be more of the 70s meets modern RnB vibe I’m guessing.

Bruno/Anderson blew everyone else out of the water. Such a huge fan of those two.

Have a BB and an Acrolite. Used to have a 60s Supra but sold it last year.
The Acrolite gets used on about 98% of sessions.
I think the Supra would be a much more workhorse/everyday snare than the BB.

Any recommended XL305 sound examples out there available to get a feel for the general sound of the unit? The few I examples managed to find on YT were pretty rough. Did you see my post above?

If it's a reissue of a MicMix unit, that'd be incredible! I thought the guy behind that company had passed? I actually have an XL305, bought it right before Covid hit, but admit I haven't used it yet... ::grins:: We're working with the lead engineer on the project - We know there is a TON of love for the original units out there - but they're noisy, the reverb itself great but admittedly, according to the designer could be made even BETTER but at the time they were obviously limited to the parts being made at the time. The entire circuit has been overhauled in many, many, many small ways - simply employing methods to DRASTICALLY lower the noise floor, make the EQ better sounding a more useable PLUS the overall Equal-Temperament spring sled system has been tweaked and tweaked over the years by the designer to be as PLATE/CHAMBER like as possible. It's simply STUNNING sounding. We have an original unit here which in the early stages, we would constantly reference against - and even from the first prototype unit, it was clear that our new REISSUE was just more lush, richer, had more depth and was overall more useable. In particular, the tail of the verb decays in a way which sounds absolutely gorgeous - very plate like. Suffice all of that to say - this REISSUE circuit / design is the result of over a decade of work from the original designer - digging in deep and making an awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping unit. This is basically his last HOORAY and we were the right folks for the job ;-) Thanks so much y'all!! Can't wait to get some teaser samples for you!!! You had me at more lush. Count me in!!

Since this is a gear site I just gotta say I LOVE how the cymbals go “GWOOOOOOOSSSSHHHH” from the compressor when Ringo hits a crash A lot of that is the cymbal design of the time. Thicker brass at the edges, raw finish and heavy machining grooves. Modern cymbals are designed with a very different profile. The older cymbals don't sound all that great with modern recording equipment and you need that band-limited slowness in old tube gear to get the swooosh or else you get the bonk sound. Respectfully disagree. 50s-60s Zildjian cymbals sound incredible with the “modern” recording equipment I use. I’m not a fan of most modern cymbals I’ve heard.

My favorite software HPFs are Britson and Satson from Sonimus, by far. Both incredibly musical and lightning fast. The 12dB/oct switch on Satson gives you a lot of flexibility. Another really cool one is Mellowmuse EQ1A. It goes from 0 to 100 a little too quick, but you can do a lot of cool things with it. Plus it's free. Britson filters are incredible.

Our XL305 gets used on every session. Really incredible sounding unit, although I think it sounds more like a chamber than a plate. Cool! What sources do you like to use your XL305 on? Love it on percussion. Here is a sample of a little stomp/clap part from a session this week. Unprocessed.
Also used it as the only reverb send for an early RVG Blue Note sounding album with a jazz trio and it worked great for that.

These sound radically different. I'm sure its the EQ. But "B" sounds much more like a polished recording with its extended lows and scooped mid.

Another vote for the mc77 and Lindell 80. I use the 80 bus on my 2bus all the time.
Also the Townhouse is my fav ssl comp plugin.

I'm pretty confident that video has the hardware 1-2 dB louder than everything else, or they're hitting the hardware harder. I've done a side by side comparison with the hardware and SSL native before, and the difference isn't that big. When I sold my GSSL compressor I compared it to the Waves SSL and the Glue. IMO the Glue killed the Hardware when used with over sampling.... Did you have a turbo board on your gssl?

Here's a SSL Buss comp shootout that starts with the hardware around the video 3:45 mark and a slew of different plugin versions to compare following it. the SSL buss comp plugin is around the 5 minute mark. Well the hardware clearly wins here. The Townhouse is the closest to the hardware to me. But it is doing that widening thing that it does - I wish you could have the option to turn that off because sometimes its too much. Still its my favorite ssl bus plugin. The bass is really where the difference is in the plugins compared to the hw.

Cool! The 4K preamp I made with a Carnhill input was awesome - probably one of my biggest gear regrets was selling it a few years ago. well no clue if these will have Carnhills in them. But you could add a Colour module for some more mojo pretty easily! They definitely won’t unless modded but I’m sure they will sound great regardless. I think I saw that they were using Jensen. I would definitely go for the transformer input option. Almost makes me want to get back into 500 series.
