Cool! The 4K preamp I made with a Carnhill input was awesome - probably one of my biggest gear regrets was selling it a few years ago.

I guess I never understood the controller thing. I just moved the mixer out of the studio because I found working ITB to be faster and easier. Moving a trackball and using keyboard shortcuts is a lot faster than reaching for faders and pushing menu buttons 20 times to flip through all your settings.. I love my trackpad which works cool under logic X I’m a track pad dude myself, but I do use a Faderport when I want to write in automation moves that feel more natural. It’s actually really convenient and a time saver for that. Which you can get for under $100 used - SSL is entering a market that presonus, “B”, softube and others are already established in. Curious to see how this goes.

I’m pretty confused by this one.
I think everyone is expecting a control surface every time they have a “big announcement!”
When are they gonna get around to it?!

The market for this seems like 12-17 year olds of mid-to-upper class families.

In my experience RTM is far superior to ATR. I haven’t tried Capture. I have a reel for each of my Otaris (1/4” 1/2” and 1”) that I use constantly for bands that don’t want to buy their own tape. Still sounds great. What is it about the RTM that you like better than the ATR? Print thru and fidelity. I had one reel of ATR that had some shed issues a while back, although I’ve heard this isn’t normal. The ATR I’ve heard has what I can only describe as a mild glossy plastic sound.

I bought the Warm 1176 on craigslist for a deal a couple years ago (like $200 - i dont remember). Firgured I could flip it if i didnt like it.
Plugged it in. Played with it on vox, drums, bass etc. Unplugged it and put it on craigslist 10 minutes later.
Sold it the next day.
Not same ballpark of quality, tone, compression as my Hairball - which I love. The warm (and I assume KT) is more like a toy.

If you or anyone else want to demo the LH95, we have a pair of them at Access Analog powered by robots. You use their plugin to stream the audio to the analog units. A digital interface lets you change the settings on the analog gear remotely, and you can hear exactly what it sounds like. To get free 3 hours of demo time, reserve time on their website and use the coupon code trial-ia-lh95 on checkout. accessanalog.com/This is rad. I’ve had my eyes on this one. I’ll be doing that demo with the robots.

If I’m tracking vocals with a ribbon I’ll usually open up the top with 1 notch on electrodyne at 10k and a touch of Pultec at 16k broad q. Beautiful natural sound. Otherwise no eq during tracking for vox. Unless going to tape. For that application, you should consider trying the AEA RPQ500. Has some very nifty shaping tools, extremely high impedances and lots of gain. Funny, someone else suggested that pre recently. Few reasons why I probably won’t: I tried their original stand alone preamp years ago and it didn’t wow me. I sold all my 500 series stuff this year. I’m madly in love with the pres in my console - especially when paired with ribbons.

Okay just demoed the lindell 80 in a session and with the oversampling up it sounds really good. Gonna have to grab it. The SPL Iron is pretty interesting as well.

This extended voucher/sale has me thinking of trying some of their other stuff out. What are you guys using?
I have the Townhouse, SSL G, and Purple 77. I think they all are really good.
I demoed the Neold but it wasn’t blowing me away.

?? My PA Purple Mc77 has no options for oversampling or turning TMT off - can you elaborate? Digital stereo link turns TMT variance off. I thought it had oversampling buried somewhere? Maybe I misremembered? My Black Friday demo expired. It was too bright so I didn’t buy it but it took the peaks off where everything else 1176ish but the overloud 76 v2 failed Ah got it you are referring to stereo variance. I thought you meant turning it off completely. There is no option for over sampling anywhere as far as I can tell. I just demoed and bought it yesterday because like you said it’s the closest 1176 I’ve found (and $20 PA coupon). Insanely better than waves and slate. Ya it’s bright but can be corrected w eq if desired. I demoed the Neold and couldn’t justify it next to the MJUC and Molot.

Ok that’s some good feedback thanks guys! I’m going to head over to YouTube & do some research on some of these plugins. Is there any Acoustica Audio makes that’s better than / equivalent too UAD 1176 mk2 or other mk2 UAD plugs? No way on an 1176. They barely have anti-aliasing already in this strip and cpu use is out of control. A functional sub 1 ms attack rate compressor is not gonna happen. Check out Overloud 1176 V2 (oversampled), Plugin Alliance Purple Mc77 (Fully oversampled with TMNT off), TDR Molot GE (insane mode, alpha mode, saturation on and dynamic), Neold u73b, and Goodhertz Faraday Limiter for faster stuff that behaves better than UAD 1176. ?? My PA Purple Mc77 has no options for oversampling or turning TMT off - can you elaborate?

Not to keep hating on Brauer, he’s obviously well respected and more successful at this stuff than I will probably ever be, but the last Grizzly Bear album he mixes was really unlistenable to me. So harsh and weirdly over compressed. Such a shame because I like the music, but can’t listen through a whole song. The mix in the video reminds me of how that album sounds.

Lots of good info thank y’all! CPU power / buffer has been a big topic w/ Acoustica. Would I be able to run the Pink & Purple plugins on tracks or would I need to use them on Auxes & busses? I’m on a 2012 2.6gHz i7 MBP w / 16GB Ram & 850 Samsung SSD. Audio drive is OWC 3TB 720RPM HD dan thanks for the suggestions! I want to invest in good sounding tools that improve my workflow & efficiency. UAD sounds great & so does a free plugin like Kotelnikov from Tokyo Dawn Records/ Labs. I need to buy the GE ASAP cuz the free version smokes the expensive UAD Vertigo VSC-2 ( Softube coding? ) which I like. The VSC-2 even w/ a 90 Hz HPF will choke the low end & collapses/ weakens the in your face vocal like a waves SSL bus comp unless the release is fast or auto ime. I would be surprised if you could have more than 4 instances of purple running in a session

Ok that’s some good feedback thanks guys! I’m going to head over to YouTube & do some research on some of these plugins. Is there any Acoustica Audio makes that’s better than / equivalent too UAD 1176 mk2 or other mk2 UAD plugs? I haven't heard anything else ITB that touches Acustica Purple (Pultec). Purple comes with like 5 different sampled Pultecs or something, one of them being the Warm EQP-1A. Comparing the Warm Pultec to the other (vintage original) EQP-1A in Purple is ear-opening. Having said that, I use the Black Rooster EQP-1A more than Purple just because the convenience factor. The first time I heard an Acustica API plugin, it wasn't Pink - it was actually a library in Nebula. This was 2010 or so. It sounded so good that I got pissed off. I was hoping my Waves API Collection was going to hold up, but it wasn't even close. I was pissed b/c my computer at that time (a Core 2 Duo MBP) could barely run one band of that Nebula EQ. Over the last 3-4 yrs, the gap has been closing between Acustica and algorithmic plugins, but in quite a few cases, the Acustica plugins are still considerably ahead. I really dig Purple (Pultec), Cream (original TG stuff), Gold (classic Neve), and Pink (API). But they also really excel in the mastering EQ department, like Maselec (Ivory), Scarlet (Sontec), Green (GML), and Ruby (D.W. Fearn). DMG Audio's EQuilibrium can get really close with the curves if you use a large enough FIR window, but IME, the Acustica plugs have that little "something extra" when you turn on the "preamp" to get the analog vibe happening. EQuilibrium doesn't have anything like that in it. I wish it did. I demoed several of the channel strip type plugs from Acustica a couple years back, and ended up buying Cream first. The UI is kind of bizarre and a little off putting, but it just has vibe for days. Have you tried Noiseash Ruletec? It’s the closest plug-in I’ve used. Acoustica plug-ins are amazing but the CPU load is really hard to justify.

Just sold a pair of monitors on Reverb for $1600. Received $1412.
I did use a “reverb bump” that added to their percent.
Shipping cost me $250 out of pocket.
I had the monitors for sale locally for 7 months at $1200 with no bites so in the end not too bad, but you definitely need to include abt 15% on reverb.

The free EQ was not very useable for me either. Some of the pres and other compressors I demoed were pretty good. I can’t get over how much I love the LA4. THAT sound on clean electric guitars and bass.
