The iPhone 11 and 12 have stereo sound. The small speaker at the top of the phone that you hold up to your ear for phone calls plays loud when you're playing audio or videos and is the other channel of the stereo. Another mix checker. Not sure if you’re hip to an App/plug-in called Audreio. Basically allows you to check your mixes through your phone from your DAW. Works great!

Ha. I figured that out a while ago...but I don’t think there are speakers in both sides - some kind of witchery. I don’t know about that. There’s definitely two speakers at the bottom of the phone, and if you put your thumb over the speaker next to the front facing camera lens, you feel a pretty good vibration and lose the stereo effect.

Most of you with an iPhone are gonna demand I leave this forum, never to return for calling myself an “engineer” and not knowing this... BUT, if you turn your iPhone horizontally instead of vertically while listening to music, you get Stereo!!! I found out accidentally while walking my dog. He pulled me a little, forcing me to change the orientation of my hand, and it was like disengaging the Mono button! Holy crap! Flame away, I deserve it! If this helps one other person on this forum, it will not have been a waste.
PS: Not sure how many models have a speaker on both ends. Mine is an iPhone 11.

If you don't go more than 1/2 a bd it can be fine. Try a touch of 400 HZ in the side... Love this! Thanks! Side note... I picked up Waves Factory Spectre on sale and it does Stereo and M/S frequency dependent saturation. Really worth checking out. Just a touch of hi shelf in M/S can really add some subtle life to stereo sources, including mix bus.

If you don't have UAD, I'd probably try something from Relab like Sonsig or VSRS24. The latter still finds its way into my mixes. Never been a big fan of their 480. It might work for you though. I think it's been updated since I last messed around with it. Transatlantic Plate would be the first thing I'd try outside of UAD. See if you can get that to work for you, I've used it on some Metal stuff. Blackhole is something that sounds really cool in its promo videos but not something I've ended up using a lot. Another one to look at is Oxford Reverb. I'd buy it if Sonnox would drop their prices. Seems silly to me to be paying $165 or whatever for it nowadays. Seventh Heaven Pro could also do the job, I just don't think it's ideal for Metal. The 224 does something more than speed and sticking to the source, it adds a sort of liveliness and excitement. Sonsig and the NI attempt at the 224 sound didn't really live up to the UAD. I bought the Sonsig Rev-A. It was the best sounding algorithmic plugin reverb I've heard. It kicks the LX480's ass. The LX480 gui is convoluted and the sound reminds me too much of bad late 80s and 90s records. It's pretty subtle when not full blown wet. Sonsig can do subtle better and sounds much better wet. So does the Eventide SP2016. Something about that is magic. It does subtle and "good bright" rather than subtle and grainy or full blown wash. The LX480 almost sounds pre-gated. I'm going to buy the SP2016 and wait on the LX480. For the late 80s and early 90s recordings that sounded cool, the stuff that didn't sound like what was on the radio, I have the Goodhertz Megaverb. I'll probably need to get the LX480 eventually when a client wants that sound but whatever.
I wasn't huge on the Transatlantic plate. It doesn't blend well. It got pretty metallic like a special effect. The IRs need to be encased in an algorithm of some sort with some well thought out modulation to be more usable. Kush/Relab Goldplate blended better and sounds like it is covered in cigarette and reefer smoke. drbill seems to be onto something about these algorithmic verbs being easier to use. You and I must hear things similarly, because Relab Sonsig has become my go to and try as I may, I just can’t seem to connect with Transatlantic.

Just an update for anyone interested... After having this product for about a month now, I can honestly say that I’m super impressed. I just finished my first mix on them in conjunction with my Adam S3a’s/Sonarworks in a fairly treated room. I always put Ozone on my master bus when I feel I’m like 80% there to see what EQ it suggests (Master Assistant). For the first time EVER, it suggested only a tiny shelf at 22hz and a tiny shelf at 17k! I was floored by that. Now, that doesn’t mean it’s a great mix. My skills are what they are. What I can say is that this mix absolutely translates everywhere I’ve checked it. I didn’t turn on my NS10’s once! They are there for decoration now. The NRG NS10 model w/sub fit the bill perfectly for checking my mids and setting vocal levels, as well as identifying out of control transients. And trust me, I’m no Slate fanboy. I’ve had it out with him several times over his Drum products. I haven’t tried anything he put out since he went subscription, and the products I used to use have been replaced by better sounding (to me) alternatives. But the VSX system is absolutely the real deal and I believe a true innovation. I’ve used Sonarworks for years and while I believe it to be an improvement over just my speakers, there’s always something I find strange with it. When I bypass it, my speakers just seem to “wake up” and the soundstage improves with an albeit less accurate frequency response, in my room. (And btw, I’ve spent close to 5 grand on room treatments and Sonarworks isn’t being asked to do a whole lot.) Anyway, all that to say, the VSX gives me confidence in what I’m hearing on a level that I’ve never had before. I wholeheartedly recommend giving them a try if you aren’t certain that your room is telling you the truth. I’ll post the mix in the “What are you working on” page in a few days. Flame on. Awesome to hear. I’ve been on the fence about ordering a pair since they were announced. Which room are you finding most useful for mixing? The Archon Mid Field has become my go to, followed by the NRG NS10s. To me, they required the least amount of learning, I’m guessing because the room dimensions are similar to my room. Some of the other ones take some getting used to. I found that closing my eyes and picturing myself in whatever room I’ve chosen, really helps in wiring my brain to make sense of what I’m hearing. For instance, the NRG room is a much bigger room than mine, so the distance and reflections are not what I’m used to, so I imagine myself in that room and somehow my brain settles in and it starts to sound natural. Listening to reference material you’re familiar with is also a must. One other really cool thing is that when I have to dial in an outboard EQ, compressor or reverb, I’m never leaving the sweet spot!

I’ll definitely give it a try. Thank you! But to be honest, I kind of like the sweetness! I know that makes me a lightweight, but I’m ok with that, lol. I had to “learn” to even appreciate whiskey over the years, and I think I “get it” now, but I’m not above just appreciating something that is so dangerously drinkable, like I find the BH. Cheers!

Just picked up a bottle. No expert here, but damn, it’s really really nice. The only thing I had that was similar is Angels Envy (port barrel), but for the price, this may become a staple. Thanks for the tip!

Haha, I bought this cuz I like PB and I like Whiskey. What could go wrong?? So... by itself, it’s way too sweet for me. It’s really good believe it or not, with Hot chocolate. It’s also nice to add a half shot to two shots of real whiskey, neat. But yeah, I get the repulsion....

Thanks so much for reminding me of this! Between laziness and umm, more laziness, I had stopped doing this. Years ago, I was telling everyone about it, then at some point I got tired of looking it up all the time (cuz I couldn’t remember the different cents) Anyway, I just happened upon this thread today and tried it again, and man, what a huge difference on open string acoustic gtr!!! I had tracked some acoustics the other day, but the tempo was a little fast for the song I was sketching out, so I decided to bump it down a few BPM and re track. Night and day difference! It just melts into the track.... THANK YOU!

I’ve really been enjoying Blantons with Buffalo Trace as my backup. Just a minute or two to let the ice melt a bit... so nice. Perhaps a little OT, but Brockmans Gin w/Tonic might be my favorite drink ever! (until the cold weather hits.) It’s really on a different level. Cheers!
PS: Look forward to trying some of the suggestions on here. Thanks!

I plan on trying these as soon as they’re available. If you’re a believer in Sonarworks (as I am), it would be foolish not to at least give them a spin. If they are only good for reference, I’ll return or sell them. They’d only be worth it to me if I can mix on them. I believe this is the future, and if it’s not ready yet, it soon will be. Between Dutch and Dutch, Kii3, Trinnov, etc, the tech already exists. Just a matter of time before proper DSP monitoring comes down to a price point we can all afford.
I haven’t bought anything from Slate since he started the subscription thingy, and currently only use VTM, occasionally, even though I have most of his plugins. The fact that you had to buy his drum samples for SSD and Trigger separately, is a total punk move IMHO.
That said, I absolutely can’t wait to give these a try. His passion and genuineness is real, even if those things collide with his business/marketing practices and usefulness of his products at times.

In addition to Sonarworks, putting an acoustical “cloud” over the mix position. I had a crap load of Real Traps and GIK traps in my room with decent results, but when I put up the cloud, I was shocked at how much tighter things got.

I have a Lawson 251 and have heard the 47 capsule on several occasions. I’d say, if you’re looking for a very good mic and the price is really good, grab it. If you’re looking for something super close to a real 47, it won’t take you there, imo. Yes, Gene is a really nice guy, but something to consider; his microphone line is convertible, similar to Korby. The electronics in the body are the same if you buy his 47 or 251, and then he tunes the capsule both by ear and measurement to replicate a 47 or 251. So it’s not trying to be a clone circuit-wise. Hope this helps!

They have some interesting and unique products, but too CPU intensive for what I tend to do. I have Movement, Signal, and Rev. Really nice for spicing up a track with tempo synched sounds. Movement is especially cool, because it’s not a synth, but a plugin that takes your recorded tracks and adds synth like envelopes and such. But it’s a CPU HOG!

I’ll make a contextual comment, and ask you, was it fun and did it engage you to be musical, engineer and produce ? For a number of months, you have been describing revisiting a great deal of your previous set up and process, so you were looking for change, improvement: something different ? So, the question is expanded with do you feel like you found what you were looking for, it seems it ? Interesting question, and a pertinent one. Perhaps the most important one..... was it fun and engaging. Well, yes it was. Now some of that is cause its new, shiny.... and new and shiny always wins, at least at first. But, also I have a lot of experience with midi, samples and e drums. (going back to building my own e drum kit, and using bob clear mountain samples loading one 1M floppy at a time into a Akai S1100 sampler... 8).......) The world of e drums and software is vastly improved and far less frustrating than it was. Also, remember this is the first tune I have done like this and I am using a preset. cheers Wiz Ha, I used to use the Bob Clearmountain Samples too with an S900! Brings back memories. I’m strongly considering making the jump as well, but not being a good drummer is holding me back. Im thinking I could get a decent performance, than quantize and fill in the blanks by punching in or manually if necessary. I’m also wondering if you guys think the Roland TD1-DMK or Yamaha DTX522K would suffice? Is the more expensive kits necessary to achieve a decent performance or is it just a matter of more enjoyment? Really cool song BTW, Wiz!

Bummer. Thanks swurveman. In reality, if buying today, it's cheaper to buy EZ2 and cross-grade than to buy SD3. Not a lot, but a bit. I noticed that. Can you do that in one step or would I have to buy EZ2 and THEN crossgrade, I wonder?

Ever the Trailblazer, I think I’m going to jump in on this “SD3” that all the kids seem to be talking about these days, despite there being no BF sale... The plan is to also pick up the Bob Rock SDX as well.
So, for those of you that already went through this, I’m wondering if there’s any advice you could impart, to make for a smooth process. Like a, “If you knew then what you know now”, what would you have done differently? What other libraries should I be looking at, download strategy, SSD drive?, etc. Thanks!
