LOL. There's definitely some exaggerated marketing speak as usual, but as with all other Slate stuff, I think it looks cool. This would be probably be killer for mobile work. Or maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to blow $500.

Whatever you think about the guy, his drive and ambition is admirable.

Here's what will really blow your mind...
That guy in the video? He's not even the real Steven Slate. That's an animatronic robot whose face & voice were MODELED after the real Steven Slate.
The real Steven Slate retired years ago on a beach in Fiji.

Honestly, I could see trying these out. Not to mix on per se, but as a mix check thing. I’m getting sucked in.

I am skeptical.
AKG or Sennheiser for example have decades of experience in producing cans, and suddenly Slate knows it all, and for sure - better. The sentence "clearly below 20 Hz" made me even super skeptical.
Working under cans is a big compromise - to my ears.

Very interesting! Priced higher than I thought they would be though. I look forward to hearing some real world results.

There are so many generic OEM headphone drivers these days. Did I mention years ago I found the exact same drivers in Target $10 headphones as Beats?

Goddamnit Steven. Dude knows how to sell me on pretty much anything. Why would anyone need cans to produce music on "the world's greatest speakers"? Doesn't make sense - if you have "the world's greatest speakers" USE THEM and to hell with the cans!
Cans destroy the sense of soundfield anyway.
And I thoght this was a "headphone system? Which to me means a SYSTEM of phones, listening/mix stationms and amps for the sdtudio.
This is just another headphone shuck.

I've always been interested in this kind of thing. I have the Focusrite version of this idea from the 2000's. It had emulations of NS10's as well as some hifi speakers and consumer stuff and a few different 'spaces' to listen in. Also the simpler Beyer plug in and the Waves plugin version too. While somewhat useful, I wouldn't mix primarily on any of them. I don't use any of them regularly any more.
I'm curious about Slate's attempt. It would have to be a convincing and pleasing binaural image and environment to keep headphones on for any length of mixing time, much less trusting what you were hearing. Not to say nailing it would be impossible. DSP gets better and more capable every day it seems.

Software and DSP are great ways to compensate for cheap drivers, or for that matter great expensive drivers.

I just find this as a great idea for checking your mixes. There’s a video on the sweet water site of some of the “pros” comments and one dude talks about the boom box emu and how you can really pick out the 808 distortion and get it right for boom boxes and the like... I wouldn’t trust these to mix on, but I would think they could be valuable to give you perspective and differing opinions. What’s wrong with that?

I just think we have so many HP systems today you just have to draw a line. My line is:
OK on Geithian 906 with and without Sonarworks DSP OK on AKG K 701 with and without Sonarworks DSP OK on Yamaha NS 10 with and Without Sonarworks DSP.
DONE NEXT SONG.....
There is no way that I can fit all modern systems. Special not those who are placed in a corner with subwoofer on - which also take your verbal advises SIRI....

Seems intriguing, yet unnecessary. I am impressed by the concept at least.

That's actually a pretty good argument for the Slate headphone. I guess it's much cheaper and practical to buy one headphone than a Geithian, a k701, a NS10 and Sonarworks. Also, I saw people comparing very favorable to an Audeze, which is saying a lot. I'll put in my "I'll think about it" list.

For this to replace the need for multiple mix speaker references seems like quite a longshot.
For 500$ you could pick up an old boom box, popular bluetooth speaker, some mix cubes and audreio for your iphone to monitor your mixes. I don't really see the utility in having software that will make your headphones somewhat resemble the sound of expensive speakers, this just seems like a waste of time to me.

And yet it's not the same there are a lot of papers why using HP is a compromise. And there is one big danger, humans tend to monitor way too loud under cans.

Only somewhat related, when I got my Barefoot monitors I was super stoked on the MEME switching technology. I figured I’d be able to lose my other monitors and just use them by switching between the settings.
I LOVE the monitors, but that MEME stuff is totally useless for me, I wound up unplugging the switch and just putting it back in the case after a month or so.
I could see myself feeling the same way with Steven’s headphone system. I’m good with my Beyers and Sonarworks has made them translate beautifully.
I’d give them a shot if a friend had a pair though...

Paul Wolff was involved on the design of this headphone.
I'm more interested now.

Paul Wolff was involved on the design of this headphone. I'm more interested now. Slate does some great tools. If his cans sound like sitting in a real room I eat my words. I still doubt that you can simulate a control room under cans ....
