Hi John, some things to consider… While there’s no doubt you are getting the truth from your current setup, not all speakers excel at all things. In VSX, I use different speakers to reveal different things. For instance, I’ve always used NS10’s for LV Level and transient recognition. The Mike Dean NS10’s do a better job at that task than my real ones. There are different speakers and rooms in VSX that I now lean on for different things. If there is anything in your current setup that you feel could be better, VSX probably has something for you. That said, if my mixes sounded like yours, I’d be spending my money on other things than gear. Hope this helps. Mitch you forget the one problem with any of these emulation systems, you can’t take out the distortion and brea up character of the drivers. You can play with phase EQ and add some distortion but you can’t make the natural character of any transducer I can EQ and maybe duplicate the phase of a pair of ATC’s with software and NS10’s but the distortion character is still going to be that of NS10’s. Even the reverse won’t quite work because while ATC’s are very low distortion speakers, compared to say a mic pre amp, it’s still high as hell. I hear you, but I don’t think anything in my post suggested they perfectly replace $200k worth of speakers for $450. Only that I find them useful. I also heavily rely on Adam S3a’s, but unfortunately for me, my room doesn’t translate low end all that well, despite a lot of money and trial and error spent on room treatment. In the end, all I care about is real world translation, and VSX helps me get closer to achieving that.

Yes, it’s gimmicky. It’s also the best purchase I’ve made in recent memory. I have spent a small fortune on monitors and room treatment. I’m at the point where I think my only options to upgrade would be Trinnov or speakers that calibrate themselves to the room like Dutch Audio or Kii, or of course hiring an acoustic consultant. I was very skeptical too, but a very high profile recording engineer that I used to assist for told me they were the real deal, so I tried them. Glad I did. I’ve tried the Waves stuff and thought it was a letdown in comparison to my monitors with the Trinnov. I’m getting sucked in by the latest marketing campaign though. Any new thoughts from anyone? Are you the original owner and do you know their age ? Did servicing include any parts replacement, caps in crossovers ? Thx. I am the original owner. They were a floor model and I got them for about 2k because of the chip. This was around 2005-ish. I sent them in for service because one of the tweeters sounded a little off. I don’t remember exactly what was replaced except for one tweeter, but they said they went through everything. If by chance, you live anywhere close to South NJ, you’re welcome to come over for a listen.

“I'd appreciate if everyone could try and upload picture attachments to something like imgbb.com/“ I went to sign up for imgbb, but they wanted a credit card for their free service, and I got spooked.

These are the same model Studio Monitors Bob Clearmountain used for years. (That’s why I originally bought them!) They were factory serviced a few years ago and sound amazing! There is 1 chip in the beautiful green finish that you’ll see in the pictures in the link below. $800 firm. (Originally retailed for almost 4K.) We can work out shipping costs when I see where I’d be shipping them. gearspace.com/board/gearspace-secondhand-gear-classifieds/1395927-krk-systems-e7.html

Yes, it’s a steal imo! I have so many saturation plugins too, but this one really speaks to me.

Following. Great thread. I’m sooo tempted to sell a few things and grab this. Maybe I missed it, but I couldn’t tell if you ever got around to using the 4 capsule measurement mic for the capture? Thanks for sharing!

IR and convolution based? Not sure, but it doesn’t respond like IR to me.

What sources are you liking it on? I assume it's a fixed Q, is that right? It’s definitely proportional. So far I haven’t removed it from anything I’ve tried it on, but stand outs are Ld Vox, bass and mix bus. Mind blowing, really. The only thing I wish it had was a per band bypass. And I so wish I could get two hands on real dials to play with the shaping/ band interaction.

This EQ is pure magic. The 800 hz band is worth the price of admission alone. I’m just in love with the tone this plugin brings. Hard to describe, but different from any EQ I’ve ever heard. I highly recommend a demo.

[...] Also, I’m having very little luck finding fills to start a bar/section. It seems all the fills are at the end of the bar. (Think D’yer Mak’er, although not necessarily that grand) What am I missing? Thanks! Re: this part of your post (fills), one thing I've found is I have to be pretty ruthless in chopping stuff up and moving it to where I want in my DAW. So I may like the sound of a fill that was played at the end of a bar, but I want it for an intro - no big deal: just chop it up, delete everything but the fill, move that fill to the intro. (Or whatever.) I should also note that some of my favorite fills are ones played by Chris Whitten in the Custom & Vintage pack. They're much simpler and more straightforward, and just meet my aesthetic much more closely than many of the fills in other packs. That’s pretty much what I do too. Thanks for the tip on C&V!

I’m a fan of the Brute by Inward Connections. I just really connect with the tone of that company and I often track with it because I get the tone and subtle control without ever have to hear any compression artifacts. For some reason, I have a hard time doing that with a La2.

Hey SD3 midi users, I’ve heard some of you say that you’ve just bought a ton of packs in order to optimize the potential of finding the right groove or fill for any situation. How’d that work out for you and any packs in particular you’ve found indispensable? Also, I’m having very little luck finding fills to start a bar/section. It seems all the fills are at the end of the bar. (Think D’yer Mak’er, although not necessarily that grand) What am I missing? Thanks! It’s really hit or miss, which is why the wide net approach seems to be best. Fills are especially challenging, I tend to use the simpler ones and it becomes part of the aesthetic. The best Bonham-y midi pack I have is the one that came with the Eddie Kramer SDX, FWIW. Full disclosure: my approach is to find what can work for me, not to reproduce a beat I’ve conjured in my head. That becomes a kind of process of discovery and sparks some of the direction of the tune, adds to the inspiration in the moment. By the way, I think there is a way to preview beats from the toontrack store in app. But what I’m not sure about is, do they offer a la carte pricing? I’d rather pay $5 for a beat I know I want , than to try and suss out which collection has the most stuff I’ll use. Thanks for the reply. I use the tap to find feature to find something pretty close and adjust by hand to get it where I hear it needing to be. The intro drum fill I was asking about has nothing to do with Bonham. I just meant ANY fill that starts a section as opposed to to ending it.
