I love all music. one of my main influences for many decades now is Frank Sinatra. not long ago I heard and then bought an album called Watertown. 2 songs on it, that I find incredibly powerful, incredibly moving are For a While and Peter & Michael. the album has an interesting story (or 50), about it. here's a wiki to it. followed by stuff I read in an article from which I will quote and then link to. and last I'll add a review that I find fascinating. the album came out the same year Frank did My Way (which I read he did not like), and this review was just written a couple years ago. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watertown_(album)and now from the article I'll link to: "EO: What do you remember about the recording sessions with Sinatra? JH: I can remember a couple of things very, very well. One was the respect Sinatra showed us as writers. I was very much taken with that. Here I am this little guy from nowhere, and he would come up to me with a lric and say, "Can I change this 'the' to an 'and?" Or he would say, "This isn't working: should this be the way?" I was absolutely blown away by his respect for lyricists and songwriters. He is a real aficionado of songs. The other thing I remember about him was his way with a song. He didn't sing a song to show how well he could sing. He always got into a song. He would sing the words because they mattered to him. A lot of contemporary singers sing to show you how great they can sing. The thing I respected most about Sinatra as a singer was his commitment to the song, as opposed to his own voice. It was a very honest thing which I think is the key to his success as an artist." www.watertownology.com/jake.htmlwww.theparisreview.org/blog/2013/03/14/blue-eyes-in-watertown/and just a parting comment about Frank. he was such an effective interpreter of songs. his ability to feel, and to feel deeply , and then communicate that feeling in an exquisite magical way is to me in some ways unparalleled. if he was a baseball player at bat, and he hit the ball, one could say that "he got all of it", as the ball sailed way over the fence for yet another resounding grand slam shot. his ability to powerfully and beautifully sing about the human experience, the ups and downs, the love, the sadness, the joys and ecstasy, and the blues and the pits.....well, he was damn good at it. his swaggering, and commanding and courageous yet vulnerable style reminds me of a couple other people: Capt James Tiberius Kirk of the Starship Enterprise and Elton John. ok, now I need sleep.

hey y'all, a piano playing friend (awesome player), told me about this new piano program whch will be released, a week from Monday. I checked the introductory video on Youtube. I love the C7 piano and the LA Custom Model E Rhodes. and Cory Henry......I think he's the best player I've ever heard. there are a couple other people in there that you may have of before demoing it too. so, I'll post a link to that video, and to the company website. and then, for entertainment purposes on this beautiful Saturday night, I will post another video, (related because its about piano). www.spectrasonics.net/products/keyscape/

awesome post yotonic. btw the influence that Stevie Wonder has had on me is infinitely large. fascinated to hear that he used an SM7.
with regards to age and old........I like the idea that age is mind over matter.....if you don't mind, it doesn't matter. everyday's a gift. like its own mini life time. my boss almost died last week. sudden big heart attack. 5 hours of emergency heart surgery. blah blah blah. he's a couple years older than me. but just a couple. he said it was a wake up call. he said his new response to everything is "I don't care". yeah man, got to find a way to keep the stress at bay. I say. lol anyways, I'm exactly the age that George Harrison died at. I remember when he died, I was 44. a 58 year old dude, well.....he wasn't old......but he wasn't THAT young........hmph.........now I'm 58. I see 58 from the direct experience of being 58. man it went fast. still is. ah, where was I? oop, gotta go. I think I gotta chase some kids off my lawn. hahhahahahhaha

"Ok, so not be argumentative, but I don't think it has a proximity effect much at all. Like all dynamics, it sounds as intended in close micing scenarios. It literally CAN'T have a huge proximity effect because it's designed to be used in close proximity. It would just be shitty if that were the case. If it put a huge proximity bump but didn't pick up unless you're right up on it? Ha.
But, it also won't sound ANYTHING like an re20....any more than a U87 sounds like a 414. It's the same yin/yang of top end dynamic mics."
hey popmann, I am fascinated by your comment. I have always wanted to try one of these mics (I never have). what attracts me, is having read that James Ingram recorded "Just Once" on one. that is one of my favorite songs, (and btw, a song that really inspired me to play keys). as for Ingram's vocal on that song, I guess I just always assumed that there was some proximity effect going on there. thank you for your post and clarifying that for me.

hey aremos. I love my e-drums. I only play them for fun. and not often either. but when I do, it is sooooo much fun. in my most humble and super uneducated opinion, I will say this from my experience, fully realizing that your mileage may vary, and many things are very much subjective and personal. (let me emphasize: your mileage may vary because of many reasons.......different tastes......different computer specs and power and so on.....) my experience with my TD15kv is that they play great by themselves. the VH11 works fine. they are incredibly awesome, because with the push of a button or a turn of a knob, you've got many many different drum and percussion sounds to play with. also, I love the volume knob. I can have excellent snare tone and all sounds as soft or loud as I want. not so with an acoustic snare (not looking to debate pro's and cons here. at all. I am simply describing MY experience. I am a singer/guitarist, who likes to dabble in lots of other instruments.) in addition, being able to play VST's, hooked to a computer, gives many more drum and percussion sounds. great fun. with a caveat which I will explain:
the VH11....I have read other people say that its just as good as the VH12. but it may feel different because it only has 1 cymbal instead of 2. if you google you will find people comparing them. also for the benefit of the OP. MY experience of the VH11 is this: works great with its module. however, when I hook it to the computer with SD 2, all bets are off. very sketchy. maybe I'm just not good at setting it up. don;t know. just sayin. (I hereby give up trying to not hit ; instead of '. sorry.) with BFD 3, I think it works better.

hey M57, I know next to nothing. so if I make mistakes here, hopefully someone will correct me. I can only tell you my recent experience. I have recorded using an RME Babyface and a Focusrite 6i6. the max input rating at 0dB for their AD's are +12 dBu and +9 dBu, respectively. a while back, someone told me that those are kinda low ratings. so, if I want to turn up my preamps, their gonna overload or clip or distort the AD's. enter the Svartbox!! it is rated in the mid +20's dBu's. that is professional level. I can turn up my preamp. AND also, I am able to record at less hot levels, to allow more headroom for mixdown. think about that. its like a double gift. its like "I have good news AND good news!!" lol (please be clear here, that I am an amateur who knows very little about all of the above. I spend 90% of my music time working on getting better at singing and playing acoustic guitar, once in a while keys. all other technical skills and knowledge are minimal.) that said, to my ears, it sounds better. quieter, clearer, more detailed. better. I am sooooo glad I bought my Svartbox. mind you, it is the first time I have used an external converter. also, just so you know, it entailed running coax rca terminated cables from the Svartbox to the Focusrite 6i6 digital input. so the Svartbox is the clock and the AD conversion. the Focusrite AD conversion is not used (as I don't have anything plugged into the Focusrite analog inputs). on the way out, the coax rca cable goes to the Svartbox, and the AD converter does its thing, and there are 2 1/4" outs (a stereo pair). (there are 2 1/4" ins on the Svartbox, for stereo analog inputs). hope this helps.

I learned more about playing guitar from Mary's video, than I have from every other teacher in my whole life, put together. her ability to explain really complex stuff, in a really simple way, yet never in a condescending, or looking down on you, kind of way, is really unfathomable. since watching her video, I can truly say that I have experienced a rebirth in my enthusiasm to grow and become the best guitarist that I am capable of becoming. watching her video has been a watershed experience for me. and yet, I somehow get the sense that she's really only begun. I predict that she is on her way to re-writing the book, for guitar playing instruction. one can hope that she will teach other instruments, and maybe singing too, someday.

hey Sinsay, you're amazing, man. thank you so much. a couple words about your mic: -it is open, detailed. it comprehensively captures all in a most flattering and pleasing way. in a heavenly way. it is even across the freq spectrum. -the proximity effect is very beautiful. -when it gets hit harder with signal (my vocal), it never pinches. it never folds up. it very gently distorts or overloads in a most pleasing and flattering and beautiful way. (repeating adjectives here. doing the best I can, as we know talking about music is like dancing about architecture.) -think rich, full, euphonic, honey, molasses, thick......think about all the excellent sounds that are in your head, that you're trying to get to come out out of your mouth singing.......and now think about a mic that actually picks that ALL up.....and does it in ways, that make you crazy happy. think top level, high class. think mojo that can make you laugh and cry. the capture of emotions. think magic. thats your mic, man. thank YOU again Sinsay!!!
