Omg...I just fell off my chair! Amen brothers, let's get this ball rolling! Sign me up! I have a collection of good machinists up here. I can get the materials, but due to just acquiring 6 new very demanding customers in the last month, I just can't machine my own parts at this time. Let's start with the type of steel/brass we want for the body. I don't want to leave any stone unturned. 3 polar pattern or 9? Variable or detented? Shaken or stirred?

Best mic ever made, IMHO. If I had one, there are about 20 mics I wouldn't need.

Subscribing to this thread!...so many AEs I meet seem to be on the same quest, so this could become a valuable resource and reference for the process...nice!

I have two mics built with this White 251 P.S.B. with Tim Campbell capsules in the HT11 bodies with 251 headbaskets. However my music computer isn't connected to the internet and I'm waiting for the R.M. Super Beast II interface. ( it's a promised speedy order ) When Tony C comes by I try to post a test. I'd be interested in a couple bodies, I already have the rest of the parts, or the whole new deal if it develops.

I assume Telefunken won't sell theirs without the capsule?

I like the dark, black chrome headbaskets on microphones. I am going to a vendor today for work and I will find out about chroming the headbaskets. I used to work for a wirecloth company and I am checking into materials for a headbasket.

There are a couple of my microphones that need sprucing up and black-chroming them would be brilliant.

There are a couple of my microphones that need sprucing up and black-chroming them would be brilliant. There is a flat rate for number of pieces, for example, 1 piece could cost as much as 20 pieces. Once I get samples and quotes I will let you know. 1 offs are expensive, so I will hopefully get enough people on board to make it cost effective. I realize that these cosmetic pieces are very personal and I will strongly caution the vendor that they need to be handled with utmost care, or they will be purchasing a new part. Personally, I take my gear to heart, and I take great care as if the gear was my own. With that note, make sure that it is a replaceable headbasket, and not something very rare that cannot be replaceable. I cannot control operator error. I will get mine done first as a sample piece and post a pic. There is a lot to consider when I have pieces outsourced, as opposed to doing them in house, in which I prefer the latter. I deal with these vendors on a daily basis for my day job, so I'm not too concerned. In my line of work we deal with very tight tolerances, quality and cosmetics are everything. It is finally nice to find a very cool place to congregate and make our 251 dream build happen. Thanks to all who participate, and especially JK for such a great forum bringing all the superlative people together!

its been a minute since i been back , i know of a place here in nashville that does excellent work plating , I did the miktek CV3 pro type rings there, they came out awesome. They do all the chroming for the car shows you see on Spike and velocity ( some on that channel ) , guitfiddler If your contact doesn't go through let me know maybe we can round up a batch of stuff for here here as well has anyone found the head basket ( grill ) like or closer to the 251? other than c12 looking one? I can make them ( made Korby ones, and others etc ) I think I have tooling still maybe any interested in those let me know who is >…. I would be more than willing to do a run of bodies ( remember the cut out is for pattern switch so would have to adapt or simply not have that cut in it… as well the grills as a run who would be interested worst case i can run the body tubes with correct diameter and length ( you would have to check your build, ) and get them all the correct color the grills take a lot of time but can be done . I'm just pissing in the wind, maybe we can adapt one specific kit or i can do the end bell, grill, body the rest up to you so i willing to make a run if enough people are interested, as well as suggestions ( i may take that back later ) lmfao

I will let you know as soon as I go back to the chroming vendor. I usually go there every other week. It might be a week or two before I have the info, but that sounds fine if we want to use your place if it is more convenient and quicker. I usually go there once or twice a month. We haven't done any chroming in a while, we mostly just anodize, passivate, and zinc chemfilm. I know more than a few places that do the chroming around here, but most of the places are an hour north of me, and it's hard to get to these places while on the job. They aren't open on the weekend, or I would have gone up there yesterday. I would be very interested in an end bell, body, and grill. I think this might turn into an addictive hobby. I really enjoy hearing great microphones that impart their characters on the source.

I would want use the 47 head if your going for such a big boy, you may even have room to drop use a subminiature tube that wire in or make a adpator plate to mount in and out. I have to check but I think 5703 would be your best candidate I think it was modeled after the AC 701

Quick question from a non DIY guy. No disrespect intended, but if memory serves, Tony Cambell said the Blackspade 251 clone with his capsule stands up to anything he's heard, including original 251's. Why not look there for parts or just buy that? Is it too expensive? I don't know what they cost.

Oops, thanks Wiz ! yep Tim.
Obviously, it's likely the Blackspade is twice as much or more than the DIY, and with Sinsay involved, there's the potential to go even a step further, but for non builders, it's nice to know it can be done.
I happened to try the Telefunken AR 51 for two minutes last week, and it sounded very good, and reminded me of my Blackspade, only a little more low end warmth. Is that a 251 style mic?

How much are the Tim Cambell Caps 251 Blackspades? I have heard and used Bock 151 & 251 mics and I haven't heard an ELAM 251, so I really don't know how they compare, but I love the Bock mics.

There are no more Blackspade UM25C (Campbell cap), but they went for just under $3K...last incarnation was the TAB version, but I'm not sure if they are still available since Oliver's untimely passing: www.tab-funkenwerk.com/id134.html

Thanks Kid, I was looking around but couldn't find any info on them. I think Blackspade has a new 251 based mic coming out soon. I wonder if it's with a Tim Campbell capsule
If anyone can do it, Shannon can.
