Sounds like a deeper issue honestly.

It’s even easier to be an adult and use your personal ignore function that is built into your brain. It works pretty well if you nurture it 👍🏻

If you are capable of building either your own Hairball or CAPI 500 series gear, it’s almost unbeatable IMO. The sound is unparalleled for the price too.
I’m keeping myself from trying the platinums cause I know I’ll fall in love and just can’t spend the money on stuff like that right now.

My answer would be a straight up No.
I’ve had every clone out there aside from something that’s come out within the past 6 months to a year next to either our tele badged or Neumann badged long body. Both have the real deal tube and neither are showing any signs of needing any work done.
There is always minimum 15% missing. And that seems to be the most important part.
I’ll also say that :gasp: I don’t put that mic in front of just anybody. You’ve got to honestly deserve to sing into something like that for me to consider taking it out of the mic locker. And even in that case, many times the 47 isn’t what’s needed on a voice.

I’ve used a bunch of the originals. They are all a bit different, but the one consistent thing is what John is saying, the headroom is a bit of a problem.
That said, if you want a rock and roll guitar sound you don’t have to look much further than a Helios. It has it in spades. Other than that I don’t generally reach for them much.
I know a guy that has a Helios console that is sitting in a crate waiting for his studio build to be finished. Maybe I can convince him to have an RGO event when it’s all hooked up and we can stand around and drool 😅

I’m with Bill on this one with the exception of the controls. I prefer 2 sets with one side that controls the other for stereo link. It’s always great to be able to use a stereo comp on separate mono sources when tracking.
Switched knobs always.
HPF is always helpful.
XLR in’s and outs!!!!

2019.5 is trash. Just had another crash and lost all my presets. Hopefully there will be a stable 2019 version - then I’m done. That’s a bummer John. Have you noticed any patterns of when it crashes? Posssibly when the system hits a certain limit or when you use a certain combination of plugins or hardware inserts or something? Or is it just straight up random?

Any other modern reference tracks you guys are digging? I'm LOVING this Bruno track. The bottom is so legit. Vocals and BGV's are great. Really everything. I'd love to hear some more modern rock type stuff for reference tracks. My buddy mixed the Sempiternal record by Bring Me The Horizon. He’s constantly getting asked to make songs sound like that. Not sure if that’s what you mean by modern rock. Not my thing.

I’d just add that a completely dead room isn’t great for vocals IME

I roll on a perpetual and upgrade when I think it’s needed and WELL after any bugs are worked out. It’s how I make my living so I have no problem paying for it. I’m on 12 and have no reason to upgrade to ultimate at the moment. Not having the new updates isn’t keeping me from working.
I can honestly say I’ve never had a problem on hdx or vanilla. 🤷🏻♂️

1 - 27”. Flipping between mix and edit windows is quick and easy enough, and after my initial mix stuff, I do it all in the edit window anyways when I’m itb.
Two screens would mean I’d have to lose a set of monitors. And I don’t really want to do that.
The giant tv thing isn’t for me either. I’ve worked in studios that had them mounted behind the console and it wasn’t for me.

Big fan of ribbons on Toms. Lately been doing M160’s and it’s my favorite spot for them.

its Always fun when you’re in a room you’ve never worked in, with an assistant that isn’t exactly on top of their shit, a Neve VR with shoddy routing buttons, and trying to set up for a 40 input cast recording. Oh great we’ve figured out 3/4 of the stuff that doesn’t work and the musicians and singers are here. AWESOME!
So, I’ve learned to keep a cool head, start from what could be the most simple problem and work my way back from there. Also, if you make it seem like everything is normal while you’re doing this, nobody will be any the wiser.
That particular day I showed up 3 hours early just cause I was a bit worried about not having worked on a VR before, and I wanted to patch the signal gen in to some channels and see what my options were.. I’ll die a happy man if I never see one of those things ever again.
Also, that studio is one in NYC I didn’t shed a tear for when it went under.

Are you mixing other people’s work or mixing something that you track?
If you’re tracking it, there is no reason to get into the slipping around of tracks. It’s always going to lead to problems.
Best way to get around this is to move microphones and get the polarity and phase right first.
Moving a room mic so the initial transient hits at the exact same time as the snare drum close mic defeats the purpose of even having a room mic IMO. The slight time delay is part of the effect of having a room mic.
For guitars, If you are using more than 1 mic, place the mics. Then push one of the strings down until it hits the pickup and makes a pop noise. Record that sound and then zoom in as far as your daw will allow. That will let you see not only phase, but also alignment. If you’ve got 2 close mics, start moving the microphones independently of one another until they line up perfectly.

Holy crap - they actually put a real polar pattern switch on it instead Of the horrid cheap looking ones that are on every clone. That mic looks absolutely astounding...
Nice work folks at Heiserman!

From the purple site- ol devil himself fletcher described it as such ”here's a quick and dirty test to give you an idea of how much shmutz has built up on the capsule over time... breath on the grill basket of the mic like you're trying to fog a mirror. If the capsule has a lot of dirt on it then the moisture from your breath will weigh down the diaphragm from it's normal movement and it will stick [temporarily] to the backplate of the capsule meaning that the capsule needs to be at very least cleaned, and very possibly replaced.” I sure do miss his snark- hope retirement/ the bar & food business is treating him well but I digress..... A couple posts back back I shared quick Dropbox audio link of mine failing and shorting out if you wanna check that out to @hermetechmastering Thanks, yes, your test was why I asked. So how can you tell if it passes or fails the test? What are you listening for? The diaphragm will short out and the mic will sound like it’s dead until the moisture dissipates. Almost sounds like when you hit phantom on without your speakers muted.

Question. Aren’t Gibson’s supposed to be Plekked coming out of the factory? I thought they were. Cheers, Geoff I was under the impression that all guitars that left the Gibson factory had their final fretwork finishing done by a plek machine. Maybe I read that wrong like 5 years ago or something and was under the wrong impression.

Well finally getting around to breath testing and putting this new 1972 u87 through some paces, and drumroll......it fails the breath test.$#%$% Here's a link to the audio test- www.dropbox.com/s/6rt15h34my4u9a9/u87%20failed%20breath%20test.mp3?dl=0So I don't know about giving shannon the benefit of the doubt Johnkenn , now I'm in a tough situation since shannon clearly lied and charged somebody for checking out the mic and did nothing, before I bought it from said seller. What a shame. For those of you still in denial here's a link from the horses mouth I tell you what I'M NOT DOING, and that's sending this to shannon... who do ya'll even send mics to now since shannon clearly is out of the picture. I sent a email to Tom Onofrio, apparently he's got some stellar reviews. Anyone else that could inspect this and either clean the capsule or replace it with a new k87? Feeling bad for the seller too, luckily he's totally understanding and we might work something out...still a bum situation for everyone involved though. What a mess.
I would bet $10k that someone else wrote that. Or maybe he dictated it. Yeah... I’ve never seen him write anything in a complete sentence. One of the reasons I didn’t send a few mics his way were his communication skills - it seemed like he didn’t have the time to actually complete a thought. Then sent me a bill when I never sent anything to him to repair. Whoops! Glad I skated on that one but definitely feel for all of those who are still out their mics and / or money.

I mix the vocal where the artist and I agree it sounds the best and fits the mood of the song and genre. Then print a vocal up and a vocal down and send them all off to mastering. Sometimes my mastering engineer is doing something and she needs to have the vocal a bit louder or quieter, or needs to jump between them for certain sections. I leave that up to her.

We’ve got 3 vintage 87’s that use the screw in method on the bottom. Maybe they are a bit later than the one you have. They definitely all have the battery compartment and little battery check meter on the back. They work with either the 67 style strap mounts or with the bottom screw in mounts.

Hm. Curious. Every RODE mic I've used has been bright tin crap. Maybe these will be better? Whats the price point supposed to be? Same. I’ve never tried a Rode that I immediately didn’t hate or thought was broken.
