if one were to try making a 16 channel console of 500 series units how could one rig in a few effect sends and returns. is there a chassis that has this as a feature?

really enjoyed the video and story. great points in the thread too. especially relate to Cortland. as a 30something dude I try to find the balance between respecting the past, representing my own gen and understanding what the youth are doing.
in the same spirit check out this video of a Serge Gainsbourg session that I go back to often:

I always do a demo. helps ease the tension but often some or most elements from the demo make it to what I consider the final version. lately I record my own 'click' track of just snapping my finger and humming the arrangement. a loose and fun way of getting the ball rolling.

i just got a x-touch compact for super cheap. I had the full size but too many of the buttons didn't work in Reaper. definitely agree that touchscreen just doesn't equal tactile. the faderport looks good but a lack of pan on each channel wouldn't work for me. I love to pan two tracks at a time and allow that real-time separation to guide the amount of panning. I understand it can be done with the faders but I feel that would take from the natural mix feeling I want back since I sold my ssl x-desk. otherwise faderport looks like a good step in the right direction. I feel like ssl could have nailed it on the nucleus but they insist on making it this hybrid analog $5k monster. shame.

had a good time. highlights for me were tweaking the Coil Audio rack, getting the Burl Mothership record and hearing the Highland Dynamics proto type preamp. this thing is pretty sweet. he said no idea on price or availability yet but wanted to show it anyway. there was a stepped gain switch that was low, medium, high, and open. the open position instantly brought a really nice distortion to the lead vocal that was patched to it. also had low and high filters that were killer. UA had a booth set up where you could A/B hardware to plug ins. thought that was neat but didn't partake.

I just watched this video and it gave me a pretty immediate respect for Wade and Chandler Limited... unless I strike gold, a UAD plugin is as probably as close as I'm going to get, haha. Yes! I posted this clip back in the 500 series TG announcement thread. A former member dismissed it as 'a video of Wade talking' haha some folks...

I'm finding that I love the consistency of using the same chain for everything. helps get the gear out of the way of the music. also helps when the quality isn't ever a question. costly but priceless.
that being said my dreams would be something like:
RCA 44 -> RCA OP6 -> UREI 1176 -> Lang PEQ (what I'd like to add some day)
U67s -> Vintage UA610 X2 -> Fairchild 670 -> Klein & Hummel UE-100 (stereo mission impossible)
REDD47 -> RS124 -> EQP1A -> MEQ (what I'm currently using, dreaming that I can keep it all forever)

when I was 17 I had a friend that worked at sam ash. one day he called me and said that a woman brought a list of equipment and keyboards in to sell after her husband past. we had been obsessed with the sound of the fender Rhodes from all the jazz records we were digging up and a Rhodes was on the list. He talked her into selling it to him for $300. I went with him to pick it up. it was a very small home with a large sun room addition on the backside. the sun room was jam packed with keys, records and gear. being 17 in 1999, I didn't know jack about analog gear but I remember seeing a juno, a Hammond, and a clavinet. also being 17 I had zero money to spend but I asked about the records and she said I could have a few for free. I still have the OG mint Bitches Brew that I left with. I always think back and wish something like that would happen today knowing what I know now.

yeah more in the ballpark. I am referring to the whole "mic is the pre/pre is the mic" conundrum. makes it a bit harder to straight away compare. of course, in any event, satisfaction with the sound and the take is all good. I used my Redd all day tracking drums. I am hearing the fatness that my 4038 always gave with the added presence on top that the 4038 never could give. I feel I am hearing the best of both worlds. So far, so great. Can we hear Yeah ill pluck a loop out. Im thinking some of the raw mic, then through curvebender and zener and then with a sip of bricasti. kinda show the progression its doing for me.

honestly if you are looking to compare the mic to others make sure that the other is plugged into a red 47 preamp. otherwise your comparison isn't really comparing much. mmmmmaybe..... or any other old single ended tube preamp. yeah more in the ballpark. admittedly I'm not as fussy as most but I got mine about a week ago and I'm happy with the sound and build. here are my first impressions.
first song I worked on had the redd as a mono overhead. as the only drum mic for the song. using dark cymbals as I normally do and a rogers dynasonic. the rolls I was playing were more clearer than any mic I have used before. I could hear each time the stick hit the head versus a few of my previous mics that turned quick snare rolls/drags into blurs. so right from the start I'm thinking wow this mic is sensitive. the dynasonic is also a sensitive snare so they made a great pair. I had it about 1 foot up from my forehead and a moderate gain level in the cardioid pattern. the hi hat was brighter than I am used to (coming from working with ribbons) but it wasn't annoyingly bright like the mics that made me stick to ribbons to begin with. nice and crispy. the kick cut through with ease sounding like a nicely wrapped ball of thunder. I ran this track into the rs124 with almost no GR and from there through my pultec with a bump at 60hz and 5K and also a cut at 20k to taste. then hit the mid pultec for some additional 200hz. these choices mainly based on the so-so acoustics from my room. put my akg bx10 on aux and brought in some dark tail with most high freq cut off. not gonna use a lot of adjectives but just damn. after using ribbons so long its like hearing a hi-fi version of myself without the thumbs-down high frequencies my mind always associates with condensers. similar to the Zener I can see this mic gaining a notable association with drums. is wade a drummer? serious question if any one knows.
next was the bass. I have a 57 avri p-bass and 59 bassman ltd. the p-bass has the 52 labella flats. this combination is dreamy as hell for me and the sound I go for. I put the redd about 3 feet away from the center of the amp and dialed in a heavy-on-the-mid-range tone. low amp volume but high mic gain. picked away at it until I was satisfied with the performance with little thought towards what the mic was doing. so it was a bit of surprise on playback that the bass was as thick and creamy as it was. it totally filled the room. I honestly didn't even try any science, I just put the mic in place and zoned out. granted the chain is a beautiful thing but the mic captured that mid tone perfectly while not missing any of the ass it was putting out. again, sent that into the rs124 and let that work its bass magic. big bump on pultec 3k to bring out the pick a bit. total mind fuck of a sound. really just sat and listened to that over and over for awhile.
I finished the song with guitar and mellotron (piano & violins) all amped and mic'ed with the redd. it is 100% redd. if this song ever gets anywhere I'll be sure to come back and reference it with audio. I had been using a 4038 with the redd 47 pre but was looking for a change. looking forward to getting some vocalists in soon.
its certainly the most expensive gear I've ever bought since most things I pick up used. even my curve bender I got a smoking deal on. because I already had scored a used redd 47 preamp a few years back I was able to look it at more like trading the pre and adding the mic. after that the sticker shock wasn't as crazy. of course the options for mics are endless and growing every day but I've had some of my biggest revelation using Chandler gear and had great experiences with the support side. I highly recommend.

fantasy chain acquired. well worth the savings and years upon years of trading up. however, my new fantasy is an op-6 with a 44. maybe follow that chain with a 1176 and a lang... ?
this shit never stops, does it?

Ok...he should sue Gregory Scott (Kush) for copping his style. gregory repeatedly admits to being a portishead / morcheeba lover on the kush podcast. its kinda an ongoing joke.

the thread has almost 50k looks. bound to be a bit of drama. I've been reading it since it started and I remember laughing out loud at that page. all in context it was kinda funny. there's a lot of good input regarding the mic in that thread in my opinion. Paul's being some of the most trustworthy given his history and track record for taste in gear. especially for anyone who is realistically considering purchasing the microphone. I like both sites

I sold my redd47 to help fund the mic but then got cold feet and had to flip a few other things to get a redd47 back. file under "gear you recently let go of then instantly felt remorse and reacquired as soon as possible" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So did you get the mic and the pre? decided against the mic and just reacquired the preamp. too attached to my 4038.
