I've had a Soyuz SU-17 for a couple of months now and love it. No buyers remorse and I don't see it going anywhere. My other high end mic for comparison is a Pearlman TM-250. Both great mics and I feel, for my needs, I have my bases pretty well covered. I think the SU-17 is a little smoother than the TM-250 and the TM-250 is a little more rock n roll but both are great. I also have the Soyuz SU-11 matched pair and so far having only used them on acoustics I've been very pleased.

I've tried some of the bass profiles in recording, but so far still prefer going direct into my retro power strip. I have no doubt I could get great bass tones with the Kemper if I spent some time, but I'm not a real bass player anyway so I'm just looking for something quick.

Hey Martin, I know where you are coming from with regards to the hunt for the perfect gear set up and specifically the Soyuz mic. I've kind of been doing the same thing over the past couple of years as I build up my system so everything is bought and paid for as I get closer to being able to walk away from my corporate job and follow my passion. In reading your posts I know how the Soyuz 017 haunts you. I will agree with you that it is the real deal, if it fits your voice. I've now used mine through three different pre amp setups and it sounds great through all of them, retro powerstrip, A designs pacifica, and my newly acquired Redd 47, Rs124 combo. For ballad type music I like the sound of my own voice through the Soyuz better than anything else I've been fortunate enough to use. I also have a Perlman TM-250 with Tim's capsule in it and I really like it for more rockin type vocals. My wife also enjoys getting behind the mic once in a while and with her there is no comparison. With the Soyuz mic she sounds the best I've ever heard her sound. I've got some other people I record occasionally and I'm really looking forward to getting them back in my studio when time permits, but I finally feel like I've gotten off the microphone merry go round now that I have the 017 and TM250. So, back to your original post, after going through what you are going through, I finally feel like now I have the analog gear that meets my needs and will out live me. It doesn't mean there will not be a new shiny object I will lust after, but I now feel confident that the gear I have is up to any capability I will ever have.

Holy crap, these are way cheaper than the ones from Middle Atlantic and look just the same. I feel like Homer Simpson.....DOH!!! Not quite as thick but who cares! Your welcome ! Where were you a year ago when I bought about 10 of the others at 6x the price. As far as my wife knows I could have bought another compressor with what I would have saved.

Martin, the ones I use are the Middle Atlantic vent panels and I get them from Sweetwater. They come in 1 rack space, 2 rack space etc. You can also get them with different size vent holes. Really liking the Chandler gear with the Soyuz Mics. Just did my first vocal take with the SU-017 through the Redd 47, RS124 combo and it is probably one of the best sounding vocal takes I think I've ever done. Take a look at the vent panels from MCM electronics can't beat the price unless you buy in quantity from West Penn! Holy crap, these are way cheaper than the ones from Middle Atlantic and look just the same. I feel like Homer Simpson.....DOH!!!

Sorry to hear that JK, we had the hose come loose on our upstairs washing machine a few years ago after we had just moved into a new house and had to have all our hard wood floors replaced.

Dang Mike, that's kind of my dream team, the Chandler's and the 0-11'S, well done my man! Just noticed something, in your rack there are some really cool looking one rack space black grills with air holes. What are those and where did you get them? I like to leave room between components too, but don't like the look of blank space very much. Martin, the ones I use are the Middle Atlantic vent panels and I get them from Sweetwater. Got my Chandler Redd 47s yesterday and paired them up to the RS124s. This is the first thing I've done with them. A little acoustic thing using a pair of Soyuz SU-011s into the Redd 47s and then into the RS124s summed through the 2Bus+. Not sure why the sound cloud track will not show up and you have to link to sound cloud to play it. Can anyone educate me on what causes that? https%3A//soundcloud.com/user-955487101/dark-sideAttachment Deleted

I also find the Kemper great in a live setting for acoustic and resonator guitar. I just run it analog right into the mixer.

Got my matched pair of RS124s last week and had a blast using them over the weekend. Now trying to figure out what I am going to sell so I can justify the REDD 47s.

When I used Pro Tools the Frontier Design Tranzport was great. Since I've switched to Presonus Studio One, their free Ipad app is even better. Just like have the mixing desk on my ipad.

I am loving the Soyuz SU-011s on acoustic. I know there are probably not many out there yet, but they are pretty nice.

Mediums on my dreadnoughts and lights on my OM style. I really like the Elixir HD lights in phosphor bronze as a good in between.

That vocal take did not do the Soyuz 0-17 justice. It is pitchy and I didn't take the time I should have setting the Retro Powerstrip correctly. While I love the powerstrip for bass DI and for acoustics, I am still working on the gain staging I like for vocals. My Rs124s get delivered today so I hope to have time this weekend to run the 0-17 through the pacifica and Rs124 to see what kind of results I can get.
JK, any Rs124 settings you care to share for tracking vocals?

My wife loves the way her voice sounds with the Soyuz 017 which is really great for me. Now any gear I buy I convince her that it's not really for me it's for her. Hope that works with the matched pair of Chandler RS124s that are being delivered tomorrow.

The Kemper is hard to beat for easy recording. I have a pretty good amp collection, but still resort to the Kemper frequently.

Here is a rough demo of something I'm working on. Used the Soyuz SU-017 for a vocal track and a matched pair of SU-011s on guitar in an XY then panned hard left and right. The chain for the SU-017 was into a Retro Powerstrip with the EQ off and just a touch of gain reduction. The only extra processing on the vocal was a very short echoboy delay. The SU-011s were direct into an A-Designs Pacifica with no added compression and only a high pass at 100Hz. I wanted to keep these tracks as raw as possible to see what the microphones could do with minimal processing. The three tracks were run though the Apollo 16 blackface and then summed through a 2Bus+ with no other processing. So far really happy with the Soyuz mics and I'm sure it will only get better once I get used to them.

Bryce has been great with fantastic customer support. I have one of the very early WA76 compressors that had a meter that was way off and could not be calibrated. Bryce had me send it to him and I had it back in a couple of days. It has been perfect since.

I like the idea of having high end gear that's not so common. I'd probably rather have the Soyuz 0-17 mic and the RS124, than a U-47 Clone and a Sta_Level, but I would have to try both to be certain. That's why I chose the Dizengoff D4 REDD 47 style preamp, just to be a little different. And of course because it was affordable. Martin, your video was one of the reasons I purchased the Soyuz 0-17 mic. That and after getting the 0-11s I knew I had to have it. Now I just need to figure out how to justify the RS124.

Used a 15% off coupon on Tuesday and picked up an A-Designs Pacifica from Front End Audio. Had one years ago and for some reason sold it. Love how easy it is, turn one knob get good sound.
