Here is a rough demo of something I'm working on. Used the Soyuz SU-017 for a vocal track and a matched pair of SU-011s on guitar in an XY then panned hard left and right. The chain for the SU-017 was into a Retro Powerstrip with the EQ off and just a touch of gain reduction. The only extra processing on the vocal was a very short echoboy delay. The SU-011s were direct into an A-Designs Pacifica with no added compression and only a high pass at 100Hz. I wanted to keep these tracks as raw as possible to see what the microphones could do with minimal processing. The three tracks were run though the Apollo 16 blackface and then summed through a 2Bus+ with no other processing. So far really happy with the Soyuz mics and I'm sure it will only get better once I get used to them.

Sounds really good from my phone speakers. You need to fix the soundcloud link.

I only had time to listen to 1/4 of the tracks tonight. It sounds great Mike. The 0-11's may be even more exciting than the 0-17. I have a pair of KM-84's here on loan, and I love them, but I swear, if you offered me a choice of either the KM-84 or The Soyuz 0-11. I'd take the 0-11, honestly.
Mike, maybe try bringing the vocal up a little further in the mix next time?
Congratulations! That's kind of my dream team you have. The Soyuz 0-17, 0-11's, new Apollo, 2 bus, yeah baby!

That vocal take did not do the Soyuz 0-17 justice. It is pitchy and I didn't take the time I should have setting the Retro Powerstrip correctly. While I love the powerstrip for bass DI and for acoustics, I am still working on the gain staging I like for vocals. My Rs124s get delivered today so I hope to have time this weekend to run the 0-17 through the pacifica and Rs124 to see what kind of results I can get.
JK, any Rs124 settings you care to share for tracking vocals?

Wow, I'm really looking forward to hearing the results of that Mike.

Agree I like the acoustic guitar tracks a lot. The vox is a little sleepy, could be the preamp ?

The vox was due to rushed/poor setup by the recording engineer....me.

Yea.. the vocal is not alive like the acoustic... maybe it needed a little more gain on the preamp to make it more exciting

So, the Soyuz 0-17 is supposed to be a U67? Or something else?

As far as I know, the 0-17's capsule is in the general U67 style, but that's it. All parts are hand made by Soyuz and all the designs are proprietary, not a copy of anything.

[br Yeah my understanding is that it falls into the K67/870 family in the general sense because it requires an EQ circuit for flat output, otherwise it's pretty much it's it own design. It would be nice if we gave designers and manufacturers more freedom to get away from fiting in the M7, k49, k67 and CK12 boxes. I do love the classics but I'd love to see somebody come up with the next generation of classic LDC Capsules as well!

i kind of think Soyuz has in fact done just that Eric, except it's not just the capsule that's next gen, but the whole thing. the 0-17 really doesn't sound like a clone, it has its own sound and vibe.
That said, when it comes to recording a human voice in a manner that's pleasing enough to listen to over an over again, i doubt any design can deviate all that much from the established ones. Could Sinatra have sounded "better". or The Beatles? Listening to Chris Isaac's vocal tone using a vintage U-47, or Lyle Lovette on a mint U-67 orTom Petty on an Elam 251, I think any possible improvement would be incremental, but definitely desirable.
What would really be fun is if all the current technology and economies of scale managed to make something truly equal to mics like the U87 or C12 at $600. Some companies have come close, but they're still not quite there. The new Aantone CV95 is a good attempt at this. It's similar to the Soundeluxe 195, but with a tube. With a little tweaking it can get damn close to a Neumann, but still.. '.
