I was only referring to the sennheiser hd 650's. In my earlier post. No experience with anything else.
Sonarworks. I like it with the cans as it makes them a bit flatter in response. I don't use the speaker modeling just the eq curve to make them more linear I don't use sonarworks with my speakers ever.

Sennheiser HD650 - Really great set of phones. Open back. I have a set of AKG Q701, which are also pretty great, but these are totally different. Rounder top and thicker in the midrange than the AKG's. Really handy to have a couple different pairs of high end headphones. Just read this. I love the hd650's. And with the sonarworks software they really kill

The fragility and impermanence of the digital medium rears it's head once again.

I like it. Works in 88.2 on logic. Highs aren't harsh at all. Lows are nice. I like the drive too. Sounds really usable. Worked well on some electric guitars in a mix I did today. I've been using the rs56, Scheps 1073, and q2 mostly. The sie-q may get quite a bit of use in the future here.

Also, I'm gonna get philosophical...
A lot of today's famous professionals grew up on analog and learned how to make that sound really good. Compensating for natural hf roll off enjoying natural tape compression etc. then digital got thrown in and it's the inverse in a lot of ways to analog.
Today people use both. Some of those people started on digital then got into analog and some haven't used analog systems at all.
Tool selection and mix techniques seem to work for one world or the other. There are different pitfalls to each set of tools.
This can make things quite confusing. Now there are two very different worlds in audio.
it seems to me that eventually when digital has been around so long that many people have only used that platform they will instinctually know how to make it sound wonderful and will be able to make amazing sounding records. People already do itb.
I guess what I'm getting at is that the present time is the most confusing time to learn this skill of engineering/mixing because the two worlds are colliding and all the dust hasn't settled yet. I don't really see it settling quickly either with everyone doing emulations and trying to make a square fit into a triangle. Maybe we should develop new technology instead of emulating old tech. Nostalgia definitely sells and feels safe though.
I'm no writer but...

I don't know what was going on in my brain last night. I was thinking LP as I was writing HP. Typical cowboy brain fart. Sorry guys. And arguing my stupidity to boot!! LOL It can be as confusing as fiction and non-fiction. When I see non-fiction my brain reads not-real instead of not-not real. Maybe if I read fiction as 'made up' instead of 'not real' it wouldn't be so confusing. Don't worry about it.... We knew what you meant. That's what a sabbatical will do to ya haha

Has anyone used an 8816 and a chandler mini mixer? I have the mini mixer and I'm curious as to the differences in sound. The 8816 has more functionality for sure but it's not just about that for me. I'm sure I should demo one and hear for myself yada yada, but before I do I wanted to hear what you all had to say. Thanks!

I'm really wishing you the best. People can be horrible. That was really uncalled for. The older I get the less I expect from the general public and the more I appreciate common decency.
I know how I feel about the dogs I've had in my life. You absolutely did not take it a step too far. Don't let people get you down.
And you know, there are always other puppies for your daughter and family if worse comes to worst. My heart really goes out to you right now.

Drums have become my favorite instrument to record. Funny, drums used to really intimidate me, now I just have a healthy respect for them. In my experience, learning to mic drums well has been a process of unlearning the knee jerk reaction of doing what I think I'm supposed to do. Instead, trying to come to decisions by asking myself, every step of the way, how exactly is this going to get me closer to the sound in my head and why is it going to work. If my answer to 'why' is 'because I saw someone else do it' then I need analyze the situation more. Draw on what I know about my room, what I know about behavior of sound waves, past experiences etc. Above all, take an extra minute and really listen. change mic placement as many times as I need to until I have proved to myself this is the best way for me to get to where I want to be. If I really begin to understand why, then it is repeatable. I've found time spent here is time saved in mixing so it balances itself out In the end. Not to mention it sounds better than forcing it afterwards.
If I want to mimic someone's sound, I better try and understand their thought process as best I can. That approach should get me closer than looking at pictures of where they put a mic. Understanding why they did it, not where it ended up. Mimicking placement hasn't worked out for me very well in the past. It took me to a point then turned around and spit in my face. I really enjoy albinis drum sounds. Dude is a maniac. And that video above of him lecturing is great! I'd go to the school of albini any day of the week... I have a long long long way to go myself. I'm not trying to school anyone, just sharing my experience.

If anything, the Amphion Amp is bass heavy. Yielded mixes that were anorexic for me. I'm now using a cheap class A/B amp and getting great results. Love my One 18's and this amp with them. This makes me think our rooms are playing the bigger role in our experiences. Seems highly likely to me.

Hey guys. Sorry if this is answered somewhere already. Can someone offer a concise explanation of the differences between the Capi heider and the Capi 312? I read the explanations on the Capi site and the custom analogue services site. Still a bit foggy...

I've long lusted for one. From clips, they just seem to really fatten up and situate a vocal track so nicely. They do, I really enjoy mine. Stupid easy to use but still has a few options. Similar in this regard to the cl1a in my mind. I'll never get rid of my sta level. Doesn't mean I don't want a 176, Rs124, ba6a, SHMC, la2a, am660, the overstayer stuff and on and on. All of which would be contenders for the OP i'd imagine.. I'd love to hear the bg2 and locomotive. God, I need help.
