Really intrigued by the SU-013 and have seen this mentioned in a few places.
Anyone with hands on care to comment?
That’s one negative, I would say. Seems like there’s a high noise floor. I suppose. It's rated at 16db self noise. For reference, a km84 is rated at 17db self noise. My Miktek c5 is 17db, and if I recall my Charter Oak m900s are 16db. So on par with several other SDCs. They are generally noisier. Though there some really quiet ones out there. However noise floor isn't everything...

Hell, maybe I'm just imagining it...Seems like I've noticed the noise floor on it before.

That’s one negative, I would say. Seems like there’s a high noise floor. But Mine has also hit the floor about five times because of the damn clip. Need to tape it in. that really is a drag... I haven’t had that problem with mine, and they are hanging over a drum kit... I wonder if they fixed the clips on newer ones.

Will yours drop out if they get a small whack? Mine will.

That would also isolate it in case your noise situation is being exacerbated by mechanical coupling.

timcampbell Shannon or mdmitch2 should weight in here on how shocks to a microphone, are shocks to the capsule which can cause all sorts of pain . . . the least of which is momentary interruptions of signal transmission.

There's a good isolation mount that Audio Technica makes called the AT8471, I've got a couple here.
The Oktava MK 012 clips seem to work fine also.

Beyer mc930's are 16db also and it's never been an issue for me with those.
Yeah the clips look pretty basic. The Shure a53m's I've got might not fit but I bet the clips that came with the 930's would, they won't slip out of those.

It sort of had me thinking, not all inherent equipment noise can be the same, correct? So 16db of noise that is shaped a little differently might be more perceptible in one piece of equipment than another, correct? And if the S/N ratio in the high frequencies isn't as good, then boosting those highs could make it noisier in the end I suppose.

A total vanity question here, sonics aside.
I've always thought Soyuz mics generally looked pretty elegant. I see the 013 comes in black as well. Anybody get the black ones?

I've wondered what the black ones look like in person. My cream-and-brass Soyuz mics always make me think they might have belonged to one of the Romanovs or something.

Some of the Soyuz 013 through Jeff's CAPI VP28.
I apologize for waning chops. That I probably never had...

I apologize for waning chops. That I probably never had... Geez. That was incredibly rich to my ears (not in my studio, but on some decent monitors in the family room). Instruments sounded like they were in the room with me. (LCR panning was a treat). Oh, and... Great playing too!

I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow a couple of 013 FETs from the local dealer last week. My main reason for checking them out, was the Youtube clip at the top of this thread, where they were used as tom mics. The bleed sound was surprisingly nice, so I wanted to test them myself.
The night before I borrowed the 013s, I tested my usual tom mics(421s) against a pair of Line Audio Design CM3s. The difference in the bleed was astounding. It was way more useable in the CM3s than the 421s. It made me doubt if I even needed to test anything else. But given the opportunity, I went for it. Also, a neighbouring studio had a pair of Beyerdynamics MC930s, so we were able to test both them and the CM3s against the 013s. After having recorded all 3 pairs, it immediately became clear that the 013s were heads above the others. By far. These are really great tom mics. I almost always gate the toms, as the bleed ruins the overall sound. With the 013s I could leave them off.
I haven't covered the sound of the actual toms so far, but that was also a huge step up. Great bottom end, nice top, no harshness at all.
I only had them for 1 day, and as I had a day-long session, I was not able to test them out in other applications. But I know they're great OHs, and I cannot imagine they suck on acoustic guitar, etc. either.
My bank account is crying. There's no way I can NOT get 3 for tom duty now.
(I do concur when it comes to the clips, though. They are flimsy.)

I apologize for waning chops. That I probably never had... Really nice. It occurs to me that most of the SDC I like have good low end, and minimal top end spike.
