The last thing I need to sort out at some point is a flagship mic, I love the 67.. I spout continuously about it but on my voice it's not the best mic I've ever heard, that would be the Tele ELA M 251E. On my acoustics and my voice nothing comes close, I have an ISK 2B which is a CK-12 style clone and it's good (or great even) but it's not an ELAM.
Shall I save, cry, sell your kidney's whilst you're not looking? Or is there something else that has the same magic out there? No rush on this (I'm broke because of my studio re-fit) so keep on suggesting. Because even the clones are expensive let me know what you like / dislike, any audio examples / references etc. would be very handy and awesome too.
On a side note I do get along with 269C style mic's or any sort of modern hyper realistic take on the 67, that's why the Soundelux U99 is also on my radar. Unfortunately I couldn't get in touch with them, get a demo through pro audio shops, nothing..

Korby KAT with 67m head is the best modded/extended top end 67 style mic I've used. You can find them on reverb occasionally in the 1,200-1,800 range. Come to think of it, the Korby 251 head is pretty great too so you may be able to get everything you're looking for in that one system. The only downside is they aren't made/supported anymore but if you know a good tech, you'll be fine. Also, I really look forward to the 251 Heiserman is working on, I bet it's great! Another M269 option is the RMS 269. I haven't used it, but have heard good things about the company overall!

I really dig my Beezneez U87 clone. It does 95% of the U87 thing without the U87 price. I'm not sure I'd call it a flagship mic on it's own, but it sits really nice in the mix without a ton of EQ so for me it's getting used a lot for vocals.

You could wait and checkout the new heiserman 251 which is supposedly out this year. I also have a 251 itch. I had an adk251 which I ended up selling, I found it a little too vanilla for my taste. But the heiserman sounds like it’s gonna be the real deal.

You could have Chris at Barbaric Amplification build you one. Could use a Tim Campbell, Heiserman, Beesneez, Maiku, or even vintage capsule if you can find one.

If you can wait, the Heiserman 251 may be the best of all. Meanwhile, the Upton 251 with a ge 5 star in it or a Soundelux 251 (preferably about serial number 100-200 with the 6072 slot) are wonderful. The Upton is a little more natural. The Soundelux is very very euphonic and has low end for days which can be really good depending what you want.
Some people love the tele 251. But I did a test between the Soundelux and the Tele (which costs more), and I could find nothing about the Tele that I liked better than the Soundelux. And even though I do not have them at the same time, I would bet that the Upton is better than the Tele as well - especially because you can communicate with Dallas and let him know what you want. (And I assume if you got a Soundelux you could also communicate with David Bock for some adjustments.)

I'd look for a vintage U87. When they're right, they're hard to beat.

I'd look for a vintage U87. When they're right, they're hard to beat. I am very happy with the Stam 87 - Mkiii - the latest. But it cannot do what the Upton 251 or the Soundelux 251 can do. However it may be more versatile. And if one only has one super mic, then versatility is important.

I'm sure that Heiserman will be fantastic too...though, it's going to price in closer to a Wunder mic than the Upton...and I think development has really slowed to a crawl because of the craziness the last two years.

Neumann U77 if you can find one but good luck. If a Neumann U67 and a Microtech Gefell UM70 had a love child it would be the U77.

Build your own! Ha! That's what I did, I call her Claire.
I have a pair of "67-ish" DIY's as well.

First the Korby 251 and 67 heads are amazing, but you have no support. Convertibles offer the versatility but the compromise is all the sound is in the capsule. What this means is the amp section is useally pretty neutral, so let’s say I put one of Tims CK12’s in a Korby head, it’s going to sound good but the tweaked Korby is going to have more 251 flavor. That said, I would still take a look at a Lawson. The Upton and Heisermann would probably be 2 of my first looks along with Bock.

Now that is one nice mic! That Josephson capsule would be seductive as hell.

I second the Upton + Mullard combo. Hands down the best mic I’ve had the pleasure of owning thus far and absolutely nails the 251 vibe. For me, it’d be hard to justify the T-funk knowing how awesome this sounds for half the cost. If it’s a 251 you’re after, you definitely have to give the Upton a shot.

Have we got any clips of the Upton? Hate to say it but the mic to beat on my voice is the ISK 2B Gen 2, I've had plenty of Neumann's including a U87, M149, 47FET and I've still got a U67. At least at this point I've heard enough mic's to know exactly what I want from it but I wanna make sure with a mic this pricey it ain't just nostalgia. You might think I'm nuts with the ISK but no mic has come close thus far for my use. Not even the U67..
However I like modern sounding "smooth" mic's which I know quite a few aren't a fan of, I actually don't mind the C800G (when it's tamed with a 2A).. PITA to use like but a great mic on my voice at least. Got the WA-8000 version for backing vox..
Reason I'm looking mainly is because of a shift in genre's, y'know the one's where dynamics, bass etc. are actually welcome.
Edit: Tell you what, if I can get my studio together in the next couple of weeks I'll record the ISK.. Probably a better idea. Also I DL'd Johnkenn's comparisons, it was between the Upton and the one called Steiger for me.

When i went through my search for a 251 there were a lot of good mics i bought. From Stellar CM range to Miktek cv4, Beesneez tribute series, couple of Bock’s including u99 and Bock 251, the there was ADK custom 251, SAE 251, Dany Bouchard custom 251, Oliver Archut 251, BSA Blackspade 251 and a fewmore i have forgotten along the way. They were all good mics. The Reason i have settled at this point with the Upton is that it has most of the things i am looking for. No mic will be perfect for everyone, so if you really like your ISK then just keep on using it. You say you are looking for an Elam but are really liking the c800 with 2A. Maybe an Elam is not for you or maybe a Bock 251 is for you. The Bock 251 is a modern sounding mic. It has a massive low end and great top end. Hughe smiley face sound. That transformer he uses imparts a lot of low end. The 2 x Bock 251’s i used the own sounded very consistent with each other. The Upton is definitely not trying to sound modern. Not sure this is the one for you.

I think that if it's just for you and you know you love the Tfunk 251E ( and I can understand that because the only time I got to use one my jaw dropped) I would do everything I can to get that mic even if it means selling some stuff.
If you were running a commercial studio, I probably would say the opposite as having variety to fit different genres and singers is important.
I find that when recording my own music, I fall prey to analysis paralysis where I overthink every step, which doesn't happen to me when recording other people, so not having many mics and options is actually a boost to my creativity and workflow.

Has anyone tried the tele TF-251? Might be a more modern voiced option for around 2k.

Dave Wheeler can give you total support on the Korby, he’s very familiar with them.
