However I like modern sounding "smooth" mic's which I know quite a few aren't a fan of, I actually don't mind the C800G Has anyone mentioned the Chandler REDD? (Or used Sony or Brauner.) For new & ready to buy: Upton, Josephson (716/725) or Manley (Gold/Black)

Manley is something I'm defo going to look into, tons of parts, many retailers, easy to buy / demo.. I think that's 75% of my decision, if I lived in the US I'd just road trip to anyone willing to let me try there's. Bar prosumer or Euro brands (even then it's a bit iffy) there's rarely any way to test stuff, I'm not going to risk that with a $5K+ mic and it needs to be in my hands for a week or two. I can get Gefell mic's any time I want, even know the disti / Gefell person (John Willet?) who's a super cool person (got an M930 from them before I believe?). There's another option, I wasn't keen on the M930 but that means nothing really. Gefell make a lot of mic's and I'm sure there's something I'd really like.

When i went through my search for a 251 there were a lot of good mics i bought. From Stellar CM range to Miktek cv4, Beesneez tribute series, couple of Bock’s including u99 and Bock 251, the there was ADK custom 251, SAE 251, Dany Bouchard custom 251, Oliver Archut 251, BSA Blackspade 251 and a fewmore i have forgotten along the way. They were all good mics. The Reason i have settled at this point with the Upton is that it has most of the things i am looking for. No mic will be perfect for everyone, so if you really like your ISK then just keep on using it. You say you are looking for an Elam but are really liking the c800 with 2A. Maybe an Elam is not for you or maybe a Bock 251 is for you. The Bock 251 is a modern sounding mic. It has a massive low end and great top end. Hughe smiley face sound. That transformer he uses imparts a lot of low end. The 2 x Bock 251’s i used the own sounded very consistent with each other. The Upton is definitely not trying to sound modern. Not sure this is the one for you. Yeah what most love about the U87 is what doesn't work for me, they can come across quite nasally on my voice and mid forward wouldn't work. It has been 15 years since I've had an ELA M, when finances got tough it had to go unfortunately. From what I remember of it the mic works in that octave above the 47 range and that's where my voice sits (around that area). I suit clearer mic's as well, in the example below that ELA M just runs away with it IMO and reminds me why I liked it so much. I heard the Upton clips from John and on reflection I think the ELAM is more my sorta thing. That's very unfortunate when you consider the price. But most things with a K67 or / CK-12 seems to works well on my voice, U67, RMS269, Sony C800 etc. yeah I know the frequency responses are different but they just seem to for one reason or another. It's trying to find the best example of that.. I'd have bought the Stam version of the 800 and been done with it but I'd like to actually record this year so I got the Warm. If memory serves the 251 also worked well on acoustic and piano.

I forgot about the Chandler REDD, but Aremos' post just reminded me. Now THAT is a truly great mic. It's absolutely in the same class as a vintage U47, Elam 251, U67, etc.. It's the most transparent mic I've ever used. I think it's partly due to the built in preamp. Given the choice of any mic being made today, I'd take the Chandler. Neumann's U67 reissue is a superb mic, but so is my Stam SA67, and it's 4.5G's less expensive.

Gefell M92.1 or UM92.1 are great microphones, especially if the price is right where you live. I don’t think you’d be disappointed in either. The UM900 has a bit more air but the shape is pretty strange. I kind of avoid purchasing microphones like that because musicians (singers in particular) get weirded out by stuff I like that in my experience

The Gefell M92.1S is $3300.00 here after currency conversion but that includes taxes and shipping. I'll probably end up getting 5 - 10% off that as well due to some large bulk orders putting me in a preferential zone.. Something like that I could get later on this year without it being too much of a stretch, same goes for the Soundelux U99 which is very similar price wise.
The Tele would take a few years, I could slap it on a CC at any point but there's bigger fish to fry than a microphone like house renovations, cars etc.

Apparently BSA can make you a good Elam for around $3k but I've never heard one but numerous people have recommended them to me.

We’re hoping to have our version of the 251 ready in the next couple months. We have virtually everything ready….just working out a few odds and ends.

There's no rush so budget isn't an issue (I already have a mic that I really like), I'll save up if need be. I think I'm asking whether there's cheaper and better options or if there's nothing but the Tele to consider. Everyone has been a great help thus far so thank you.. Next up I'll see what I can actually get my hands on, test them for a bit / compare and settle on one of them. Due to supply chain issues I don't believe my studio will be ready in the next two months.. I have no ETA on the API 5500's, the Chandler Opto and Heritage chassis have been delayed. The retailer might have received the former but they're waiting to send everything out in bulk. I'm half way through putting spotlights in the room, none of the treatment has been mounted yet and I'm still waiting for some additional brackets from GIK. Then I actually have to practice, learn instruments again, remember how to record a song and mix / master.. When I said on another thread I'm starting from scratch, I meant it.. I've not recorded any of my own music in about 15 years.

I heard the Heiserman 251 in a shoot out with OG and Re issue. It was/is outstanding. If I had the money that’s where I’d spend it.

Considering your style and taste in music, I can't more strongly recommend getting in the queue for a Heiserman H47 tube with that K47 capsule. I'm on the list for the ELA H251 but I already have the H47T. I think I would sell my U67 before I would part with the Heiserman. It is just that excellent.

I'm on the list for the ELA H251 but I already have the H47T. I think I would sell my U67 before I would part with the Heiserman. It is just that excellent. The Heisermann 251 maybe, 47's or dark(er) sounding mic's just don't work on my voice and dynamic's are a major struggle. The irony is in the past I wanted to be a heavy rock / metal singer but I'm aptly suited to pop music (which I never really liked ). Oh how I struggled, years later I managed to get a bit of grit in my voice but the wrong mic will just strip it in a second. Also anything mid forward is a no-no.. There's something in my voice that can make a mic like that sound ugly.. I think Muse is about the limit of my gritty technical ability.. Anyway, clean, natural, neutral(ish) and accurate with a bit of sweetness works best with me, that's probably why I'm not a massive fan of Neumann's on my voice besides the TLM170. Although I've sang through SDC's to good effect, the Schoep's MK4 sounds better on my voice than a 67 plus the 251, Sony C-800G and modern "hi-fi" takes on the 67 work well.. That's the dilemma I was trying to solve and one of the main reasons I quit. I don't wanna be just mediocre and in rock / metal that's all I'd ever be. Fortunately I'm over it, I hardly if ever listen to rock / metal bar a few classics.

Tangential question: what’s the “official” term for the opposite of mid-forward? Especially when referring to mics.

Quick update, this'll be a long standing thread as there's no real rush here. I've sourced a Tele ELAM at a rental shop and the next time I get some time off the plan is to put it up against my ISK 2B GEN 2 (another 251 style(ish) mic) and I'll post some clips. From the demo's I've heard thus far I'll be frank, it could go either way..

Tangential question: what’s the “official” term for the opposite of mid-forward? "official" term? I usually use "young", in contrast to my being "mid forward" now. Chris
