plinker got me thinking! My pal in town Andy built a little outhouse on his property... think he said the whole construction cost him like $2,000 or something like that. Just sell one or two pieces of your high end gear and you can finance a DIY build like this. Check it out, Giraffe Studios, the guy is a busy engineer working full time: www.facebook.com/giraffestudio That's my dream, but $2K seems real low even if that's just materials. Wood has been going up up up in price. Layout a nice rectangular building, frame it with metal framing (super cheap and easy to work with), then use cheap siding and thick sheet-rock with rock-wool stuffed inside. You'd probably need the timbre only for the roof and forget the windows, until later.
...I don't really know these things. If you're handy, you're dandy!

That's awful, Jesse. We all know how much effort you've put into your space, and how it was a good fit to begin with. Seems this issue has impacted so many studios over the last 20 years or so. Owning your space is the only insurance, besides being a good asset at the end of your recording career.
Good luck, may you land on your feet.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Jesse. I have a couple of suggestions. First talk to the older musicians in town about studios that maybe were less known. My buddy in NC found an amazing space that was built out, but wasn't being used as a studio any longer. It saved him a ton of time and money when he discovered that space. There might be something like that hiding in your area.
As to building on your mother's land, one of those prefab steel buildings might be a perfect starting point for getting a structure up FAST. They advertise on late night TV, and seem to have regular special pricing. A concrete pad, and power run, and then you can build out the interior to your needs. Some of those are big enough for a semi tractor, or small aircraft.
Good Luck!!!

A friend does a bunch of producing and recording with 80’s hair bands (and the bands they’ve signed to produce) here in LA and he told me Rikki Rocket of Poison used 2 bigger pre-fab/tuff shed buildings in his backyard. He obviously acoustically treated and beefed them up but one for control room, one for recording with a buried pipe full of cables between - worked really well. Good luck!

Ugh, I know this feeling. I built a metal bldg on my parent’s land after getting bumped by two landlords in a row. Good luck.

I’m gutted for you.
I’m also more than sure you’ll find a solution, land on your feet and hit the ground running.
Also if you need a room cheap to finish out any projects hit me with a pm. If you can make it to north NJ I can hook you up.

Thanks all. Honestly, the only reason I had the space to begin with is because a studio moved out, the place was fully built out, and the rent was dirt cheap. It was a miracle when I found the place and I immediately jumped on it.
The problem now is that I've been spoiled for the past 4 years. I had a 15x15 control room, 20x30 live room, 3 amp closets, and a vocal booth, plus lounge area. The shell of the space was ~2300 Sq ft and often was just a little smaller than I would have liked.
The positive is that I've gaimed a lot of experience and really have an idea of what I'm looking for in a space. It's knowledge that I wouldn't have had without the experience. If it works out that I can actually build something, I at least know what I want.
I've also build some great relationships with artists. Almost everyone that has been in came back, some multiple times, and the ones that didn't, shouldn't have been spending money on studio time anyway. 😂😂
I'm just so sad about the amount of time, effort, and hours that I've put in, only to have the rug pulled out from under me. It's really hard to swallow.
Local friends, I'm hoping to have an end of studio party in the empty space the last weekend of Feb if you guys want to come through. Maybe get a band in to play some tunes while having some drinks.

Hopefully, I can at least make it down some time to meet up for a drink and check out your spot. Looks amazing.

Thanks man. I remember seeing a video with (I think) James Taylor, who built a shipping crate studio. I also had a couple people suggest a bus or RV to do a mobile thing. My problem is that I'm a drummer and play on a lot of my clients tracks. Big part of my draw is that I had a great drum room with a kit set up, mic'd, and ready to go, either with their player or myself playing. Makes it easy to get sounds going and get things done quickly. Without a great drum space, I'm sunk.

That's one way to get some great iso between the control room and iso. Could be an option.

I saw on FB that they were closing up, reached out to the landlord, and grabbed it up. I've been thinking about those metal buildings. My ex father in law bought one of those a bunch of years back and I helped him put it together. I'm not sure how much saving that would be because I'd still have to do a fully isolated build inside (for noise and heat). Not sure how that would work out.

That's terrible news, really sorry to hear it your studio has been an inspiration. Probably to a lot of people, not just me. I'm struggling to find something positive to say, other than you're so tenacious maybe you'll find another way to keep going. Appreciate it brother. Glad to have you as a friend.

I'm sorry Jesse. That's just a terrible situation for you. I got the boot from my space in 2020 and have been working to find something I can handle ever since. The closest I've come is trying to convince a friend to let me share her space. We're not there yet, but I might be in there this year. I'm recording people remotely at the moment. Total bummer man. I hope you can work something out. Where are you located?

Man, I'm so sorry to hear this. Hope you can keep that positive energy of yours at the fore. It's served you well thus far. Thanks man. Need a home for the sexy 5088 too! Right now it looks like it's gonna be sitting in my partners living room for him to mix on! 😂😂

Sorry to hear that man. I really wish you luck finding a good space. Perhaps there’s a local realtor who can help? Thanks man. I've checked in with a couple, but prices I'm seeing are WAY too high to make the BUSINESS work. Once I'm back though, I'll be looking to get some IAA Preamp/V2 eq modules for the 5088. 😍😍 I bet srb would be interested in a couple too!
