I've got a load of these things I've scavenged out of old ADM gear. I'm going to keep some for my 12 channel ADM console (more of a sidecar at this point) in case I ever need them for parts...
But, I've got a ton of these things left over from distribution amp cards that I pulled out of a tv studio that were going to the scrap yard.
Would these be cool to use for a DI or to make some reamp boxes or something of the like?
Anybody ever mess with them before?
They all have the utc 0-17 magnetic shield around them, if that helps description wise.
Can't seem to find much online except dead links.
Thanks in advance!

Only somewhat related, when I got my Barefoot monitors I was super stoked on the MEME switching technology. I figured I’d be able to lose my other monitors and just use them by switching between the settings.
I LOVE the monitors, but that MEME stuff is totally useless for me, I wound up unplugging the switch and just putting it back in the case after a month or so.
I could see myself feeling the same way with Steven’s headphone system. I’m good with my Beyers and Sonarworks has made them translate beautifully.
I’d give them a shot if a friend had a pair though...

Wife and I do 2 dry months every year. It’s usually a moving target for when it will be, but we make it happen.

I’ve whittled down my wavs usage to only the RennAx. That plugin is pretty magical, but when I do my next computer update I won’t be installing any of their plugs. I’ll be happy to rid myself of that company.

I love mine for the music I work on and listen to for enjoyment. My buddy came over and played some heavy modern rock on them and we didn’t last for more than 15 mins. The mids were just too much.
Still very pleased and haven’t heard anything else in the price range that comes even close in terms of sonics or frequency range without having to use a sub (I HATE subs).
Only complaint would be they really showed me how bad the acoustics were in my home work space. Hopefully building a new full on studio space soon and will get that sorted from the ground up!

So, hip me to this...
I buy a band spanky new API, SSL, (insert brand here) console. Comes with a patchbay. Since I blew my wad on the console I have no outboard mic pres - you know, the way studios used to be. The manufacturer comes out to do the install in my room. I say... sorry fellas, it seems you’ve designed your console incorrectly. Can you take this back and send me one that doesn’t have phantom power on the mic preamps?. And while you’re at it remove the tt bays with the mic inputs and jank together an xlr panel that takes up 4 times as much room?
Is this what we’re suggesting here?

John’s probably taking about a Cinch Jones connector.
No excuse for the taking down to folks though, especially if he’s not going to be specific. Not sure if that was intended or if I’m reading too much into it. Whatever.

Cinch is the EU Term I think...
those are RCA phono connectors. Cinch connectors are something quite different and not like to be encountered at your level. Yikes man... that’s a weird flex

So the only risk occurs while the jack is being inserted into the socket then, right? There's no problem passing phantom power through the patchbay once the jack is in? Sorry, just want to make sure I'm reading correctly. Correct - it’s perfectly fine to run phantom through the bay. And for the most part, if your gear and mics are all pin 2 hot - which they SHOULD be, and if not you should remedy that, the transformer in the ribbon mic will block any dc from passing through to the ribbon element. So - phantom will not hurt a ribbon mic (if everything is wired up professionally and properly) First thing I do when I walk into a room I’ve not used before is check phase of outboard gear to make sure I’m good. Running tone out of the console and into every piece of gear can seem like a pain in the ass... but boy is it worth it in the long run (also make assistants check all cables to make sure they are wired properly)

Had no idea so many ppl were patching mics directly into their patchbays. I thought that was strictly verboten. Wow! Since when? Every studio I've worked it has wall plates in the studio and those just come up on the patch bays. Either normaled or half normalled to the console and you can patch to any out board preamp you like. Pretty standard protocol I think. I’ve literally never walked into a studio that didn’t have the wall panel xlr go right into the patchbay normalled to the console mic preamps. This discussion always confuses me.

Isn’t this the reason we use a patchbay? They are to easily change and integrate all of the gear in your studio with minimal fuss.
In big rooms, the situation is usually: -mic in live room or booth > 20’ cable > wall panel > at least 50’ snake > patchbay > another 30’ of cable to get to the preamp > 30’ cable to get back to patchbay > 30’ cable to get to compressor > 30’ cable back to patchbay > 30’ cable to converter.
That’s a lot of patches and that’s just with a preamp and compressor. Some folks go further and throw another patch with an eq in there or line amps like you’re saying. It’s really not that big of a deal. Yes somebody will come here and say that the sound is degraded and you can’t patch phantom through the bay... but it’s been done for what 60+ years in almost every professional studio in the world.

I’d say my monitoring situation. So really three things but they count as one.
-Barefoot 01’s -Dangerous Dbox+ (conversion is awesome and I can control every function from my phone or an iPad which is awesome) -Sonarworks

Is there a layman’s terms idea for what all the opamps sound like? I’ve got red dots in my vp28’s and love them. But... what would I gain from switching it up to something else? Hope I’m not beating a dead horse here.

But yes, it’s a Rye and I agree I tend to like Ryes when making drinks and Bourbons when drinking neat. This one, though, is pretty sweet...wouldn’t mix this with anything because it would probably be too sweet. Isn’t Pappy wheated? Pappy, Weller, and Old Fitz are the main wheated ones.

Let's start a thread showing some of the stuff over at the swamp that really makes our eyes roll back in our heads. Ward - if that gets you worked up, I'd suggest not visiting. Or maybe hit up some surfing or dirt bike forums. You'll have a WAY fresh perspective when you return to audio forum life. Wow, that brings back memories Bill. Some of those dirt bike forums were unreal back in the day. Any chance you remember freshdirt? Man all sorts of nut jobs and lawsuits were flying around back then in the community. I’m cringing just thinking about it!

Never had Pappy...I’ve heard some say it’s fantastic and some say it’s overrated. Been drinking a bottle of Woodford Double Oaked that’s really good. Love Angels Envy, Jefferson and Weller of course, but there’s nothing wrong with a $25 bottle of Bulliet or Rittenhouse. Weller and Pappy are the same recipe. They are all stored in the same areas of the Rick houses - you can see em all lined up if you go for a tour (highly recommend). Anyway, the head taster fella basically tastes the barrels and decides which is gonna have what label. The Weller is a great value if you can find it. Hard to get around here for a reasonable price. For the Bourbon folks, check out the whisky row stuff that Old Forrester is putting out. The “1910” is absolutely out of this world good. I’d take it over a Pappy to be honest and it’s readily available, around here at least.

I'll do that soon for the class! 1073 pre.s ok with everyone? I'll put two KM84s and two KMS84s with screen removed as closeless as possible mic'ing a D28 playing something simple, strumming with a light pick and some basic fingerstyle stuff. And centered, 14" away above, aimed down at the neck join. Ok? P.S. Excellent KM84 sound here: Man those two have been blending together for so long they’d sound good in front of anything. But yeah that does sound good! Haha

Accidentally found a KMS84i on eBay. - which is a KM84i with a windscreen on top of it for handheld vocal use. That comes off, and there it is: A good as new KM84 for $700-odd!! Bought and shipped about 15 minutes ago. I always wondered if they sounded the same - have you done any shootouts of it with an 84?

Grabbed an ADL-1500 locally. Probably needs to be sent in for service...but then I think maybe I should have Jim Williams modify it instead I’d send it to Jim! We had an ADL1000 for a bit at the studio. I don’t know how people compared that thing to an LA2a, cause it sounded absolutely nothing like one imo. Still a cool box though!

Looks really cool . . . but like 'Derek Smalls' in 'This is Spinal Tap', do you mind if I ask a practical question? Why are we looking to generate sub-harmonics when we mix on speakers that only go as low as 40hz in the practical world, put HPFs on our 2-Busses at 28.7 to 30hz, and send to professional mastering engineers who repeat the process and sometimes even limit the low at 40hz and highs at 15khz to maximize loudness? Asking for friends. I’d start by asking your mastering engineer to not do that!

I hardly ever use melodyne plug. I’ll comp a vocal, export, tune it in the standalone and then import back in. I do the same thing - probably from back in the day when that was the only viable option as it used to lock up PT on a regular basis when it first had the option to run as a plug. Print an instrumental, export what you need to tune and use it as a stand alone plugin. I’ve had some bugs with them in the past but nothing like you’re describing. I’d be pissed off too if I had to deal with that bs!

I know when Martin was out at our place trying out some vintage microphones I had them all patched in to the ssl preamps (9k) just so we had a base line to work from.
After he picked a 67 he liked I threw it into a 1084 for shits and giggles. He preferred the SSL preamp.
Hey different strokes ya know??

Some of the old timers on the webs point to MCI, FWIW. I'm sure that's true. MCI is kind of a polarizing brand. Munch Crunchy Intermittent? Maintenance Come Immediately? More Crap Inside? These are all from the old crusty tech I know who moans one of those slogans every time you mention an MCI console. Up there with the Neve VR honestly. And whoever designed that bussing matrix should be shot.

I have no problems with the J, K, duality, or aws preamps. They sound better than just fine to me. The eq’s are also fantastic.
Now, it sounds like the Neve’s you were working on were in bad need of a re-cap, but any old desk can get like this and lose low end over time if the channel strips aren’t up to spec. Including the old 4K ssl’s.
