When it’s hot out like it is right now, I do enjoy a nice gin martini. Uncle Val’s is specifically the one that really hits the spot.

Wallflowers Bringing down the Horse Any time Jay Bellerose is playing drums and Ryan Freeland is the engineer. Lots of those records about. A few are: Lots of Sara bareilles records are great too. I think this is Jay on this as well. The Mayer records with Sterling on drums are all great. Amazing player. Dude, I LOVE that Ray LaMontagne record. That’s one of my favs. Those drums, tho…unreal. I wish I could get a fraction of that sound. I’ve read Ryan saying that the drum room sound for that particular sound was the drums in the vocal mic. Had to live with it and it’s freaking great!

Todd, I was thinking the same thing! That would be really cool if they go for a plugin with Brainworx or something. I think URS made a plugin version back in the day. Not that that helps anyone now. I used to love those on our HD3 system and pt7

I’d replace the cable with the proper length if you’re able to. If not, get a wall plate and terminate at the wall with Elco or DL. Then get a snake long enough to get from the wall plate to your patch bay and you’re done.

Jason wrote mute automation on the ssl to open the room mics on every snare hit on this tune. I remember him saying it was sent to a publison fx unit to get the sound he got.

Wait, didn't you hear the man? You can't possibly have been influenced by DK because John did LOTS of gigs and blah blah blah blah fuckin' blah "As an influence, uh, no." Seriously, johneppstein , do you ever wear yourself out with this shit? Like, how do you type that out and not cringe so hard that you pull a muscle and then, once recovered, immediately delete it? If cork sniffing were an olympic sport... Well, if you're not from the original SF punk scene you probably wouldn't understand. John, you’re the original hipster!

LOL. I was originally posting a link to what would be an amazing thing to purchase for someone. I wish I was a surgeon. I'd tell my wife, "honey, the new pool's gotta wait."
Edit: for clarity, I'm NOT building a new pool, nor do I have one now.
Congrats on the pool! 🎉

We have a really nice M49 at the studio I worked at for years. Bill is singing into it on this tune, I never thought it was “dark” at all. It’s got a really nice top and and presence to it.

I’ve never engaged it on drums. Even with bashers when using it for hi hat and those awful ping rides (no offense to users of them 😁)
I’ve never used it on snare except for jazz dudes.

I did an entire record for about a month with Warren Haynes - him in the live room playing his electric plugged in through the wall panel, , upstairs into an office That we used for a booth, split into 3 different amps (Super reverb, Carr Mercury, Gibson Falcon) all running at the same time. He sounded like Warren honestly haha. Any tunes that had a slide solo he tracked standing in the booth with the amp. That was his Homestead that was sort of being tweaked day to day by the amp tech. The Railroad Earth album? Yeah... if the booth is upstairs probably can't avoid tie lines! Worked with him on a different thing & he was all about the SLO & Diaz with speaker cables under the door. Still meaning to reach out to you btw! Things have been nutty in my world, not enough time in the days. Yup! There are 3 booths but I had drums in one, bass amp in another, fiddle in the third, needed someplace else to put his amps. He had the Diaz with him (along with a truck load of other amps) but Only used it to track something for a Robben Ford record one night. And yeah man let’s grab a brew at some point. I’m slammed with work and also in house remodeling hell, but we should carve some time!

Hey if anybody is into podcasts, check out The Truth About Vintage Amps with Skip Simmons and Jason Verlinde from the Fretboard Journal. Probably the most entertaining and knowledgeable pod I’ve ever listened to.

sean and Johnkenn, thanks for the tips. I just tossed all these spots into a Google map, so I've got everything saved. We roll in Thursday morning and out Tuesday afternoon. Looking forward to it. Check out the Whitestone Audio folks. Kim is who I use for Mastering and her Husband makes the gear. I think they’ve got a new piece out that’s a little dirtier than their mastering tune loader. I think they spend a fair amount of time down there and would most likely have some connections to any after party happenings going on tonight. Possibly at that 1970’s studio?

If you dig a tele I’d go for it.
I happen to feel at home with one in my hands, and I really can’t stand the Rick neck. Lovely guitars but not fun to play for me.
Wish they still had the 60’s one in Fiesta Red though!

Very cool.
About 7 years ago (wow feels like 2), one of my best friends and I did a trip from NJ to San Francisco and back on our bikes. Did it in about a month sort crisscrossing our way around depending on where we had friends or family who’d let us crash for a night. Did a fair amount of camping too. Probably the best trip I’ve ever taken, even though we had the wrong bikes for the job. I was on a Suzuki Sv650 and he was on a Triumph Thuxton.
So much fun, and we had swore we were going to do Canada to Chile one day, but it never happened. We both got married and he had a kiddo so that was that. Glad I had the opportunity and the ability to just leave life behind for a month!

I can edit instruments till the cows come home. Or bring players in to replace band members that aren’t up to snuff (only with their consent). But dealing with singers that can’t bring it to the table is one of those things that makes my head spin and I have a tough time dealing with that frustration.

Dangerous summing into VP-28 into SSL bus comp. Back into PT and depending on the music I’ll sometimes throw something else on there for flavor, very rarely an eq, and sometimes the FF L2 to bring things up to level without popping any overs.

I like the stuff! It’s maybe a 1 bottle every year sort of thing for me, it’s got a very specific spiced cinnamon thing going on, and if I’m in the mood for it, kinda hard to beat. It’s hot but not as crazy as something like the Stagg Jr that I have that is high proof and let’s you know it.
Nothing an ice cube can’t help out with if it’s a bit too much though!
