Officially - 1 year.
Unofficially, I have everything I’ve ever worked on. Probably stuff I shouldn’t even have honestly.
The client gets 2 drives when I'm finished with a project. A work drive and a backup drive. They are mirror images of each other, and I have a 3rd that goes into my closet full of drives. The drives are factored into the budget. I don’t take a no for an answer on that one.
I tell them up front that when I’m finished mixing I will sit and print through any tracks that are using outboard or plugins that are important to the sound, and will also print stems for them if they so desire. That is done on an hourly basis. I’d say about 1/4 of the clients take me up on that. If it’s a label project, they usually expect to have stems printed anyway upon delivery.
I was just asked last week to provide stems for a project I did about a year ago where they wanted to send the stems to have them transcribed for sheet music. Opened up my session files and the stems were sitting right there. Boom! Present me is patting past me on the back for not letting them slack and making my life easier.

Rest up and feel better wiz. Do they have Throat Coat tea in oz? It’s the only thing that helps me out when I’ve got the sore throat.

Last surround we did was for a live Warren Haynes concert dvd. Even then there isn’t much you can add to the surrounds. He did some Dark Side tunes which we got a little trippy with.
I actually had to order up some seas drivers as every time we blew a mid driver in the mains I would just pop one out of the surround speakers and swap them as we hadn’t used the system in almost 8 years.

$250 for a 26er? (aka 5th aka 750 mil) Yes sir. There is a secondary market for booze just like 'vintage' recording gear. I have bottles I paid 60 for worth around 1000. Its goofy. Bourbon has kinda become another version of vintage guitars for rich hedge fund managers and doctors. Trophies on the wall. So then dudes like John and me who actually like to drink em and don't see them as a trophy or money making opportunity have to hunt and play the game. This drives me absolutely nuts. They keep the Buffalo Trace behind the counters here and only sell 1 bottle at a time because people were buying the entire shelf of it and selling it on the secondary market. Yeah... Buffalo Trace. I don’t get it. That stuff used to just sit on the shelves last year and nobody cared about it.

I’ve got an older (‘82) Strat that I got all jazzed up about putting SD Antiquity something or others in. After years of fighting with those SDs, I finally swapped the original pickups back in and man did it sound way better. I can’t remember what my complaint about the original pickups was. Before I chopped it up and made it into a Coodercaster, I had SD Antiquity Texas Hot pickups in another Strat. I just never got on with the sound and I’m no SRV so I never gelled with the guitar. Probably why I did the Cooder thing with it in the first place. Definitely looking for some slightly under wound clear tone from what I get. I’m a little slammed so I’ve not been able to move on anything yet. Soon!

Problem I always came into was during mixing I was also inserting hardware compressor into some channels but then had no automated level control on the faders. So instead I was automating levels ITB resulting in pushing into the compressors. Not really great.
That's what FINGERS are for. And why we have assistants.
Automating the input levels? Nah. It's not the same thing in terms of gain structure.
Computerts have made people lazy.
My console has fader (moving) and mute automation. Getting it to sync reliably with the DAW and the tape machine is, however to big a PITA.
Fingers.
All hands on deck can work with certain types of music, but I’ve never seen it done in the age of artists and bands wanting numerous recalls. It’s got to be an integrated system for fader automation to even be considered being used. I was just listening to a podcast where John Mayer was discussing how he had something like 21 mix revisions for a song on his last record. Spike mixed it. You’re not getting there with a bunch of assistants messing about with faders all at once.

Just track through the AWS. I’ve never had a problem doing as such. If you can’t make a record on an AWS I don’t know what to tell ya... Alternatively.... Just track through the Warm 412s, I've never had a problem doing as such. If you can't make a record on their 412s I don't know what to tell ya. Never had an opportunity to use any Warm stuff, but I’m sure it’s not gonna screw up anybody’s record!

SNIP If you can’t make a record on an AWS I don’t know what to tell ya... You're either A. A total elitist who demands nothing short of perfection with his designer jelly beans or B. Clueless and reads about how other people make records without ever doing it Hey - can’t I be a little bit of both?!

I accidentally bought a pair of Fathead 2 mics, matched pair, for use in the AS HQ testing labs, and an Oktava SDC Because I love analog outboard and microphones They are fantastic room mics set up in Blum in front of a drum kit! That’s where mine mostly live. I’ve used them as a mono OH and a front kick mic and they shine well there too!

Whew….I wouldn’t pay $400 for one to use….just flip! YMMV. Yeah…and I’m the tube guy….. We had a pair of (real) 175b’s at the studio and I just couldn’t get on with them. I used to try them all the time on different sources and I was always confused as to what the hype was all about. I always just thought I was a dunce. Not saying I’m not, but nice to know somebody else doesn’t get it.

What hardware do you have on the insert? Hard patch the insert ins to the outs and see if the problem persists.

Go sailing . I have a 22 ft j22 sailboat for racing and a 32ft Pearson for chillin Sailing is so much fun. The family took a trip to the Virgin Islands a few years ago and we rented a 52’ mono hull for 10 days. Dad grew up on a 48’ and we had the time of our lives sailed around the islands.

I’ll jump on the side where a tech bench is a necessity. A well lit bench, a scope, oscillator to send tones into the gear, amp and headphones, and a CD player to get program into a piece of gear.
Soldering station, drawer of caps, fuses, resistors, fluke. Might seem pricier, but if you need to bring a tech in to fix stuff it’s nice to have it all on the bench and ready for them to do what they do.
If you have a console, a nice little rolling caddy with a power strip, portable vice, clamp on light and some screwdriver sets are always nice to pull up for them to work in the control room if they have to. Maybe a nice magnifying glass or lens is helpful too. Most techs are pretty old and crotchety so it’s good to start off on the right foot!

How do we all feel about purchasing a Soyuz in the current environment? Not trying to be political at all and not looking at that side of it. Purely - how easy will it be to get these things fixed or serviced in the future?

Does getting gear back from being repaired count? Got back a couple 1176's and my old EHX Electric Mistress...and the V610 I traded a drum kit for to a local studio that had all kind of problems and need $300 worth of repairs (and that's with Spectra charging me half of the hours they actually put into it)...I guess I'm just too trustworthy with trades and buying locally and it's bit me in the ass a few times lately. What was wrong with the V610?

I never liked the big screen on the wall thing for a few reasons. One, It’s hard for me to see and I wind up straining my eyes all day and it gives me a headache (I’ve worn glasses for 30 years). Two, sometimes I just don’t want clients to see what I’m doing. I can’t say how many times I’ve made inaudible edits and a client will sit behind me and swear they can hear it when the real reason is they are looking at the screen and can visually see the edit. Or, I’m not finished with an edit and they start pointing and giving direction on how to do my job. No thanks!
I prefer a regular sized monitor on a cart. That way I can even turn around so I’m facing the client but they can’t see the screen.
Granted, if there is no console in the way and you’re doing everything in the box, having a cart is a hard argument to make.

Over on another site, about 14-15 years ago, I shot out a $110 TNC ACM1200 (Apex 460) against a vintage M49, a famous tech modded -(but then modded again) - vintage U47 which was a FAVORITE at the rental company, a Gefell UM70 and a vintage U87. Guess what...... heh heh Inexpensive mics are much better than they were 20 years ago. How much better and what's worth more (or less) - in the ears of the beholders. In a blind test like I did above, there were a LOT of surprises, and a bunch of unbelievers and quite a few angry people who got mad at me. Go figure.... I know,,,,,, LOL oh man, I LOVE that stuff. When you force people to reckon with their own biases and what they actually like. Brilliant! btw Apex 460 is one of my favorite mics of all time. I mod the hell out of them and end up with 251, C12, and 67-ish mics that I'm proud to use. You basically change every single part and it's not the Apex 460 at all anymore, really, but they're brilliant platforms for this type of work. Telefunken USA really like the 460 as well hahah

Studio has them on every stand and every move mount.
I got a ton of them from a studio closing about a year ago and they will be going on all my stands and mics when it’s built.
I can’t imagine screwing and unscrewing mic clips, especially if you have multiple setups and rooms going a day!

I was a freshman in college when this stuff was everywhere. If You’re + or - 6 or so years from there you knew every word. Doesn’t even matter if you were into that music or not - it was everywhere for that generation. For the most part, the mix doesn’t matter, it’s a Super Bowl halftime show.
To be honest, I’ll take it any day over watching the stones at 80 years old playing what resembles Satisfaction.
