Mic is awesome. Sounds really beautiful on acoustic guitar. Really great on my voice as well, which says a lot because usually the cheaper c12/251 mics sound kind of spikey on me. Can’t wait to try it on a female voice. I’m really curious how a nice custom ck12 capsule would sound on it, but so far it’s a very usable musical sounding mic.

They are stand alone. Software is just something extra.

That option wasn't available when I ordered. Probably would have skipped on that anyway. Kind of defeats the purpose of a budget mic. Figure if it is good as is, then great! If I feel like it can be taken further, I can change the capsule. Maybe a Beesneez or something.

Man, that sounds great. Cool tune too. I kind of want one, but I was a little concerned about the sidechain access. But I agree with your assessment. Seems to work best with the sidechain out. Thanks for making such a thorough video.

I have their nos12 with a Tim Campbell capsule I haven’t used it for a while, but it’s really nice. I use It on mono OH mostly Awesome Ox. They weren't offering capsule upgrades when I ordered. Did you get any other mods or just stock with the upgraded capsule?

I had those primacoustic pads with the steel plate for the last several years. A few weeks ago I switched to some iso pucks. It’s an obvious improvement. I don’t get the smeary lows anymore. I actually ended up throwing those primacoustic pads under my sub. I think the more you can isolate the speakers from surfaces, the better they perform. At least in my small home studio. I'm curious to know what you heard that was different. Just a clearer picture of the sound. Like the speakers are more in focus. Especially as I turn up the volume. Stereo image is better, connection to the sub felt more cohesive. My primacoustic pads were angled so maybe that change helps too? Like maybe I'm not getting as much desk reflection. Plus, they look much neater and tidier.

+1 on the Radial stuff. I have 2 of the cubes and they are built great. I had a Lindell 3 slot I had to return because I couldn’t get my modules to fit in the power rails. They were way too tight. The Heritage looks cool but it doesn’t have a power switch and it has leds that bleed through the front.

I wouldn’t trade a pair a high end speakers that work really well for you, for an entry level pair from another company that you’ve never even used before.

I've yet to find a reverb plugin that I completely love. I always feel like they never really give me that sense of natural space that I'm looking for. However, in my mix only in Reaper experiment the other week, I used Reaper's stock convolution Reaverb. It actually sounds really great! Like, I wasn't even thinking about it. Just put it on because I wasn't allowing myself to use anything else. As I'm sending tracks to the verb, I'm like, wow...this is actually really fantastic! Not a whole lot of control, but man, it actually sounds really good! I guess it's not the best ever, but still worth looking into if you use Reaper. Back when I used to have the Slate subscription, I found his Bricati emulation pretty good. But I stopped paying for that a long time ago!

Anyone here have any experience with their stuff? I just took a chance on their 251 clone with all the upgrades. Cinemag transformer, nos tube, wet tantalum capacitor. Sound samples of the stock one I could find online sounded very good. Samples of a modded c12 vs their stock were also really good compared to the usual cheaper clone stuff like Warm and Avantone. I know they’re a house brand of JRR shop. Price was really excellent compared to other clones as well. Always wanted something in the 251 family, so we’ll see how this goes!

I'm starting to do some tests. I took the acoustic guitar file that I recorded for the video. Since I had split that signal from my console to record right to digital and tape at the same time, I took the digital file and fed it back to the tape machine at the same levels and everything. The google drive link is below, I've level matched as well as aligned the files, so you can throw them in your DAW and get picky if you want to. There's is definitely a difference, it's a bit subtle but it's there. I couldn't really tell you if I like one more than the other one, at some point I'm going to do this with a whole song and hear the cumulative effects. I think that will be a more useful comparison, but already it's sounding like it's enough to make a difference over an entire songs worth of tracks. I want to say that it could be the converters, but I've done tests where I printed a files through my AD/DA process multiple times and wasn't able to hear a difference. I'm sure load comes into play somehow in all of this, but I'm not smart enough to break that down. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1cQwUZmETqi9hBNMlsuIY5eLSpIxtiaFv?usp=sharingVery cool. I think the straight to tape one sounds just a touch more natural and relaxed? Maybe? That was my first kind of immediate reaction to listening. Looking forward to hearing more of your tape experiments!

I don't know how I bought one of his 47's with the existence of this thread, but a trusted engineer had said it was decent....and the Tape Op review. The communication to get the mic was a total debacle. I was promised a Theirsch capsule and a NOS tube...and a warranty. It arrived looking like UPS had played football with the box. The mic was DOA, and it had neither the Theirsch capsule, and the tube was a $10 PSVANE. There were some of the worst looking solder joints I'd ever seen on the capsule and where it's wires connect to the PCB, and in place of shrink wrap at one location was duct tape. There was one wire dangling and not connected to anything, presumably due to the horrible soldering. I emailed 3 times trying to just get a refund. I called multiple numbers that went nowhere. At this point I'm having my tech see if we can make something usable out of it. Happy to provide pics of the horror inside if anybody still wants some laughs. I’d love to see the pictures!

Alto in Brooklyn did a fantastic job with monitors for me a few years back. Took turns setting up a couple pairs on the console. Even put up a pair of ATC’s that I definitely couldn’t afford, but just wanted me to hear them next to my other options. It was a really fun experience.

I was in a similar situation. I didn't up getting any Helios stuff, but if I was going to, I'd go Iron Age all the way. Pre and EQ in one module. Price is great and every interaction I've had with them as a company has been great. If I was rich, I might grab the reissue stuff, but I'm not and I'm not sure how much better it would actually be. I bought a used Lh95 so I’m sure the H9 sounds great. I’m in the EU so the H2 500 eq is the same price as getting an H9 after paying import duties so I’m not sure which one to get. They both seem very well built Well with the H9, you get the pre and the eq in one unit. Not sure if you need the pre as well, but that makes it a good deal to me.

dig it for old school vocals too.
How does it compare to a tube mic, regarding 'old school' aesthetic?
It’s different. Much more bandwidth limited sounding. Kinda pushes the midrange forward with a rolled off top. Very creamy sounding.

I honestly wouldn't buy anything! I did a mix recently that just wasn't happening. Plenty of UAD stuff on there. Some SSL plugs, FUSE ect....Wasn't bad, just wasn't coming together the way I wanted. Decided to give the mix a fresh shot on my work computer. All I have at work is Reaper and stock Reaper plugs. Also using a freaking mki scarlett and mki JBL305's. Obviously, I knew the song really well at this point, but I made a mix that sounded equal and better to what I was doing at home on my several thousand-dollar setup. Wish I could go back in time and just make myself learn how to mix better lol. It would have saved me lots of money. Of course, for certain projects, all my fancy gear and plugins come in handy, but for this particular track, simple was the way to go. I feel this way sometimes as well. But the catch is that I only learned how to mix better by building out all these tools and things. Working with real hardware and more complex plugins led me to the sounds and moves that I like... which I can now get pretty close to using pretty much anything as long as it's not straight up awful quality. Oh totally....I know what to shoot for using Reaper plugs now that I have a ton of experience on other plugins and hardware. But still....
