Love your work Dan. For mine the 47 really suited you but being picky I reckon neither mic was optimum for Sally; she’ s a great singer but like Alison Krause etc, that edgy female country singer sound is very hard to capture with a condenser and could possibly benefit from a ribbon. Having said that, the 87 is a great mic which only suffers because you’ve a great 47/ beside it. Thank you for taking the time to share - very educational. Cheers, Ross

Sorry - blew that post ; but to continue - beautifully put Wiz; at the end of the day no matter how hard it seems right now , the bank balance is not where it's truly at. Reminding others what's important is not some didactic exercise of course but something felt through our expression and even if we only touch one we've contributed meaningfully. That is the pay off and there is where we should all head to improve this global society. It's the gift that keeps giving to both receiver and giver. Cheers, Ross

Well so far I have seen extremely positive results from the Facebook marketing campaign. The cost vs exposure has been far better than I expected. I think its good value atm as a promotional expenditure. I also did a segment on radio here in OZ, on the ABC which is the national broadcaster.. .though I think the segment only extends a few hundred miles in circumference..... I prerecorded a live performance in my studio, and they played that, then the single "Guitar Strings Pen Paper". Was really positively received. So that's great as well. I think the thing for me to do , is shift my focus from being so heavily bottom lined ,... to one of connection and quality and artistic truth (not that I have ever not been who I am) and target the correct demographic... and gain joy from sharing what I do with those who enjoy it... if the money comes, it comes... This process has been a sort of artistic watershed for me, and I am grateful for the advice and support I have recieved here. Cheers Wiz If there's one thing to come out of this pandemic for me it's the reminder that if I can see past needing money , it's the real need to connect with others and help to remind them what is truly important in life.

Interested that you might think of selling it if you got the Redd; wouldn't it be kind of like owning an 87 and a 67. Cheers, Ross

Picked up an Eastman E1D acoustic which arr today to break up the New Zealand lockdown after almost 3 months without an instrument. It's the bottom line of their solid timber models with Sitka top, sapele back and sides and mahogany neck. A cheap but very nice instrument ; minimum embellishments that plays really accurately with a big sound.

Congrats Martin; I reckon your quest is over. My reading of it is that the SA67 is a little less 2.5k-ish than the Redd - not a bad thing at all as it sounds very natural and would take eq if you want it to. Without having any to compare to I'm hazarding a guess you'll find similar differences when comparing with a re-issue. It's the same feeling I get when comparing my SA 87 to my memory of a U87 ; it's very natural without the edge and works on almost anything. Interestingly mine's got a Heisserman cap in it yet still achieves similar effect .
Hats off to Joshua and Tim on this one, a great result on this evidence.
Cheers, Ross
P.S Am going to ht Tim up for a CK12 to put in my Rode NT2000 when I'm back home from lockdown in New Zealand. He says it'll sound great with that circuit.

You usually don't have control over what instrument a person shows up with to a session. Don't be afraid to use EQ to get rid of resonances. Your ears will know when its right. You really shouldn't need to worry about it if you're intelligent with your mic choice and placement.
Distance smoothes out body resonances. Therefore it's best to use a mic that's good at a distance (around 2ft, give or take) and has superior off-axis response.
Closeness exaggerates body resonances. Distance diminishes them.
Totally agree and the other one someone already mentioned is omni if you have the mic (and possibly the room) Cheers, Ross

John and anyone else for that matter, trust your own ears and get on making your own great music. Too much head shit of what ifs and second guessing is absolutely counter productive to creativity which is why many of us do this in the first place. Does it easily do the job for you in a way that sounds great? Yes or no - end of story.
FWIW, what I've heard on line means I'm seriously considering it (with summing) when upgrading next as it sounds great and cuts to the chase. While still in it's infancy you can bet UA wii have it growing up quickly. Cheers, Ross

And this is live under pressure; that aint easy as any little inability and /or fear will be magnified. So much to admire with this young woman - for me it's the easy rhythm in her whole performance which speaks to who she is ; she has a big career ahead if she wants it. really excellent.
As to EZ bass, some well played live percussion can often ameliorate the grid issue. I'm a bass player and for me unless you're a good player with a good sounding set up then issues may conspire to make the live performance a bit of a headache. If your gig is writing songs a la John then a clean bottom end that allows the song to shine could be the ticket. My only criticism is that at the mo it doesn't have acoustic upright.
Cheers, Ross

Letting you all know Andrew Scheps has just completed a 2 hr interview with Ken Scott on Puremix. It's already available on Youtube and as you may imagine is required viewing particularly in Covid times.
For you who dont know of him here he's IMO amongst the small echelon of all time best Engineer/ Mixer/ Producers - Beatles White Album, Bowie , Elton John , Supertramp (Crime of the Century, Crisis What Crisis), Lou Reed (Walk on the Wild Side), Mahavishnu Orchestra , Jeff Beck, Missing Persons, Stanley Clark and so on. The quality of sound is obvious in all his work.
Nuggets such as Bowie doing first take one pass vocals most times or Bernie Taupin bringing "Rocket Man" lyrics to breakfast and Elton writing the music in virtually 10 mins.
Great stuff. Cheers, Ross

It's ANZAC day here in Australia and New Zealand; the day we remember the men and women who fought in the major conflicts of the last 120 years . Its usually very big with major televised parades and dawn services around town cenotaphs etc. With Covid restrictions in place, this year we stood on the road outside our houses at 6.00 a.m. while the 'last post' was played on national radio. My brother and I followed that with a lovely nip of Jim Beam honey bourbon before bacon and eggs. It was perfect at that time on this day so my answer to the O.P. is 'it absolutely depends on the circumstances".

Distance and mic choice/placement in the first instance then dynamic eq at mix time are my tools. And to run against the tide, my KM 84 can be difficult from a resonance point of view; I'll often swap it out for that reason. Cheers, Ross

Listened all day yesterday! Love her. It’s fantastic music. The dog barking in several songs is so funny! Underlines to me how our tastes all differ. I initially liked the subtle use of the dogs and then for mine it distracted the more obviously it was used. No doubting there's a lot of creativity going on though so more power to her. Reminds me of a story i read somewhere where the great guitar player Adrian Bellew went to Frank Zappa's house to listen to some of Frank's new ideas when Frank was looking for a new guitar player. Frank's dogs barked mid - song , Adrian commented how it fitted the music, Frank was impressed and gave him the gig. Of course it no doubt helped that he was a unique player also. Cheers, Ross

I went through this 12 months ago and after listening to many of the higher end ATC 25, concentric genelecs etc as a reference was keen to try the Hedds and found them to be not to my taste, ditto for the Shapes . totally surprised that i ended up with Eve 305 - a brand i'd written off without ever hearing . You might put them on your list; they have a bigger model 307 with very abundant controlled bottom end if you require a louder tracking speaker. I also have the Neumann KH120 and find them a little small to track bass with real ease.
Cheers, Ross

The original M88 is a fine kick mic with no hype just honest full kick. The diaphragms can have a tendency to die over time though. IME the 69 is the poor man's 88 with a less satisfying response reflecting their relative pricing. It's a good all rounder live though that you're not going to worry if you lose or break; probably won't ever set your world on fire though. For me, if I had the money for a 69, I'd save a bit more and get something better. Just my 1.5 cents FWIW Cheers, Ross
