I must admit I stop on to this forum to lurk if I'm curious about something in particular, but I rarely post. Back in the mid-2000's I use to frequent Gearslutz. I'd ask a question from time to time but after a while I just used it as a place to sell gear. I posted some gear there a few weeks ago and forgot about it till today. I decided to read a few thread titles just for shits and giggles. I remembered why I got so turned off that site. Then I started wondering, was it any particular policy or topics that started the purge of actual discussion over there? I swore off gear forums for a good two or three years so it seems to have taken a dump during that time. I apologize in advance if this topic has been beaten to death as much as the word "Neve-ish" was over there.

There's still many "good folks", over at GS contributing.
But...
The "Signal to Noise Ratio", is higher here.
I still have to cringe when someone "corrects" someone like Sigma (Mike Tarsia) or Bob Ohlsson!! Chris

Was probably about the time we started seeing ridiculous amounts of folks popping into threads to denigrate work, services or products only to offer their own services or products as the only true way to success, usually posed in thinly veiled "educational" posts..
But over all it was the constant sychophantic stuff that really got to me. Some exalted member would say something, and anyone who disagreed generally got dogpiled by lackeys vying for status and their master's attention.

Wasn’t it a thread about Jeff/Capi that the mods there clamped down on for no clear reason that prompted the formation of RGO?
I can’t remember exactly what they did, but I’m pretty sure it had something to do with that.
Mr . Kennedy?
Cheers, Geoff

But there were plenty of threads/posts that either got locked or straight up disappeared if an advertiser got bent out of shape about something said. I once called out one of the blowhard guys who would flamboyantly pimp a company's gear, and I got a nice PM from one of the admins telling me that they removed my post because it was "inappropriate".. I'd previously seen posts practically threatening people directly that never got removed, but I questioned an advertiser's mouthpiece publicly and immediately get my peepee slapped.

I'm still there, but only ever frequent the Mastering, Guitar and New Product forums. They are not so bad. It's like any forum, the bigger it gets, the worse the S/N ratio, and the more you have to make frequent use of the Ignore function, once you work out who the worst offenders are. There are a lot of people over there whose opinion I REALLY don't care to read. (I just checked, I have 125 people on my Ignore list!)

I once corrected a mod about his bullying behavior (to someone else, not me). Then I incurred his wrath Jules jumped in. I defended this action to Jules who took the mod's side. So I quietly slinked away and joined some friends here.

Sorry to hear that. I only met Jules one time, and he seemed very nice.
I certainly wish, I could sometimes link RGO's website. I don't like that they censor that at GS! Chris

I guess it was the constant "I've never used a _____, but it really is as good, or even better, than a U47."

Chris I've met Jules a couple of times. He's a pretty good guy in person, but he has, er, "peculiar" ideas about moderating a Forum. I suspect it has something to do with advertisers and traffic, as well as the quantity of registered users.

I had to literally challenge Jules (rudely) to get my account deleted, after following all their stated procedures. They don't like deleting accounts, the number goes down it's bad for their business. My exact words were "delete my account if you have the balls". It worked... 😂

Account still open post maybe once every 6 months. GS became more about some kids masturbation fantasy of an LA2, 1176 and an SSL than guys who actually own gear and using to um god forbid, record music.

I'm guessing the fact that it has a strong European and North American membership has kept it chugging along. Just about every question has been asked and answered multiple times by hundreds of people. Maybe a forum should never get that big. The Signal to Noise ratio analogy make perfect sense.

When I realized that Every topic followed this format:
Q: “Hey guys, which is better, product x or y” A: “Neither, buy product z”
Or
A: “Dude, don’t you know you’re supposed to work on room treatment first” (as if they know if your room is treated in the first place)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Yep. I'm guilty of falling into the above pattern too sometimes. But at least I DO (usually) ask how their recording area is... Chris

Somehow my reality has become a (very) low rent version of that. Studio Projects VTB-1>Bellari LA120>Mackie Onyx Blackjack or VLZ Onyx mixer! Chris

I assume if they're asking these questions that have been answered 100000 times already, they probably don't have a treated room.. Yeah but how annoying is it when someone asks, "hey which of these two monitors are better?", and the answer is "treat your room". Or when "which pre is better", is answered "dude, buy a new mic instead". Or when "which mic is better?", is answered "dude, its all about the player and room"... I mean everything is just sooo off topic there its crazy. And these are not well meaning, polite suggestions coming from a lot of these people. Its people trying to one-up each other with their "knowledge". Its almost as annoying as when people brag about how they use their $3000 compressor "just for 1-2 db of gr, at the most". Anyway, rant over. That place has some good info posted, but mostly it just sucks.

Except for your last sentence, I totally agree. IMHO the positives, outweigh the negatives.
Abbott and Costello would have had a field day there though, coming up with more comic routines! Chris

I can’t remember exactly what they did, but I’m pretty sure it had something to do with that. Mr . Kennedy? Cheers, Geoff I got banned for like a week for asking why they were deleting posts in the CAPI thread. And the shills were ridiculous. I got banned for a year when they found out I was selling my used stuff under a different handle...I just didn’t want to try and explain that just because I’m selling something it didn’t mean I didn’t think it was good. There were numerous times I bought a peice to try and then decided I just couldn’t justify the price...or I just flat out needed money. I got tired of explaining myself. They said it was a violation of the rules - but it happened right after they warned me about asking about the deleted threads. Anyway, I thought it was bullshit and started this place. I think I’ve deleted about 5 threads in 6 years.

I really think they have inflated their membership number. But anyway, they are a victim of their own success. About five years ago, a manufacturer told me how much they were charging for a year of banner ads...it was more than I’ve made cumulatively in six years. Part of me would love for this place to blow up and then I could go buy a yacht and a Maserati and do things that people with Maseratis do...but then it wouldn’t be as fun. I love you all, but I can be bought. Lol
