I actually stumbled across this place, because I kept reading old threads on GS and kept enjoying what JohnKenn had to say. I commented on a thread at one point and someone PMed me to let me know John had left and to do a search for the "other site." lol. If I'm honest, I really just wanted to see if the song he posted a mic shoot out of was available, cause I liked it.
I still post at GS here and there, but it can be a real hassle. A lot of guys over there either have no real experience and talk out their ass, or have tons of experience and who seem to be jaded by the current status of the industry and knock every new tool that becomes available.
I've also found it hard to post my videos there without it being a hassle. I posted my recent emulations vs clones shootout on thread for the FleA 47, Slate VMS, Advanced Audio, Mic Mod EFX, and TK Mic Room, and found a day later I was sent a warning for spamming and my post had been deleted from most of the threads. I then went on to explain to the moderator that I was an active participant of each thread (which I was) and that the video was relevant to each thread since it showed the sonic qualities of the product we were discussing next to similar and high end alternatives. They let me repost it, but I had to really explain in each post why the post was relevant to each conversation instead of the post just being organically part of the convo as it was when I did the same thing here.

Sorry to see/hear that anyone could go through all that, just for being a valuable/contributing member. Chris

OMG...I thought that RGO was just a sub-forum of GS. No wonder that my post tally wasn't being added to over there. How embarrassing!

Biggest difference, even in the days when I knew most of the mods over there if I felt a mod was being unfair I would never dare communicate that, here I’ll be the first to say it’s John’s party but in private we can talk about things as friends.

I found most of the moderators and one in particular (see my avatar) to be complete frauds. One guy was just a dope living out of a run down apartment telling glamorous lies about his credentials and experience when he was nothing more than a kid with a laptop in his living room trying to resell gear off a janky home made website and GS. It was like pulling back the curtain on Oz. And he would attack people on the forum and ban them if they didn't help promote his completely made up BS opinions about some guys Neve-ish preamp who lives in a n RV with his wife.
When you log on to their website it looks like a haphazard knock off of Sweetwater Sound . They clearly have a website designed to look like it's in the retail business and not the knowledge business.

So I am in full anticipation mode for new gear, right, looking for as much review info as possible, and I dared to hit up the ol' stompin ground. I stumble upon the 1073eq thread, like we have here, and all I see is that nobody actually reads any of the posts in it, and each person almost eggs Josh on to make him respond, so that they can have an individual battle with the guy, like they need an "Argue with a gear maker" Boyscout badge. I find on this forum, almost everything is a conversation with each other, and not just people wanting pity. So weird. The icky feeling I have right now from the immaturity of the people, is why I left. That and typing in the word "slut" at work makes me really worried about the firewall filters and cataloging APIs getting me fired.

Besides the daily of "What's the best" piece of gear threads, where you'd get 20 different responses of 20 different manufacturers, the Amphion thread-which I'm certain was bumped continuously in what was essentially advertising for Amphion- turned me off.

I know for a fact several people got “paid” to keep the Apollo thread going over there. Anyway, just saw on the Stam 1073 thread over there they’re censoring even typing the name Realgearonline. Such a joke. I should replace Gearslutz with “Small Dicks” every time it’s typed.

What’s the deal with the Apollo thread? That thread is how I met half the people here and I never knew of any impropriety.

I got sooo tired of the childish and really nasty tone over there. Real knowledge got harder and harder to find. I love the civility and knowledge here on RGO. Respect to JK.

I still think we need to secretly do a coridanated horsing of some cheap total POS then start a GS thread about it build some hype and laugh as we sell off our hoard at a profit! We could do it once a year or so.

Rarely does Gearslutz provide any real value on actual recording gear unless you get in on the thread very early. After a couple of pages it just turns into a dick measuring contest dominated by a few self proclaimed experts.

I used to read GS regularly, and wondered where JohnKenn went. I found RGO and started posting. I'd never do that at GS.
I value the sense of civility and community we strive for here, as we might if we were in the same room, as I recognize that we're all different people. It works because RGO is relatively small, I doubt if what RGO has could scale up to huge. Most internet forums in my experience are various levels of sh*tshow.

I haven’t gone over there in years.
This place just seems really tolerant, for the most part and the weekend warriors like myself - although I guess I’ve been doing this since 84 so I guess that makes me a slow learner - and the pros and everybody in between are allowed their say.
I guess there isn’t too much of what’s the best x for under $200 here though which helps.
And if you hang here kinda regularly the scale is small enough that you can get to know some of the members experiences and preferences etc which can be helpful.
Once in in a while things get a little heated, but people are passionate about this stuff. Usually things cool off quickly.
So yeah, I’ll stick around here if you’ll have me. That other place? Probably not so much.
Cheers, Geoff

I remeber clearly a thread where “some guy” was telling Dave Darling how wrong he was about using “that lousy” Ua 2-610 for rock guitars, and how it was impossible to use such a lame preamp for heavy guitars... Dave was saying that he had the unit basically permanently sitting with a 57 in one channel and a 121 in the other...and then it became this pile on of how much the 610 sucks....pointing out that here is a an expert at the specific question-rock guitar is what he does day and and day out—yet, rather than any reverence for that, it was like the thirty “who the fuck are they” voices drown that out.
Meanhwile, the people who get kind of blind reverence, i often literally cant name SHIT they've done that sounds good. Sold a lot? Sure—but, what does an engineer have to do with THAT? I saw more and more people just drop out.
I stop by and post every now and again, nearly always in the computer part of the forum, where theres sometimes novel info linked and discussed. When i venture into the “which $1500 LDC will make my vocals most pro, yo” forums, Im reminded how the inmates are now running the asylum.

Unfortunately I've seen some of my posts deleted here (yes, here) and people banned for doubtful reasons there.
Pedantic guys are everywhere.
Ignorant ones are easily found in the purple forum.
By the way I prefer to lurk here than there

Watching a bunch of GS threads get deleted about a gear broker who had burnt a bunch of people (including me) seemed to coincide with his launch of a resurrected product brand along with some GS advertising. Maybe it was just a coincidence but another guy I know who was dudded out of $25k doesn’t seem to think so.
