The website is wonky, currently showing everything as Sold Out on the product page. Maybe that's intentional because technically everything is backordered? Is there a way to directly communicate? It says everything is sold out because everything is sold out. Technically, as far as I know, there is no such thing as "backordered." He sells what he has in stock. The V-Comp will have 5 units available tonight at 8pm - first come first serve. I will guarantee they will sell out in less then 15 seconds, so it's mostly luck. The reason V-Comp is currently listed as "out of stock" is because it won't be "in stock" till 8pm tonight and at 8:00:15 it will be listed as "out of stock" again. The best way you find out about these 'special' sales is via the email newsletter. Best of luck!!

The next batch won't have the original tube but will have eh socket. He is going to a two tube design.. The Retro STA-Level does something similar due to the availability of the 6386 tubes. Same thing with the Manley Vari-Mu's. A decent and sustainable batch of 6386's are difficult to source.

NOS 6386’s whether GE or RCA are going from $80-250...so including them would be foolhardy. Although, these five will have the 6386 included. After this, the production version will have an open socket for you to put in the 6386, but will come stock with a pair of 6BA6’s that do the same thing (gain reduction.) exactly how Retro does it. Does the 6386 make a difference? Hell, I’ve had about 6 retro versions with both the NOS 6386 and the 6BA6 (retro also used the 6BJ6 I think) and I don’t know if I could truthfully say there was much of a difference. I’m sure there’s someone with more experience that could tell a difference. My experience with the Retro is the midrange is marginally smoother with the 6386, though this maybe highly dependent on tube maker and user bias. I tested it with the 6BA6, the JJ 6386 and NOS GE 6386. While I think the GE was the best, honestly, it was not the kind of "holy crap what a difference!!" it was more "hmmm...that seems better...."

Not a fair question I know since you weren't there to know the source or the settings of the V-comp AS audio clips,....but what's your impression of the AS V-Comp Audio clips compared to your memory of your past Retro Sta's ?
I only listened through headphones...but there weren’t my favorite. But with all due respect, these weren’t the first AS samples I’ve kind of scratched my head over.

OK - apparently earbuds don't work well lol. Yes, the character is pillowy. Honestly sounds a little darker than the retros I'm familiar with. But since I threatened to hunt Chris down and kidnap his dog, I will have a purchased one this week to test out for myself. (There are a few perks of spending a shit load of money every month to keep this board afloat) I'd like to know what settings the samples were on. I tended to use Double attack and fastish release on vocals. These examples sound crushed, which makes sense if you're trying to show how it compresses. Towards the end, I started using single with vocals though. In these it does sound a little more mid pushed than the retro. We will see. I would imagine a little goes a long way with this comp.

Is there a way to directly communicate? Yes, the owner is Chris Yetter and his email address is audioscapeaudio@gmail.com He's pretty responsive. Twice I've wanted items that were not in stock. The first time was for an Opto compressor. I emailed Chris and he said he was waiting on a part and would have it ready for me in a couple or three weeks. A short time later I got an invoice, paid it, and the compressor was at my door in a few days. The second time was this month. I wanted the Buss Compressor, it was out of stock, I emailed Chris and I guess my timing was good because he emailed me back saying he just put two up for sale on the website. Second that. Got lucky and found the in-stock window. Arrived in four days. (Edit: the buss compressor - clarifying) My third A-S purchase and all instances were very normal and transparent. Silly that thanks to other makers out there that this is even discussed, actually. But, you may only buy what he has ready to ship and I really appreciate that fact.

I scored a V-comp. Didn’t mean to. I went through the whole process thinking I wouldn’t get in, just trying for fun. Ended up snagging one! I don’t expect it to unseat my Highland Dynamics BG2. If not, I’ll offer it up here to anyone that wants it.

Well you can certainly hear that extra texture and smooth presence, not having ever used a sta, what are the three types actually referring to in terms of the circuit ?

Exciting!! I've always favored single with fast to several clicks to the left depending on song and how much I want to hear my lungs gasping for air and rarely go more then 10db on myself, but routinely go deeper on more peaky, mid rangey singers. I just listen for the release. On some mics, especially ones with some top end, I love hearing the slight whistle I get through my front teeth, on flatter mics, like a 44, it can get really heavy fast. I once went way to far on a friend of mine that required some heavy d-essing in post. He was still happy. I dunno, I love the Retro Sta. Once the gleam wears off, I'll be interested to hear about how people fell the V stacks up against the Retro and if they are basically interchangeable.

Not exactly positive and I'm sure someone will have a better explanation, but wtf, it's been my understanding it's mostly like an attack in how fast and deep the thing starts to compress and also changes the release character.
