On the subject of makeup gain, all the talk has been about getting the 6dB back in hardware land. Anything wrong with just adding it back with clean boost in the DAW?

Wow! I love the density of this build/design.

LOL Yeah it’s a serious project. I lost steam about 30 hours in. Second wind arrived yesterday, hoping to be finished Mon/Tues. Approaching the last 4 boards in a more efficient manner.

I'm Ward's buddy that's building one. Started Friday evening and by lunchtime today I put all the back end stuff in the chassis. I will say that I thought about killing myself a couple of times when soldering up the back plane....hahaha. I think I may build the op-amps tomorrow after some mix recalls. Bram, I've been tuning in to see your progress, looking great man!

Bram, I've been tuning in to see your progress, looking great man! Thanks Scott! Yes, the back pane was the first place I started to feel the grind. Keep up the good work, it’s totally doable. How many channels are you building? I’ve got about 2 hours left of the build: switches, transformers, and LEDs . Audio-gods willing I’ll be wrapped up tomorrow. For the last 4 channel cards I decided to work on them all simultaneously (ie install diodes on all 4 cards before moving on to resistors on all, then caps, etc...). It’s been a lot faster for me to work in an assembly line fashion by prepping (bending/shaping), for example, all resistors of the same value first before placing them on the boards, instead of: bend, install, cut, bend, install, cut, solder etc... that’s a lot of extra movements that add up time and effort by picking up and putting down the snips/iron hundreds of times over. Maybe this is all common practice for those who work with electronics day in and out, but I’ve found by doing all the shaping of axial components in one go, putting ‘em in a small box, installing them, placing tape over the components, cutting all the leads before soldering, then soldering them all in one swoop to be very energy and time efficient, as well as being easy to keep track of where I’m at in the progression.

Hey Bram, I'm building a 16 X 2....for now. I've all but taken the last 30 hours away from it but I'm looking forward to getting back to it this evening. Up to this point I've only had to deal with the output boards for the A Bus as duplicate but I also populated all slots with components first on those and plan to do the same for getting into all that's left! You might even have yours done by the time you see this reply, which is awesome! I'm enjoying the build but am also looking forward to the end of it and using this magnificent beast! Good luck with the rest of your build if you're not already completed! Scott

For sure, it helps to know there will be an awesome piece of gear waiting for us at the end of the build! I'll be getting to the bench in a few hours to finish up this evening.

After a short delay (I was missing a piece of hardware. Jeff got me sorted out quickly. Thank you!) the build is complete: Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedTotal build time for 16x2: 59 hours I'm in the process of rewiring the studio, but once that's done I plan on posting some sonic examples and ACA Opamp differences. cheers Full photo album: CAPI Sumbus Build

Just chiming in to say how much I’m enjoying reading about this. I’m using a D-Box today, usually into 2x vp28’s. Really has me thinking about a 16x2 setup. Not sure if the SB1 or SB2 is best for my workflow....gotta think on it and hope to see more people’s experiences before deciding!

I would like to recoup some investment back with the SB2's first plus I have a bunch of other things that are more pressing IMO.

I still might wait for a SB1x8/SB2x16X4 version if that ever happens...

I still might wait for a SB1x8/SB2x16X4 version if that ever happens... Why is that, curiously? ie. What workflow element would you be looking to achieve with both the SB1 AND the SB2? To submix from teh SB1 into the 2?

I’ve gotten it working...I’m still figuring out the best process. Right now, I’m mixing into the sumbus, back in through my pair of still to be announced (soon) pres and printing that track. Then mastering that stereo file. For small stuff I’ll just bounce that mastered track itb. For more important stuff, I’ll print that track with the itb mastering running line level through the pres...then export the wav file. Hey John - curiously; prior to this, did you ever do any analog summing? Curious to know if the 8x2 experience thus far is comparable to any other summing experience...

So if you have 2 busses you could send your vocal hotter to one buss than the other. Be cool to have 8ch of the SB1 and 16ch of SB2 in one unit. Likely end up with a 32x4 though.

And here I thought CAPI was a tax dodge for the Steiger family empire 😳 Seriously though we would all like to see you recoup some of that investment and what else has been keeping you busy. If

How are everyone's ACAs going? Any updates on builds or mixes you can share? Would love to hear some more.

The best thing to do would be contact Jeff and get one of his demo units. No matter the mixer the sonic API signature will be there but we all create our own sound with it. You’ll love it! I do have plenty of mixes I could let you hear but I’m not sure you’d be able to understand what the SumBus is doing for the mix.

You can hear a more relaxed, wider, deeper sound. Btw - Bart, thanks for the input on not hitting it very hard. Really opened it up. And cranking the output on the pres and then pulling adding input as needed. I’m actually going to start tracking some vocals that way too.

Here's a new one to try if you haven't yet per Jeffs suggestion: Instead of turning up the mic pre for your make up gain, try turning up the Channel Fader gain. It's a slightly different sound and well worth experimenting with. Also, I have been experimenting with hitting the SumBus just a tad harder (maybe 1.5dB) and then hitting the VP28s a tad harder and backing down the input to my Burl B2 A/D by 2dB so that everything is hitting those transformers a couple dB hotter and man I gotta say, I'm really digging it. Sometimes it's a bit over the top but sometimes it really glues things together incredibly well. I just ran an ITB mix into the Sumbus chain with that setting and it absolutely destroyed the ITB mix. It just sounds freaking ANALOG!! Imagine that! Haha! The main difference was how wide the vocal became and how clear the drums and bass were. Gotta love it!
