So I'm a little late to the BV12 swap party for the IO Audio 67 but just got it back last night (thanks Doug!) and now wishing I'd done it sooner. I've always dug this mic in the 5 years or so I've had it, even sold my InnerTUBE 87 mod when I first got it (kinda wish I'd kept it around sometimes as it's a beast in it's own way). I'd done the tube rolling, found 2 I loved and in general was always happy with it. Had it not been for this thread as well as my finding an old session done with a rented original I think I might've missed what now has made it a very special mic. Currently running it with a nice NOS Valvo, just loving the sound.

Damn.... what a sax sound! The FleA 49 sounded great too, but a little mellow and took up a little too much sonic real estate. I could make that work with EQ I’m sure. I actually would have preferred it if the sax were the feature. I also threw up my BLUE Woodpecker, which is bright for a ribbon and I really like it on trumpet, but it was a little dull compared to the others. The U67 was more reedy sounding, and with a little top end boost from my Neve 1084 clone it was just right. You can hear the sax in the quiet moments and it doesn’t seem to swallow the lead vocal during the big swells. Of course I was smart and did the most important thing when recording saxophone.... I hired an amazing player. Adam Tese recorded with and played for Debbie Gibson and Taylor Dayne. I met him through my orchestrator who had worked with him on stage and in the studio. All I had to do was place the mics and he just did the rest. **Edit, listening with fresh ears I find it might go either way. We'll see how things sound after we record Emily's final vocal. There is just a scratch on there at the moment. http://instagram.com/p/CEHHJ8lhO3M

Has anyone purchaseed a BV12 or body tube through Sennheiser/Neumann USA yet? Curious if it was an easy experience or not. Anyone get one through a dealer?

I bought a used Neumann IC4 for a good deal. Planning on modding it out to fit a Gotham 7 pin.

I had an adk z67 for a while (would love one again some day) and it did a similar thing on my voice that I miss a lot. Just brought the ADK Z67 in on demo. Hoping to track samples this weekend.

Hoping to track samples this weekend. would love to hear your thoughts on it. I own the ADK tc-67, the cardioid only version. The Z Mod has a better capsule and better components and if it’s a significant improvement might be a buy in the semi near future.

Finally had a little time to try a few roughs with the SA67, and it's really interesting. Something shifted a little. Even though I know Stam burns in and tests their mics thoroughly, I think my tube may have just finished completely breaking in. It sounds more like a vintage 67 now. Before it was somewhere between the reissue and the vintage, (still a very good thing).
I'm also beginning to see how well 67's handle EQ if needed. I'm a very happy camper now. For the SA67 to edge out the wonderful Soyuz 0-19 FET as my go-to vocal mic is quite a feat.

The NOS Telefunken. It's an expensive tube, but my mic sure sounds like a 67 now. I'll try to post a few seconds of a vocal I did with it later. The song isn't done, but it's a good example of the SA67 I think..

At the risk of exposing something way premature, here's a vocal done with the SA67 in my untreated and noisy living room. There's no EQ, no compression, no de-esser, no L2, just a little reverb. It's an old song I'm working on with a friend for fun. I hope to try the SA67 in a proper studio sometime soon, but it depends on the Covid situation here. Turn it up a bit, it's not a mastered track and the level is low.

Sounds great Martin!! The stam SA67 really suits your voice perfectly. I recorded vocals for a rock song last night using a STAM SA67 (all upgrades) -> louder than liftoff silver bullet pre amp -> audioscape LA2A and it was the easiest most effortless vocal session of my life! The song has a bit of an edge too it and beatles meets nirvana vibes and it just worked.
Love the stam SA67!! Can't wait to try my pair of SA67s on drums

Of course not being in a proper studio, or listening to just a vocal without the track, or any EQ or compression can skew assessments, but I think the SA67 sounds like a 67.
Now I don't have as extensive an amount of time using Neumann U67's as some of our more experienced members do, so I'm curious what those who've had a lifetime of experience with them can hear from that rough vocal.
I'm really looking forward to comparing it mano a mano to a vintage 67, but it may be a while before I can get that done.

SNIP A great sound, for sure! Lots of detail and the perfect frequency balance for your voice. It sounds like being there, isn't that the goal?

Thank you Ward, that's much appreciated. When I'm the singer it's easy to make negative assessments. Hearing your own voice is fundamentally weird :-)
There was perhaps a pinch too much reverb, but I just solo'd the track and bounced. That reverb practically vanishes when the rest of the track is playing.

This is still my favorite LDC mic even after acquiring a Flea 47, Bock 251 and a custom build C12 style mic with a Tim Campbell capsule and NOS Milspec GE6072 tube.
Unbeknown to most is the U87 was not Neumann's only replacement for the U67 in terms of their production timeline.
The U77 was also released in 1967 but was relatively short lived (1967 - 1971) as it used the older 12v 'T' Power standard and as 48v phantom power was officially standardized Neumann also released the U87 which ran concurrently with the U77 until Neumann ceased production of the U77 in 1971.
Some say it is a cross between a U67 and U87.
I can't confirm that not having a U67 to compare it with but it remains my desert island LDC inspite of having no tubes and no transformers.
Want it to sound more 'tube' like? Then use an 'old school' tube pre. For incredible detail and 3D'ness' then something like a Twin Servo etc.
Has the cleanest sibilance of any LDC I've heard.
From my cold dead hands...
