Doug (EMRR) did my transformer swap, I just got it back on Monday. Going to give it a spin tonight. Unfortunately due to the present state of the world I’m not sure when I’ll be able to try it on a real singer. I’ve been loving mine. Enjoy it.

Yeah I’ve done 3 recently, one was the Moby transformer, also great sounding. I can turn them around pretty fast.

I was legit shocked when I first heard the difference. I had a stock and modded MK67 side by side. Sticking a Neumann transformer in this was a worthwhile upgrade, in my opinion.
Working on one for someone right now, coincidently. Also, I had a stash of NOS Siemens output capacitors I've been offering to put in. Most everyone has opted in. Might only have one or two left.
I found a great deal on an old Neumann swivel mount that I'm going to rebuild with Gotham tube mic cable and Neutrik connectors.

I have been really curious about how much that out put capacitor affected the sound. I’d love to get this next to the reissue at some point. All I can say is this microphone has not been put away since I got it back. I did a pop/rock duet studio vocal session with a rock singer friend of mine for a client. We both used the microphone and it was just gorgeous sounding. The mix engineer even mentioned it to the writer after getting our tracks. Also, did a session with my brother who is an R&B singer and it was fantastic for that too.

So far I feel it's subtle, I'd be hard pressed right off to identify it. Maybe after some more time. One thing about it, and I need to measure it again now that it's been in use some: series resistance was much higher than the stock new cap, something between 2-3 ohms at 1K, and 14 ohms at 120Hz. Fraction of an ohm in a brand new cap.

You guys are the best, let me get ahold of the transformer and get this going. I swapped over to a Gotham cable from Microphone-Parts (too lazy to build my own as theirs was a good deal) and I'm digging the Telefunken tube in it at the moment, just want that little bit more if it's there for grabs. A little bit off topic but I'm all about transformers at the moment after using a buddies original 1073, comparing my EZ1081's to files I did with original 1081's, and getting one of Dan's Wolfboxes. Maybe misguided, maybe too much time on my hands at this moment, or maybe purely psychological but things just seem to feel that little bit bigger and better.

Yeah, I did the output cap swap when Adam did the upgrade. I just haven’t heard the mod without it and was curious.

I had one with the stock output cap and one with the Siemens side by side. I found it to be less hard and smoother in the mid-range. A tad bigger on the bottom. Subtle? Sure. Tube swap would make a bigger difference. But it wasn’t a super expensive endeavor. And it’s cool to me to use the same output capacitor as some of the old mics.

I tried out the MK67 with the new Neumann transformer. I also have a NOS Telefunken EF86 in it.
The Neumann transformer swap made a huge difference. It took care of the frequency response issues I feel the stock MK67 has. A slightly more open top and less mud in the low mids. It's not bright by any means, but sounds how I expect a U67 to sound. I feel like I finally have this mic where I want it.
I still have the reissue mode on mine. I expected the new transformer to make it too bright, but it might actually be slightly smoother. I think I will be using the non-issue mode 90% of the time but it's a nice option to have.
I'm excited to try it on some other instruments and some real musicians. When things get back to normal I might go to a studio here that has vintage and reissue 67s and do a little shootout.

I think I’m gonna jump on this mod soon as well. Just gotta get ahold of the Neumann transformer. Shipping overseas may take a bit longer right now with all that’s going on these days.

Since you're all swapping the transformers for the neumann ones: do you want to get rid of the original mk67 transformer? Hit me up.I would like to use them for a diy U67. Realised that wasn't the best option for me.

Well here is a little teaser. My friend Mike Anderson usually records using an M49. He had an older, workhorse , tube Charter Oak microphone laying around and asked me to install one of my CT67 capsules in it. He made this little video while going stir crazy during this lockdown. All the audio you hear is recorded with this mic, the guitar and vocal, using a neumann 276 solid state preamp into protools and then added a bit of compression. Notice his distance to the mic.

If all the clips on Audio Test Kitchen are accurate, it does not. More like a cross between the M269 and U67 without much of the mojo. This has been the consensus of many of the owners of the MA200 or MA300 I’ve spoken with as well. EDIT: That doesn’t make it a bad mic. I know a number of people who use it as their workhorse, but once you use a good U67 you understand the hype.

There's a certain bigness while staying focused no other vintage mic has that a vintage U67 has. Of all the mics I've tried, as good as some of them are, only the Chandler Redd has that going on too. I have high hopes for the Stam SA67 which will be here in a few weeks.
