The MK 67 wins though. I wouldn't mind having one of those baby's at some point. I'm planning on getting the Stam SA47 later this year though. I just had the Flea 47 in my studio. A friend of mine owns one and wanted to try a few of my mics, including the MK U67. On his voice the Flea just dominated. The MK U67 also sounded good, but very different. The Flea was definitely right for him. I had to opportunity to record a few thing with it for an upcoming shoot out video. It was a fantastic mic. I'd be curious how well the SA47 compares to it. Martin John Butler, you're in Manhattan, right?

@vincent R.
The sibilance gave it away for me. The Neumann capsules do something magical to sibilance... However, as solo vocal they may be close but once compressed, Eq, fx'd, saturated etc in a mix I feel the Neumann will stand out!

Well, a shoot out is in the works. We'll see.
All that said, I think the Max Mod U67 is the best mic in my studio. However, Dave's CM49 does something really special on my voice, but that's neither here nor there.

Very glad to read that - thank you Vincent! Max Not a problem Max. It's just a great work horse and I love it on my operatic vocals. Hoping to put up a YouTube video soon. When we last spoke I asked about an M49 style mic. Any updated plans? You also mentioned releasing your MK U47 as a completed mic, not a kit. Any news on when they'll be available and the cost?

B was my guess (as to which was the MK67). I hadn't had a chance to listen to these so I didn't look at the answer before listening just now.
The MaxMod just sounds bigger to me. Not by a ton, of course.

So, after having ioaudio's MK U67 kit for a few months I upgraded the tube with an EF86 tube recommended and supplied by bowie and I finally got around to recording my first "Live I the Studio" with it. This video is a patriotic tune and will be out for the 4th of July. The shoot out I posted a few weeks ago used the original tube. What amazed me was the change in tone that occurred when I changed out the tube. It seemed to take on more characteristics in the high end of it's original U87 form, but with more bottom end and a more mellow top. With the PF86 it was distinctly beefy in the mids, but really dark on the top. I found myself EQing a significant boost (3.5-4db) in the 5K range to get the sound I was looking for. What I'm finding now is that like my CM49 I really like what I'm hearing right out of the gate and I'm just putting a bottom end roll off at about 60hz to clean it up and leave room for the bass (in this mix a digital tuba) to come through. While I put most people in my studio through the UAD1073 or my ACMP-84, I still prefer my voice through a tube preamp. I tried a few preamps before recording and still settled on my Tab Funkenwerk V78M over my UA Solo 610 which I love with my CM49. Anyway, I'll let everyone know when it's posted.

Thats a cool question. To be honest, I have only the slightest clue about it....given my experience using microphones of all shapes and sizes...
I really can't be sure, but I think a "thinner" coating results in Brighter/Faster and a Thicker Coating Results in Slower/Thicker, but I am basically pulling that guess right out of my ass....
I just noticed people who stretch the diaphragm more are making the mics brighter.

The thinner capsule should track transients more accurately , the thicker less so what you call brightness is likely simply the more accurate capture of the actual signal transients : high end included ?

Neumann's K67 is 3 micron I believe. Dave has said Advanced Audio's is 6 Micron, which creates less of a peak at 10kh so they don't need to use a deemphasis circuit. I'm curious what a 1 micron capsule would do and how it would compare to these.
