I think I remember you saying that. Or maybe it was someone else. It's funny, opinions of those who've compared them range from "holy shit, this is spot on" to "no way, not close". Which may or may not reflect the various states of vintage U67s. Is yours stock? Did you try an EF86 in the MaxMod? The PF86 it comes with is darker and more midrangey. EF86 sounds more open in it. I have no dog in the fight either way. My MaxMod is one of the best if not the best mic I've ever had the pleasure to use so I'm very happy with it. And another person opinion who has a pair of max mods and u67s says they are as close as can be and would have no trouble using them as a stereo pair ( max mod and u67 ) all mics have t funk ef86 tubes installed π I think it was the EF86. My 67 is stock.just had a check up with David Bock. i have comparison files, both going through vintage 1084's into a Burl MS.time permitting I can post later and you guys tell me what you think? imo the MM 67 was darker and had less life to it.

I'd never heard of Anthony Warlow, but man, can that guy sing, just flawless. The 67 is simply the biggest sounding mic ever. And it does that without ever sounding diffuse.
I had a lovely Bock 195 (Soundelux U95), and it had such a wide pickup pattern although set to cardiod that I felt the vocal lost focus. The 67 is gigantic, yet never feels like the focus is shifting. What an amazing thing it is.
I've tried some other beautiful mics with K67 style capsules that cost over $2,000, but they were often much more sensitive to vocalists straying slightly off center position. None of that happens with a U67.

The end of the year might have a few surprises. You've discovered a crate of NOS U67s and you're shipping us each a pair?

That doesn't surprise me. Didn't Klaus go on about how the transformer winding would be proprietary/unknowable and Neumann had meticulous tube selection? Know anyone who's heard the new Manley Reference Silver? The one with Josephson C37 type capsule.

The end of the year might have a few surprises. I'd be surprised if you didn't have a Chandler EMI REDD mic by then.

There is a Neumann winding diagram for the transformer which is out there, so at least some of it is known.

I had one of those Mic Mod 67's over here a couple months ago.the converted tlm 67 one. not even close to my real 67..for one thing is was waay darker[lifeless] by comparison. I've been saying the same thing. They are way off IMO.

Is there any other respected mic connoisseurs/ gurus in the world or is Klaus the man when it comes to Neumann capsules and vintage mics? I know he mods and restores vintage mics...
So Not one mic can sound like the vintage classics other than the classics... ok got it!
What about Andreas Grosser? Or any others what are their opinions?
No where in Thiersch literature does he say he makes and exact copy, just capsules made from original production techniques, which even only if he used one old technique, that is still truth...
Is there no other mic guru testing Neumann capsules? From mic builders and modders I talk with, the Thiersch capsule is highly respected for its quality and sound, not that it's ever been an exact copy π

Know anyone who's heard the new Manley Reference Silver? The one with Josephson C37 type capsule. Interesting. Manley has the Josephson 700 (716) capsule in their Gold mic and now has the Josephson 715 capsule in their Silver mic. So those capsules are available FET with the Josephson circuit & tube with the Manley. But Josephson is coming out with their tube circuit (double topology?) with the 700/716 capsule (CK-12 style) soon & at an msrp of around $8K. I've used the Josephson stuff & they definitely have to be some of the best crafted & sounding mics that exist.

I'd never heard of Anthony Warlow, but man, can that guy sing, just flawless. The 67 is simply the biggest sounding mic ever. And it does that without ever sounding diffuse. Basically when I was 15 I discovered his voice on the complete concept album of Jekyll & Hyde. It changed my course in music. He's based out of Australia and has only been out to the states a few times. He holds the record as the youngest performer to be cast as the Phantom of the Opera. He opened the Australian cast at 28 years old. He has a bunch of albums, but most are imports. You can pick up "Jekyll & Hyde: The Complete Gothic Recording" in the US. Between his voice and Linda Eder's it's worth every penny.

My sentiments exactly, but I'm strapped. And these days I'm really eying another M49 style mic since with my AA CM67LE I basically have two U67s already. Man oh man I wish I could grab it for a pair. I sent it to a couple friends. Maybe one of them will pick it up. I wonder what it will go for. Holy hell, man. That thing sold for $3750 after shipping. Yikes.

The Neumann body tube, badge and shock mount do cost some hundreds. Still sky high but it's not like it's your run of the mill TLM67 + MaxMod kit.
