I really only have direct experience recording with the iaudio mk 'u47 which uses different tubes although like everyone I have heard lots of 47's on various recordings.
Masked and clacky are not adjactives that leapt to mind ? I can appreciate in comparison to a reference mike's flatness that a 47 has its own characteristics, but most people talk about the typical 47 sound in a complimentary way.
I feel this really underscores how we all hear in our own way. I don't think there is right and wrong but their certainly is preference. I personally was struck by my 47's presence in a good way and in comparison to other mikes I have recorded with. But this has led me to be curious about the more modern FET sound: enter Warbler.

Man, I've been going back and forth about which mic to pick up, and I just went through and listened to all the files on the other thread. I'm really leaning toward the MKID or the MKVID. There's something smooth that I like with the MKID that I really like, though. I'm looking for something for Drum/vocal duties. I wonder, though, if the MID will end up being too dark?

I am doing full kit and elec guitars today. I will post some samples of the MKID as OH and cabinet.

I listened to Kidvybes VO samples. The GZ67 definitely sounds more open, more room sound in the mic. But there's something about the presence of the MKID that I like. I understand that the MKVI is in the same family, just extended top end. Just kinda wondering if that extended top end would be too much for Drums/Vocal work? I'm looking to pick up a pair.

What mics are you currently using? I could set a common mic up for comparison. Don't you have a Oktava mod 012?

...so here I recorded a VO comparison of the 3U Audio GZ47fet V, a custom-built Dany Bouchard D-M49b tube mic clone ($2K+) and the new Warbler MKIID...I decided to go sans (no) pop-filter to really capture the detail of these mics since they are somewhat similar, so you may hear the occasional burst of air... D-M49b (with Dany Bouchard's own m7-style D7 capsule) vs. 3U Audio GZ47fet V vs. Warbler MKIID: app.box.com/s/eyy0oklctq8bs3nwc75vtbkes55p06cewhat type of shock mounts are those??

I've picked up a pair of KM84's and sold off my 930's. Looking for a vocal mic to get me by until Shannon finishes up my 251.

Here's a pair of GZ67's on acoustic guitar.
https%3A//soundcloud.com/fir_out/gz67-stereo-acoustic
Both mics here have some gentle HPF and about 1 db being shaved off on peaks by the UAD LA2a Silver.

Here's the pair of GZ67's on OH.
Both mics here have about 1-2 db being shaved off by Slate FG-401. Medium attack and release.

And here's a Warbler I in voice position #3 on mono room/kit mic being crushed by Slate FG-401. I'm very into Beatles/Jeff Lynne kind of drum sounds so I'll often have a mic or two just being hammered and crunched up. https%3A//soundcloud.com/fir_out/warbler-i-mono-room-crush

Had a chance to really hear the MKID pair out as OH. They sounded great. Nice big live room, really didn't need any of the close mics. I will post up samples when I put the studio back together, since this was a mobile gig. Drummer commented on how good the OH's sounded.

Happy holidays, folks!
Just curious- has anyone purchased the gz67 tube mic, yet? I've been looking for something more 67-inspired, and this could potentially deliver if it's anywhere near as spot on as my Warbler!
Just a little hesitant given the pricetag...still need to shell out for new monitors, as well!
Thanks!

RIP Dennis Stone
I just read the terrible news that Dennis Stone (Kidvybes) passed away.
I'm deeply saddened to hear this news. Dennis is one of the most passionate people I've met on this forum. His knowledge about mics and audio technology is second to none and he was always kind and willing to share information. I am indebted to him - I can honestly say that without his reviews of my mics, 3U Audio would have gotten off the ground much slower. I've consulted him many times when making mics and every time we talked I was amazed at his wealth of knowledge. I will miss his contributions here very much. The world will be a poorer place without him.
My condolences are with his family and friends.

GZ47 or GZ251? Anyone have both and can compare them.

I liked the room mics Ragan. Very full, not thin at all.

The very last thing any of this 3U stuff is is thin. I just had my brother play drums on my new record and I used a pair of GZ67Fets on OH and a pair of Warbler MKID's on rooms. Absolutely great. There's no honeymoon period for me with this 3U Audio buzz. I like them more every time I use them. Super glad I sold off more expensive mics and bought other stuff with the windfall. Wasn't even a compromise, I just straight up liked the 3U stuff better, regardless of price.

Got around to putting a vintage U87 up next to the Warbler MKID. Here's a quick vocal comparison.

Great posts Ragan, thanks. Clearly, the GZ67 is a great value, maybe the best I've heard in its price range. If someone picked it over the 87, I wouldn't argue.
For me though, I feel that the 87 still has a way of getting the feeling of the vocalist through better. There's a veil in front of the emotional content on the GZ when compared to the 87. The thing is, I think you can EQ the 87 to sound how you prefer, but I don't think you can EQ the subtle haziness out of the GZ.
