>Wow...what a smartass. No wonder I got banned. Anyway, I do kinda remember that thread - seems like the files sounded like dude was playing the acoutic with a blanket over it.
OT trigger alert:
Ever try playing guitar with a handkerchief draped over your fret hand? You can do it, it hardly impinges your playing at all, but it's a mildly amusing parlor trick.

The uniformity of the 84's polar pattern is extraordinary. This makes placement far less critical than any other mike I've used and it sounds great at distances where other mikes begin to sound muddy. Man, you couldn't be more right about this...Just get it in the room somewhere and it sounds fantastic. Never really experienced another mic like that. It's like a huge sweetspot.

I am really happy that you are having this kind of experience.... its really hard without using one, after using and spending considerable amounts of money on things "KM84 killer, just like a KM84 also slices and dices and is microwabable and freezer safe"... but they really are one of the few things that live up to the hype, and when you finally grab one.... you just use it.. and occasionally whisper to it.. ."I love you" 8) Wiz

Imagine how great it was learning recording at Motown with 25 KM-86s in each studio! It's where I learned a kick mike must always have a windscreen and a shock mount. We bought Shure AM53s for all of them after we discovered they worked better than the Neumann elastic ones.
I went out and bought other mikes so I could learn how to work in other studios. Only EMI-London and the RCA Victor studios had a comparable quantity. At the time Dark Side off the Moon was released a claim was made that it had been entirely recorded with KM-84s. I never questioned that claim.

As much hoopla as the U47, 67, 87 get....it's funny how none of them get the day in day out, "I can record anything with this mic" type of usage as my 84's have gotten over the years. The 87 comes in second, but like you have mentioned so many times, I could do an entire record with the 84's. I only wish I had some 86's to go along with my 84's as I do like the other polar patterns..... What prompted the massive use of 86's at Motown? Did they just get a good deal on buying them in bulk or what?

We wanted to go phantom and we wanted more consistency among our 8 tracking engineers. We had an SM2 that everybody loved as a universal mike so we went with 86s rather than 87s. Lucky we did because early 87s had big distortion issues that the 86s didn't have.

I definitely see how you could say that about 84's. They just kind've work on everything.

Just rented one. Man. Ya'll ain't kidding. Stick this thing anywhere in front of a decent guitar and it just sounds CORRECT. Gibson Songwriter Deluxe --> KM84 --> Heritage DMA73 --> Burl B2. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.
What's a fair price for one? Don't need a beauty pageant winner, just working. The studio I rented this from has a bunch, I might make em an offer.

I bought mine a few years ago, from a guy here in Oz, who got it from Vintage King.. he paid I think 1300 USD, I paid less than that. somewhere around 1000 USD to 1300USD I have seen them go for.. I think vintage king refurb them and offer a six month warranty, if thats important... they are a great great... perhaps the greatest, mic cheers Wiz

Last year, I had a shot at a pair of one owner KM 84s for a grand each. Couldn't raise the cash. Sigh...

I picked up an almost mint KM84 a few months ago. Have owned a KMS84i (vocal version) for many years which is fitted a KK84 capsule. (a friend picked it up from a pawn shop for $30 way before the Internet and eBay) As far as SDC's we have a pair of KM184's, Josephson C42's, Oktava MK-012's, AKG 451EB's, AKG C60 tube and the KM84's usually beat out the rest in almost any situation. In fact if you had nothing but KM84's you could use them to record almost anything from hi-hats to upright bass to even vocals and wind up with a killer recording. KM84's in this condition are getting harder to find.

KM84's are also killer snare drum mics. Take a listen to the snare at the start of "The Great Gig in the Sky" from DSOTM.

I've used the KM-84 on 75% of my tracks, and there's just nothing else like it. I just point it at the guitar and go. Unfortunately, I was borrowing it from a friend, and didn't want to wear out my welcome, so I've been using my Blackspade UM17-B for acoustic, and it too sounds damn good, in fact, quite good enough, but.. once you've gotten used it the 84, there's just no substitute. It's so right, you just get right to getting the performance together, instead of fussing with mics.
I may get a few weeks with the Soyuz 017 and a pair of 011's, now THAT would be interesting to compare to the 84's I've used..

Wow...what a smartass. No wonder I got banned. Anyway, I do kinda remember that thread - seems like the files sounded like dude was playing the acoutic with a blanket over it. Was that the thread where most people preferred the file that later turned out to be the KM184, but then when it was revealed, they started editing/deleting their posts and then saying things like "oh I couldn't hear it, I was listening on computer speakers" trying to save face and shit like that? I remember that one. Hilarious it was. Pages and pages of "This post was removed by user" and such before the mods came in and cleaned it up allowing Fletcher or someone to hock their "KM84 killer" or some such. I remember that thread. That's my absolute favorite part about blind shootouts, is watching cheaper gear get picked over hype gear so much of the time, and then the inevitable backpedaling. I ended up with a KM184 and I'm pretty pleased with it for now. Is the KM84 in the same price range as a Schoeps CMC6? That would be a tough call for me as far as dream mics go.

Ward, I had two U47 FET's at my place for a few weeks a couple of years back. I tried female vocals on both and my wife said she wanted "my mic" instead, ( Blackspade UM-17B). I've heard they're the ne plus ultra kick drum mic, but fail to see their charm otherwise. I haven't used 10% as many mics as some of the cats here, but after the K84's, the next best acoustic guitar mic i've used was the Bock Audio 195. If I was looking at U47FET's, I'd sure look at the 195 as well, it's certainly in the same class, and much less expensive.

I've never actually tried the 184. Aren't they around $800 though? I only paid $200 more for the 84

You can usually get a pair of 184's used for about $1k. Good mics even though most people slag on them.

The FET 47 was as just big a disappointment in 1972 as the 184 was when it came out. (That's why people tried it on the kick drum and left it there.)
A 184 is still better than a great many. The main thing is that you want to only use it with a preamp having an input transformer.
