Many of us have been unsuccessfully seeking an 84 replacement since it was discontinued. The KM140, it's actual replacement, was brighter and the 184 budget version was a huge disappointment. The difference is the incredibly neutral pattern and ability to take eq. that allows you to just throw it up and move on before the musicians grow bored. Other mikes are more hot or cold depending on the source or placement.

I am thinking about it (the 84s). I'm sure it will get sold before I get permission from my bandmates, though

Neumann pride themselves on being able to use any two as a stereo pair. To the best of my knowledge there have never been factory matched pairs although they have sold sets of two including a box for both. Because they are black, that pair on eBay possibly spent most of their life hung in a concert hall which is better than being used in a recording studio.

The i was a dedicated model sold in the U.S. They were strapped for 50 ohms with two 50 Ohm series resistors added to create a 150 Ohm source for older U.S. preamps that were designed for ribbon and dynamic mikes. This lowered the output level and prevented ringing in the output transformer. The mike came with instructions for changing it over to 200 for use with European and post 1970s preamps. You can find the instruction manual on the Neumann site.

Didn't see the 84 sound file John, I have read the entire thread. There's a file posted with a C5, but I didn't see any K84 files. If I missed it, please repost, looking forward to hearing some tracks!

I just couldn't stand it anymore. So, if I get it and feel like I can live without it, it might end up in the classifieds RAW - https%3A//soundcloud.com/johnandkris/k84Room Verb https%3A//soundcloud.com/johnandkris/k84verbSounds great Johnkennwelcome to the 84 club 8) the off axis sound of this mic is great.. thats probably one of its biggest, and sort of not talked about much in comparison to clones, strong points. That, and you won't lose money on it. cheers Wiz

I'm surprised that pair hasn't sold yet. Wonder what the shipping and such would be all in from there?

the off axis sound of this mic is great.. thats probably one of its biggest, and sort of not talked about much in comparison to clones, strong points. That and the "reach" of the mic - which I'd guess are related. It has an uncanny ability to pull pretty far back (further that I'd place most mics) and still capture the detail. Allowing for you to dial in just the right amount of room tone without loosing the intimacy of the instrument.

Yeah - as many have said, it doesn't seem to matter as much where you place it...it just kind've engulfs the sound.

For you KM84 experts: is the 84i the same mic? Seems so. I am fascinated by the history of mics and other equipment. Here's a page on recordinghacks.com talking about the Kleine Mikrofon Modell 84:Neumann KM 84 pageI'd really like to put a pair of KMs up against my Beyer MC930s. There's an old thread on the Purple Site where there was a 50/50 split on preference on an acoustic guitar track. There is also a comment by one JohnKenn (banned), who said: "I would say sell both to fund a new set of strings..." Wise, very wise. Or something. Wow...what a smartass. No wonder I got banned. Anyway, I do kinda remember that thread - seems like the files sounded like dude was playing the acoutic with a blanket over it. Was that the thread where most people preferred the file that later turned out to be the KM184, but then when it was revealed, they started editing/deleting their posts and then saying things like "oh I couldn't hear it, I was listening on computer speakers" trying to save face and shit like that? I remember that one. Hilarious it was. Pages and pages of "This post was removed by user" and such before the mods came in and cleaned it up allowing Fletcher or someone to hock their "KM84 killer" or some such.
