Agreed - you can throw up a stereo pair of these and knock out pretty much all of your acoustic instruments. On of those "stopped looking" purchases.
And as noted earlier above, they actually sound great on vocals too - just really really prone to plosives

Anyone ever compare this to the Beyer MC930's? Never had the pleasure of a KM84, but own a pair of the 930's. They fly a bit under the radar, but from what I read from others, they hold their own.

Gotta be honest...I wouldn't sell this. It's a "put it up and hit record" kinda thing.

John, seriously you can use them to record anything. I have even used mine to get cool vocals with. They are great mics.

It's amazing how much people rave about these and the price isn't absurd. You can buy a trued and true, best of the best, KM84 or a new Telefunken M260 that gets mixed reviews for the same coin.

I think I paid more for mine a few years back but they are a consecutive numbered pair and in really great condition. So I probably paid more for that.

Yeah, I paid $2,600 for my Schoeps stereo pair of CMC64's. New vs. old, but these KM84's always slay me with how smooth they are.

My friend loaned me his K84's last summer. I did some tracks with it, and nothing I've heard can replace them. Of course I can get a great sound from my LDC, and I've received compliments on the sound, but the K84 just sits perfectly, there's a full bottom, but zero bloat, detail, but no harshness and a certain push in the mids that makes you feel the instrument. If I ever get there financially, I'd grab one in a minute.
Go for it John, you'll never look back.

I am a bigger fan of KM-54's, but the 84's certainly have their place.

I am a bigger fan of KM-54's, but the 84's certainly have their place. R Yep. This. The KM54 and M582 are the best Neumann SDCs ever for recording acoustic instruments. The sparkle and air is unreal! But they don't artifically create it. Mic up a Mandolin with one of those and the player's style, technique and tone are totally honestly captured. Mic up a D18 with fresh strings and a light pick, and you get 'shing' for days. Mic up a D28 with a medium pick and either strumming or flatpicking and you get that strident midrange rosewood yelp!

For you KM84 experts: is the 84i the same mic? Seems so. I am fascinated by the history of mics and other equipment. Here's a page on recordinghacks.com talking about the Kleine Mikrofon Modell 84:Neumann KM 84 pageI'd really like to put a pair of KMs up against my Beyer MC930s. There's an old thread on the Purple Site where there was a 50/50 split on preference on an acoustic guitar track. There is also a comment by one JohnKenn (banned), who said: "I would say sell both to fund a new set of strings..." Wise, very wise. Or something.

I remember that clip. Pretty much impossible to compare, unfortunately. Are they even the same guitar? haha I've always wanted a pair of KM84s, but got the C5 pair to save some coin. I use them on overheads, and that's about it. Way too bright on guitar.

Around 1968 Motown replaced all of our mikes with KM-86s which use two back to back KM84 capsules. When it became obvious Detroit would be closing around 1970 I started buying other mikes and bringing them in so I could learn to use them. The only thing that ever sounded better than an 86 with a touch of eq. was an occasional 57 or 635a. The only other studios in the world I'm aware of who had enough 84s and 86s to do an entire session were RCA and EMI in London. They simply do a great job on anything. The reason they weren't more popular was that they were too easy to steal.

KM84i came strapped for 50 Ohms with a pair of 50 Ohm build-out resistors to make them work properly with tube preamps designed for RCA ribbons. You just cut two wires and move a link to switch it to 200 Ohms which is higher output with solid state preamps.
