Wow got it 100% wrong on the guitar. A monkey throwing $h...t at a board would have done better.. Still very pumped about svart's AD... I have no idea y I can't stop laughing at this lmao I think my wife thinks I'm crazy lol

wow...... It seems I have a preference for more low end and rolled off high frequencies...! Its probably why I picked Bass as my instrument.

Yeah, it's not the bottom and slightly rolled off part of the Apollo that's the problem for me, it's the slightly forward 2Khz...

WOW. this thread went wild!
Honestly I just took this box up to John so I could get an impartial 3rd party impression, I never intended for us to be doing a bunch of blind tests on the thread.
I'm glad we did though, it surely proves a few points.

Hey svart! Now i am pretty interested what the verdict was on the input caps yes/no, what did the wild bunch say?

Yeah, it's not the bottom and slightly rolled off part of the Apollo that's the problem for me, it's the slightly forward 2Khz... agreed, in a way UA updated the signature sound of the 2192; still with a vintage analog model in mind. I have heard lots of great recordings with the apollo, but I found the mid bloom hard to hear into. My adam ax7's may be part of that problem too. I like the linearity of svart's box. I think one need to be aware of how many transformers you have in your signal path. having had the b2 , I also understand how JK loves to pass the final mix through it and the fact that you can adjust the drive into the transformers on the b2 is a good design element.

Cool stuff. I knew the Burl was C (low end bump and euphonic high end) and figured the Apollo was B but its been over a year since I heard the Apollo. svarts box sounded great! Good for him.

Hey svart! Now i am pretty interested what the verdict was on the input caps yes/no, what did the wild bunch say? All the testing was done on the unit with the input caps since that's what I'll probably put out. I was thinking about this, and in situations like using a preamp with transformer output, you'd be forcing DC back into the transformer secondary, which isn't good. If you are running single ended, then it'll bias the secondary and cause some distortion. This is also in conjunction with doing some null testing with/without the input caps. I've found that the input caps make virtually no difference in the audio because the residual audio is about .001%. I figured this by doing multiple volume processes just to get the residual audio up to a measurable range, and then figuring how much volume was needed vs. what the original signal peak was to get the same value. Probably not as cool as using a lot of expensive gear, but it seems in line with audio experts like Doug Self and Cyril Bateman have said about coupling caps and their extremely small amounts of change when chosen well and implemented well. Thus, I'll be using the input caps.

Sorry, svart...it didn't even occur to me that you probably didn't want any sort of shootout considering this isn't even the final product...But - I think it definitely reflects really positively on your product, though...

Svart so your estimated auditory effect of adding the caps is .001% but the benefit is ?

Svart so your estimated auditory effect of adding the caps is .001% but the benefit is ? The benefit is that there is no 2VDC coming out of the inputs. This could bias some output devices into distortion, and/or could cause currents to be drawn that would either ruin the fidelity of the design or simply make it not work. That's the whole reasoning behind having AC coupling caps to begin with!

They are Nichicon Muse caps, my personal favorites. Yeah I've listened them, and as I mentioned a number of posts up, did a handful of null tests with and without the caps to find that they make an extremely small difference in the sound, so small that I had originally thought the file was completely null, but upon using a lot of volume processing was able to find a tiny residual signal around the noise floor.

Tough call... they all sound pretty good to me. What I would really like to hear is the DAC in my own room, but there's only one way to do that!

Go for caps. Much too small an influence to risk damaging any unbuffered equipment upstream. Yes, that stuff does exist and you can kill it by simply plugging in a cord.

I'm with Cat5 and svart picking his fav caps and moving on and with monkeyxx, really looking forward to hearing the DA in my room ! ! just sold some slate plugs to help pay for this
