I called around to a few dealers, apparently the consensus from the all was that this box is a sleeper, few of them compared the conversion to mytek and lynx. Also said they were really impressed with how solid the drivers were and how this box seems bullet proof when it's being maxed out. I'm def interested, now just gotta sell that C800g I've got listed and I'll be good to go

the price is soooo right, and i'd say motu put the RD money into the right area... sound first everything else secondary, you know, exactly what company's selling conversion SHOULD do. I say kudos to motu

how does it perform on windows PC? Very curious. If the driver is good then I might sell my UFX and get 16A instead.
* Quick question. Can you connect 24AO and AI through an ethernet cable? For example if I am using 24Ao as my main interface connected to a PC through USB can I then add 24Ai to this system by connecting it to the 24Ao through ethernet instead of 6 ADAT cables?

KJ, yes, you can. You can connect up to 5 (if i'm not mistaken) of the MOTU devices via the MOTU AVB switch, and 2 connected directly to each other without having to purchase a switch.

Yes, you can. All our interfaces support 128+128 channels in+out via AVB, which is way more than enough to handle the 24 ins. That leaves the ADAT/Toslink on both boxes open for additional expansion. The only limitation right now is that USB on Windows only supports 24+24 channels at a time in and out of the computer, though it's your choice which I/O those are. We're working on bumping the channel counts for USB on both platforms though. If it's just the 24Ai and 24Ao, you'll be fine for sure. USB performance on Windows is solid. Obviously not as speedy as Thunderbolt on Mac but roughly on par with USB on Mac.

Would you mind if I ask for the exact figures? Say for example latency in ms when tracking in 48 kHz in low buffer setting (but stable enough)?

If you are concerned of higher latency, you shouldn't stay 48kHz, but use 88.2 or 96 instead. In fact, i find this the best reason for 96kHz recording, lower latency. Don't want to argue about things automatically sounding better above 48kHz, but latency IS an issue, esp. for live recording (as long as you don't use analog cue) and usage of virtual instruments at recording time. Roughly on par...for me it sounds like: Different driver architectures for USB and Network protocols on Mac and PC, there is always some difference in latency. Like with all different OS driver architectures...

BTW, thanks Michael, it is great to have you here to clear things up and getting very detailed technical information, i really appreciate it. With a bit of luck and an todays booking of an incoming cheque, will order a 24Ao tomorrow hopefully, latest next week.
I am very interested about how it compares against our Ross Martins, which i rate very high in sound quality. It will be used for firing up consoles and i plan to use a Mytek 8x96 AD via ADAT as clock Master and recording device. I am pretty thrilled how this works out on PC. And I am very seriously awaiting a higher channel count option on PC that could make eventually an argument for a second MOTU box connected to this one via ethernet cable for a full console spread. No matter which interface system, AVB Network card audio driver, Thunderbolt for PC or USB2or3. This really would open up the system for the practical usage of the awesome AVB channel capabilities. Right now, PC interfacing is a bottleneck.

Roundtrip latency numbers are kinda dicey because they're generally optimistic. That's especially true on Windows where the wide variety of hardware configurations seem to conspire to create driver conflicts. That disclaimer aside, using CEntrance's Latency Test Utility, I recorded an RTL of ~503 samples (~5.2ms) at 96khz, 128 sample buffers and ~384 samples at 44.1khz. You could probably do better with some fine tuning of your system.

I thought you had a 24A0? What do you think of the conversion quality of the 16a? I've been recording with my 16a for a few days now on TB and its been working great. So far so good.

So far so good. i'm pretty sure D has both, and fully modded from BLA, he told me he's putting it through the paces as we speak, i can't wait to hear his feedback! Wiz already showed us it's a serious contender, i'm really curious how it is compared to bone stock?

Not to derail the thread, but can I please derail the thread for a moment?... Wiz, can you discuss your Delta? Number of channels/configuration? Mods? Power supply? I have one that I would possibly like to put to use. Or maybe we should start a new thread for the discussion.

And they actually sound pretty good, just not in comparison, thats my opinion anyway 8)

Here is a tune I did today using the MOTU 16A.. I gots me a secondhand set of Mastersound Hats and I wanted to try them out... The 16A has worked so great since I got it (touch wood).. Also, I wasn't particularly enthralled with how soundcloud treated the upload, so I am putting this link here so you can download the mp3 I made if you wish... Wiz Link
and here is the Soundcloud version.. https%3A//soundcloud.com/user550433336/only-youCheers Wiz

So I have been enjoying the Motu stuff this week. Mostly using it TOSLINK with my 2 channel AD/DA for overdubs but it has mostly been great. I do have one strange thing happening and I am not sure if it is MOTU or PT 11 acting up.
A few times today and yesterday in the middle of tracking the latency would go crazy. Nothing changes at all. In fact, each time it happened I didn't do anything. So the latency would go from extremely low to really bad. Like PT is not syncing properly with the MOTU or else PT is just losing its mind (this is probably the case). But its hard to sus the problem with both new interfaces and the new version of PT. Even with this strange glitch the system is running a lot better then the older system. I use to have to restart the Playback engine all the time with my old interface and PT versions.
Let me know if anyone else has had this issue with either PT 11 HD (Software only) and or the new MOTU interfaces.

Hey Dan
I haven't seen anything like it.
But I do use logic pro.
I also monitor directly off the interface.
If latency is happening and it's because you're monitoring through ProTools could be a rogue plug-in?
Cheers

well, its not always happening. Very strange.
I need to figure out the monitoring off of the interface thing. I bet that would be nice for vocals and fx. I have been to busy just cutting tracks to experiment to much with it.
I had my buffer down and 32 almost all week and it rocked!

I modded mine already so they are not stock.
They do sound a good bit different then the RMA AD and DA. I need to take time and do some listening between them.
