@jcouta1 all good: we be just airing views !
not a fan of unlimited costs, sounds like we got onboard the avid bus round the same time and way.
I think they did a good job with 11 and ironically I used to think an annual fee for everything was a good idea so I am a bit perplexed at myself for why I feel so differently about it now?
I think it the way, the cost and the unclear increased value ?
Like if they said $100 a year pretty sure I'd be down !

You just gotta get yourself a job in a school, then you're looking at $100/year.

Ok. Now I'm fired up again. The subscription model isn't going to work. It could end up costing $100 a month at the minimum if all my plugs went subscription. I won't do it.
The good news is $199 a year is only 7.8 million streams on Spotify.

So the question is: What will Pro Tools 12 have brought to the table 11 months from now to make it worth an upgrade? I'm not likely to run out of good things I can do with my 8 year old computer and Pro Tools 11 for a long time. It isn't like the '90s when we got massive new functionality at the cost of a new computer and a Pro Tools upgrade.

I am going to charge $ 28.99 a month and promise a truely transparent service and deliver nothing but i will gaurantee no bugs and no need for support : whose down ? i really want my first Livid customer : Tony ? jk ?

The more I read about this and Avid's shady practices, the more I'm happy that I moved from Pro Tools to Logic some 15 years ago. Never looked back and the self-titled 'industry standard' can kiss my behind.

Well we gotta have something to cry in our beer about. It's inspirational. To the melody of I'll Break Out Tonight: Slowly the day session turns to night/And soon I'll turn out the Christmas lights/But soon Avid is making plans/To make me pay, and pay again These walls and bars can't hold a dreaming man/So I'll head out and buy Cu-base - again/Avid can chain my wallet but not my mind/And I'll break out from PT tonight

Ah come on ? Relative to other competative daws! i can buy logic for the same price and not have to pay the same amount annually, i have seen two copies of studio one pro used for $150 . I completely understand the subscription plan is a coffee a day and also 1,000 usd every 5 years. So the sunk and opportunitty costs concern me as i can do other things with $800 bucks: 2 seven circle pres , a neve and a jenson , one new warm eq , a max 67 kit : the list goes on and on or dribs and drabs from avid that will probably not really change how I record very much at all and thats just the first 5 years. I also don't aporeciate avid's machinations as I have already paid a fair bit up till now and I am on vanilla ! some of the horror stories of people with their hi end avid costs man do i emphathize ! Oh my cable cost me $50 a month and nobody watches tv but if i drop me tv I lose a discount and then they jack my phone plan ! Up here in canada we pay some of the highest cable and cell rates to subsidize the owners of those private sector businesses cus ah why ?? Just to be clear, I'm not an Avid fan. I bought a shitty sounding mbox and 002 over 10 years ago just so I could use the Pro Tools at home. At least we don't have to be locked to those pieces of crap anymore. Anyway, $200/year for the industry standard software isn't the end of the world, imo. Everyone is moving to the subscription model too. Cakewalk already did right? I'm sure it's only a matter of time. I'm going to at least try to remain calm until we get the full story. If Steinberg and Logic are smart they will not go the subscription route. Imo they will take over the DAW software business for the majority of DAW owners- who can't can't afford a full Pro Tools system, and Avid's non-HD software is below industry standards. I can only speak for Steinberg because I own Cubase and have owned Nintendo, but the ASIO utility is very well designed and implemented interface driver and competitive computer interfaces are everywhere. Nobody-particularly non commercial users- has to rely on Avid anymore, and that's a good thing.

They haven't said what the new features will be. If some are really great, people can be expected to upgrade soon after anything they want is released. If they aren't after a year, I agree they will lose.
Steinberg and Logic have been bigger players than Avid all along only not as prestigious.

A lot of my friends use logic as a second, I'm going to look into that a bit more. I may just pay the $199 at years end, slowly learn logic, and ride out the usefulness of PT unti I'm forced to switch. At which point Avid will have include a sleepover with Sofia Vergara as a "new feature" for me to pay another $899 to get back in 8)

I agree, Tony. Some of the instruments in Logic are inspiring - or at least easy to get to...I'm doing the same thing.
