I posted a video of the mic locker somewhere here on the site...think it was in the Blackbird Drum Files thread.

You should see Johns live rig...... API's for most everything, a few Neves, TG Limiter and a 33609 on the buss, SPL TD on almost everything... I mean it's like a killer studio rig and her shows sound amazing, Johns is awesome at running sound, and it's as smooth as silk of an operation from start to finish as I've ever seen. No automation, no recalling, and a Paragon console. It's a damn impressive live rig that's for sure. Oh and a DBX 160VU on Martina's vocal too, forgot about that.

John was a very successful business owner and entrepreneur BEFORE he married his "rock star" (his words) wife. Together they have built the largest most comprehensive studio complex on this earth. So what if he has 20 251's. Good for them and more power to them! I am a fan of what they do and hope they never stop. I'm quite certain he could give 2 shits about all the negative stuff people are saying about him. Exactly right. As a matter of fact, he had a hand in helping Martina get started. Along with another heavy weight. The man is self made. He certainly has my respect.

Soundcraft console, EAW speakers, some DBX rack gear...he's got nothing on me. Haha.

BTW - Dear New People To The Forum, Please excuse the Purplesite-ish tone to the previous 2 pages. We beg your forgiveness. However, the posts won't be censored so we can learn from our dumbassedness.
Thanks, Management

In all reality though, I wonder how much he really is driving up the prices. If a decent one comes up on eBay, is he putting in a bid of $30k and it keeps getting bid up until he wins or gets outbid? There can't be that big of a market for mics with that high of a tag, so if there were 20 more in the wild, would that bring the price down because his high bids weren't in on them or would it just be someone else with the bucks driving them up? Anyway, just thinking out loud.

eBay is not the only place to buy used gear. There are many sources. A lot of them are private studio auctions, and dealers who receive large shipments from liquidators. If you have the money in place, get in touch with some of these folks and you'll be contacted when things become available... and for much less than full market value.

OMG! They have 4 original 1176's. 4!!! Lets take him out back and beat the shit out him!!!!! 4 in that studio. They have a full complex with 8 studios. I can envy him but I sure can't hate him for it. I hope he encourages people to get out of cutting the same songs in the same keys at the same tempo because radio and focus groups said so. That would be a bigger feat than building Blackbird studios. R

Now, if all that gets you in the mood and enables you to make the best recording of your life, then it's all worth it.
Anyone who has such a collection must absolutely love what they're collecting, so anything done with so much love in the mix is fine by me.

John still has a lot of influence in that town and I know he cares about the music. Maybe he and Sal could team up and lean on the labels a little bit... Attachment Deleted

It an amazing facility. It is fun to see John ask someone what their fantasy guitar would be on the track they are beginning to record and see him return with it and put it in their hands moments later. That can't be bought.

That place is an historical archive and working museum of the most coveted pro audio gear ever made, do they have Fairchilds in there?
