You guys got me curious... went to the site and now I am more confused then ever. It is so convoluted! Seems to be just enough info but than you think I will look at the pic and figure it out, and its a crapy thumb. Arg!

While a valid request since I assume you own one....keep in mind you're comparing a line level input to a preamp circuit input. I can almost assure you it will sound better because of that--which is to say nothing of the converters in either unit. You will have to be careful with the gain staging on such a comparison, as the 816 will have an extra gain stage that will make the same signal...some other level-be that louder or quieter. As a Cubase user, I'd have bought 2 or 3 816s sight unheard due to the integration of cue and reverb--and because I've never heard a line level AD that didn't sound good at 88/96. But they went with "universal jack" circuits for the inputs.

Haven't tried it yet. Im away for for work this coming week, and have a bit up my sleeve this wkend. Also a friend of mine is gonna wire it for 240v next week. Will use it Next weekend and report back. must say, I do like my mr816, but since I upgraded my monitoring recently a can hear the D/A lacks a bit. Monitoring through a dangerous music source and Neumann KH120's. tony I would the clock was in the unit

I'm sure I could make his stuff look a lot better and probably function better. For an outsiders view the worst thing about his gear is the way they look! Same thing with BLA.

I have to say, I'm very interested in these converters and don't care about the looks. I understand my view is not widespread.

^ I'm picking up what your putting down, but i always find a cool factor in something that looks like it was made to just function well, all aesthetics aside.. I appreciate both though, i love my dual 1176 cases from Dan, they look kill

Well, just saw the pics - this is most certainly a clock module. I heard they can be locked to a wordclock in but put out MCLK, which is the internal clock format according to the ADs spec sheet to sync some of the same ADs together... 1x, 2x, 4x surely are the clock multipliers (single speed aka 44.1/48, double speed aka 88.2/96 and quad speed clock). Lock should light up when synced thru wordclock...
BR, Martin

Now if I wanna use the clock on the Ross martin do i need to use this little box?

Sorted. That extra clock is just for clocking more than one RM units. Going away tomorrow, but had a quick listen to the RM ADC. Sound great. Big step up from the MR816's A/D. Didnt get to do any tracking. Just listened on a mix im working on.
This thing does sound amazing.
Thanks for the recommendations

If you designed a "retro" looking case for him, he could charge three times the price and sell three times as many...Just a missed opportunity for him at a marketing level.

Imagine how many he would sell if they liked good and had a reasonable website!

Looks is mot the best. BUT, cant believe these are so cheap for how they sound. Picked mine up for $275. Conversion on this thing is amazing. Only had it for a day, and played a little more with it last night. Do I dare to say the mix I worked on sounds more "analog"

come on fella's, i hope they stay looking exactly as is, why the hay would you wish for a 3x price?? for looks, wgas? i'm going to pick up an 8 channel DA as soon as they come available, i also pulled my BLA 002 auction, i just can't bring myself to sell it, this ross martin will slave off the FM clock, be very complimentary and give me a total of 18 outputs in the short term, which will hold me over more than nicely until someone comes up with a 32 i/o beast for a reasonable price, i think in a year or so, the day of the $7k-$10K convertors are over?

I think if he put any effort into looks he would sell a lot more and it would cost him almost nothing. My guess is he doesn't have any experience with marketing or designing for cosmetic appeal. Heck if he called me I would be glad to work something out for him. I know for most people first impressions mean a lot. His marketing and branding doesn't reflect the gear form the things I have been told. To me that is a bummer.
Tony that is probably a good idea! The BLA 002 is so hard to beat. I am to the point however that I need something 32 channels. I am hoping for a killer new product or someone to mod the Orion so it doesn't sound so 2D and mid rangy. I am half tempted to take a look at one myself and see what can be done. I would also love to hear one clocked to a BLA micro clock and see if that helps at all. Clearly, by their own marketing of the Orion it can benefit from an upgraded clock.

Do I dare to say the mix I worked on sounds more "analog" Don't you dare! Just say "better". No myth and legend building - pleeeeease. Eventually at some point Harman International or Uli B. might buy them and we all know that RM will forever be lost to the Dark Side of the Force....

Need help fellas. Just came home and jump right back into mixing a new song i started last weekend.
And all of a sudden i had this loud noise burst. That would go away.
It coming from the Ross martin ADC. My VP28's was running on the 2 buss through the Ross martin. Switched it of and it wont go away. Also tested a mic through both channels. Its this constant distorted noise burst. Very loud, almost blew my speakers.
It was working fine when i tested it on monday
Anyone suggestions

Friend of mine reckon its a clocking issue.
This is how I initially set it up. Spdif out of the RM into Spdif in on my MR816. In Cubase i selected clock source. Spdif and it sinked on the from panel of the Mr816. Tested in for about 30 min on monday, and now ran it for 10min before the noise bursts came.
My friend said I need to run a BNC out of the RM word clock out, to the WC in on the MR816. Now when I select word clock in as the clock it doesnt sink.
And I still get the noise.
Dont know if its clocking or the actual unit.
As I said it worked perfect for about 40 minutes with just the spdif out. Do I need to run a BNC cable as well?

Just looked into the clocking, pretty sure I can clock the MR816 to the RM through spdif. I dont think clocking is the issue.
Either something from with the PCM4222 or maybe a shitty spdif cable(was a cheap one) . Cable is 75ohm
And not close to a shop to get another cable now. Aaaarg. This is killing me

Constant noise burst...i would have thought about clocking as well...first... What i do not understand is, that it did work first, but well... SPDIF is generally not bad as a clock source, much better than ADAT e.g.. You may have problems anyway if you do not get the clocking over SPDIF, you may also not get the digital audio. OK, wordclock is the stable standard clocking solition. ("real men do wordclock") For the analog SPDIF you can use nearly any cinch cable you have at hand - it should not end in burst or severe clock problems. If it worked before, it is most probably OK. But try any other cinch cable to be sure.
Does the MR816 have a possibility to show if it is locked to the RM? Hardware, LED? The first and most interesting question.
Now, assuming you have the unit really new and just ran it about an hour, and you have been away... Did someone else have access to the unit? Just asking. Sometimes things happen to gear in absence...just a thought to be sure nothing is overlooked.
Another idea. Did you open the unit already? What comes to my mind - problems at the jacks and switches inside, solder joint that got flaky (maybe a cold one, overlooked and cracked after the unit got warm for the first time, something simple maybe...) Things, that can become a problem after transport and some time of operation due to tension...
Just a few ideas, hope it helps a bit...
Best regards, Martin

Best regards, Martin Thanks Martin Think it might be the spdif cable thats crappy. Or I hope if I connect a BNC cable word clock out of the RM to WC in of the mr816, it doesn't sync. On the front there is led's. Keeps on flashing. But through the spdif it sync's. will try another spdif cable tomorrow. damn this thing sounds so gooood. And I need to finish a song. it worked today for about 10 minutes.
